I must note here that I would not have a problem at all with these guys if it wasn't for their highly obnoxious pompousness. It's one thing to say, "Hey, I got the world record for Donkey Kong! I'm awesome!", and another thing entirely to act like you're better than everyone else -- including the players who worked 100x harder than they did mastering much harder, more complicated games in ways that no one else who walked the earth's soil has ever came close to managing.
@wmotamedi Quit bitching. Billions and billions of people who don't know any better line up in front of Walmart to buy Gears of War or some other dreary FPS, game centers are rapidly shutting their doors in Japan... there's only a handful of real gamers left, the last thing we need is in-fighting about who's more hardcore.
There's no getting around it: Mark, Billy, and the rest of the "gang" are talentless little faggots who live in the narrow little bubble they constructed around themselves to dupe the gullible masses into thinking that THEY are the best arcade players in the world. NOT SPS, HFD, ACR, etc. As far as they are concerned, those players don't even exist. Because if they were to acknowledge their existence, they'd be forced to face up to how inferior and petty their "talents" really are. Fuck 'em all.
Hopefully he's there at California Extreme 2010, so I can walk up to him with a vertically-oriented TV, a Japanese stick, and greet him in Japanese. :P
I'd cut him some slack if it weren't for his claim of having played DDP1 100-150 times. Judging by his playstyle and comments it looks like he hasn't played any bullet hell shooters, DDP or not, even once.
just bringing up a few points from a shmupper's perspective:
I would say the screen complaint is indeed valid, someone used to play on much smaller screens (old cabs) will have a hard time seeing the whole screen at once, PROM for example did his DDP scores on an untated 17" screen and says that this actually helped him. (it allows more of the screen to be seen at once)
-The Japanese script comment is ignorant and even disrespectful. It doesn't sound as he intended to be disrespectful though.
He didn't intend not to be disrespectful. I think he was serious. Why are some parts in Japanese and some in English? Well, probably because it was a Japanese game and not (IIRC) intended for US release at all.
Separating shmups from "classics", barely grasping the concept of powerups and small hitbox here while having reportedly played DDP over a hundred times, lashing at Japanese for writing in Japanese in a Japanese-only game and for putting the stick on the left as if right-handedness had something to do with it, arguing that the screen is too large
I'm not sure if I like his attitude towards the game or not. He doesn't even make an impression of being an arcade WR holder.
Whatever you are talking about is hardly a response to my criticism of Alpiger.
In fact, you aren't making much sense either way. And neither does Alpiger when he says that the screen is too large or that left-handed stick is stupid because he is right-handed. That's among other things, of course. Or are you still insisting all this pertains to a niche (...within a niche within a niche...) the guy had no connection whatsoever? Over 20% of "classic" arcade games released in 80s were shmups.
You're trolling so I trolled back. I would prefer to be reasonable but there isn't room in 512 characters to make a positive connection of understanding with somebody who thinks "[X] doesn't make sense" is, by itself, a good criticism of X, one that a mature mind would form.
To repeat: Alpiger played a game, casually ran his mouth while doing it, and got filmed. He's a big deal in his way; the game is a big deal in its own way; this silly video isn't grounds for serious judgment of either.
I wasn't trolling, unless by that you mean leaving any non-positive comment on any YouTube video.
I don't see why you are taking my criticism so seriously. If you reread my initial comment you'll see I wasn't "passing serious judgement" (?) on Alpiger, but stated my impression on what I was supposed to see & hear. If you think his ramblings do make sense, that's fine by me, and you don't have to inform me of that fact every time you disagree, especially be saying "even though they are holy".
You repeat bits of things you disagree with, without explaining why they're wrong, and you call this criticism. When somebody argues with you, you say they're taking things too seriously. These are things trolls do. You did them. You are a troll, whether you know it or not.
(You did make a couple of points: that Alpiger didn't understand the concept of a hit box, and that shmups are as "classic" as the games he's good at. I don't have space to address these. 512-limit promotes trolling.)
If you wish me to elaborate, I can do that. Obviously I wasn't originally going to post several comments explaining each of my points in detail while pertaining to the 500 character limit.
On most games (like this and Psyvariar 2), yeah, playing on a horizontal screen is a nightmare. Though I played Mushihime-sama Futari on a horizontal CRT last week (I normally play on an upright 5:4 1280x1024 LCD screen that due to its design is near-impossible to rotate) and it didn't bug me all that much; I was able to reach Larsa on BL Original.
@moozooh I know this comment was made 2 years ago, but I think it's even more telling that he almost never lets go of the laser. Surely, if you've played the original DoDonPachi a hundred times, you would know when to switch between shot and laser, if not for scoring then at the very least for better movement and for destroying enemies more effectively.
@moozooh Wow pretty weird I actually got you confused with prometheus who by the time I surfed through that forum he had a legendary 505Million run, the fun thing was that the he was fighting with some guys over 1st spot for 100million, 101 million 102 million then he submitted the first 2-ALL and showed four hundred and something and everyone else just gave up. Good times.
@cactu What's offensive is his cluelessness about things he is expected to know and disrespectful, authoritative tone when talking about things he knows next to nothing about. "The screen is too big", "the stick is on the left and I'm right-handed", "the small text that bears no significance whatsoever is in Japanese in a game released for the Japanese", those excuses are childish (they're all basically "it's not my fault") and hilarious for a player of his status and supposed experience.
it's fun to see Alpiger play DOJ , he didn't do to bad !
