i don't get it. I agree with your review that The Sun is a great novel and ahead of its time. It just puzzles me why it's not even on the top ten Greatest novels of the 20th century while the Great Gatsby is on the 2nd. Gatsby is beautifully and meticulously crafted, no doubt, but the settings are much more explored than the characters and the plot is like a rundown soap opera story. The sun is definitely more influential and post modern, but why this treatment? Why?
The book was wonderful. At first I did not know what the true meaning was behind the book, but then i realized that it had to do with the materialistic people of America (in the book) and trying to retrieve the past.
What's funny is that most of the Republican party is made up of people like Tom. "We've got to beat them down!" Most Republicans would agree with Daisy, even though she wasn't being serious.
This doesn't do the beautiful descriptions in the book any justice. Anyone who has never read the book but is watching this is a damn fool. Read the book. You won't regret it.
The book has pure magic that cannot be captured on film.
"His heart beat faster and faster as Daisy's white face came up to his own. He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God. So he waited, listening for a moment longer to the tuning-fork that had been struck upon a star. Then he kissed her. At his lips' touch she blossomed for him like a flower and the incarnation was complete."
I don't like the actor who plays Tom, he is less aggressive and stronger in the book. This Tom is just a fail. I am glad they are doing a remake this year.
all these comments are ridiculous-this movie has an awesome and perfect (as can be) cast, Redford is a bit wooden but the 1949 version has Alan Ladd who is perfectly cool, composed and convincing, even his height gels with one who is trying to create an effective identity, the only bad acting will be seen in the 2012 version but I bet all these people will be raving about how awesome the movie is just because your generation is behind it...can u be anymore shallow? take a look at u ,not daisy
How are we shallow? The only reason we don't like the that much movie is because we DID like the book, so it's not like we're a bunch of tasteless idiots. I do agree that remakes are usually worse, though. (Footloose without Kevin Bacon? Why bother.)
@redfairy7 the shallow comment was geared towards those saying Daisy is shallow just because it's easy to peg her but she actually sees and comments on many things that other characters ignore, so I was saying people just say she's shallow based on one or two actions, and ignore all else. And what Fitzgerald is saying is that the "American Dream" doesn't leave you a lot of room. Daisy was in a cage but people don't want the more depressing reality so they just cop out by saying she's a bimbo..
Oh, I see. I thought you meant that everyone was complaining about how the actors look and all the sweat. (seriously, they are pretty sweaty.) but I agree with you about Daisy. Toward the end of the book she kind of annoyed me, but I couldn't hate her. She was conflicted, and she really didn't have a lot of great options.
EdCorinthos, "The Guy" is none other than Robert Redford. Leonardo De Caprio has not yet demonstrated maturity required for a great character such as Gatsby.
hated the book (boring) and hated the movie, too. Saw it when it first came out. Only one half way decent in acting or interesting was Sam Waterston. Bruce Dern completely mis-cast. Mia Farrow a twerp. All so interesting its putting me to sleep.......zzzz.....zzzzz
American dream for a man: graft your way to the top through sheer balls and brains.
American dream for a woman: leech your way to the top where if you're lucky you'll be caught between leeching off one rich successful man and another.
@orozco545 You should really read the book. You can enjoy the movie better! This movie failed due to a casting mixup. Bruce Dern should have played Gatsby, and Redford the cad husband. Had they reversed the actors in these two rôles, this would have really worked. If you are having trouble reading a book, perhaps you have too must distraction or may have a developmental disability. Some books DO take a few attempts to read. I teach in France. Some books were very hard for me!

Heavens to Monroe Stahr! THANKS for posting this! For some reason, I've never seen this shown on TV. There was a big media spash when this was first released, back when I was a teen in the mid-70's. In fact, Mia as Daisy was on the cover of the FIRST issue of "People" magazine. I've read that Ali McGraw had the inside track to play Daisy (after all, her husband - Robert Evans - was the head of Paramount at the time) but that idea went out the window when Ali left Evans for Steve McQueen.
when i read the book i didnt picture tom looking like the actor who plays him in this movie. it actually reminds me a bit of the owen wilson movie wedding crashers in that owen wilsons in love with a women whos out of his reach with a total asshole. the book totally blew my mind, picked it up because of its reputation and to my surprise blew through it. great characters, story, twists and amarvelous ending. i would've loved it if kubrick this movie, loved his adaptation of a clockwork orange
Gatsby's a creep tom's a douche myrtle's a slut Jordan is a liar Daisy is a eccentric bitch wilson's retarded everyone else is drunk and nick is the only fucking normal person in the whole story AND THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE GREAT LITERATURE? why did i have to waste my time reading this piece of shit someone please explain the deeper meaning of the story (if there is more to it than the superficial american "dream") i got a hundred on a test on the book, but still don't really get it...
@IfureadthisURdum You just named them. All these type of qualities are in the people we meet throughout our life. Its more than just a story, its a journey through the human psyche and what makes people tick and want.
However much I like DiCaprio, I can't imagine him as Jay Gatsby. Robert Redford gave more than just a great performance here: he epitomized Gatsby. In my head, Redford will always be the face of Gatsby no matter what.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! It captured perfectly the struggle idealist go through to actualize their dreams rather than accepting what they have. Gatsby could have had the world if it wasnt for his naive crush.A sort of tragic hero with a fatal flaw to undo him. And to those complaining about having to read it, tough shit. Go back to smoking weed, watching Family Guy and playing xbox, but dont vote or complain because you dont want to think. Im 17 btw.
