@Falcon843 My favorite Fish scene was when he complained that the department's computer system said he was dead. Barney says "It's probably a mistake."
I always remember Abe Vigoda as Fish from Barney Miller (didn't he also have a spinoff series from BM called 'Fish'?) and as Tessio from The Godfather.
Actor Max Gail, the guy wearing the karate outfit, father use to golf on the golf course that I caddied on back in Michigan. We use to caddy for him during the 80's. He would tell us about his son on the show back then.
A little trivia on Barney Miller. It was the last show to win the coveted Thursday night ratings for ABC until Grey's Anatomy nearly thirty years later.
I love all the versions of the "Barney Miller" theme, but somehow this first one is the funkiest, I think. The other versions are a bit smoother, and done with a bit more care, and that's fine, but the first one, with less fuss about it, still reigns.
I rcognized Hal Linden when I lived in LA a number of years ago. What drew my attention to him was the license plate on the car he was driving. It said "FAGEL" which is my last name. I went up to Hal and introduced myself asking the source of the license plate. He was very nice and told me it was a family name to which I said "it is to me too!"
Hal is an actor and as long has he can he will enjoy his work...
I knew Danny Arnold, the exec producer when I lived in LA. My company installed a security system in his car that even protected the wheel discs. Hal Linden and I are distantly related. I saw him at a deli in LA and saw his license plate, it spelled out my last name, I spoke to Hal breifly, he's very down to earth and nice gentleman.
I miss Barney Miller. All of the characters were on point. My least favorite character was Dietrich. Fish was hilarious, and Det. Yamana was funnier. Did anyone see that episode "Werewolf" where he thought the guy in the cell was changing into the werewolf and he shouted, "BARNEY!!!!!" That was classic! R.I.P Jack Soo.
Dietrich was great but overrated(kind of like Kramer on Seinfeld). I liked Yamana the best but that may be because I'm Asian. Hell, the whole cast was great.
Global television and Prime in Canada used to add the "On Global" or "On Prime" monicker to their shows to make damn sure you knew it was on their networks. Luckily theyve stopped this stupid, selfish behaviour.
@Cheetos143 Holy Shit...by far the best coment I've ever read on Youtube. Simple and to the point. Imagine that bass pluckin' and slappin' as you go down the block!! Mah man!!
Great post. I was telling my band (young cats) how bad ass that theme is and they were like "What's Barney Miller?" Now I can send it to them. I still feel old tho...

Hey where's the Twin Towers (WTC) in the NYC skyline? Maybe that's why they changed the opening skyline in 1976.

kinda ironic that from these opening credits from the first season, only Hal Linden and Max Gail would be around for the entire run of the series.

The part where Wojo did the karate chop, reminds me of the music video "(Oh) Pretty Woman" by Van Halen.

The bass and the drums are killer on this theme. That song really speaks to what NYC was back in the 1970s-early 1980s.
