  • The zoom at 2:42 aggravates me.

  • Daisy is so awkward...haha...or maybe it was just that time period...

  • fukkkin gatsby laddddddddddddddsssssssssssssss

  • thank youu so much for this now i can write my essay

  • i don't get it. I agree with your review that The Sun is a great novel and ahead of its time. It just puzzles me why it's not even on the top ten Greatest novels of the 20th century while the Great Gatsby is on the 2nd. Gatsby is beautifully and meticulously crafted, no doubt, but the settings are much more explored than the characters and the plot is like a rundown soap opera story. The sun is definitely more influential and post modern, but why this treatment? Why?

  • The book was wonderful. At first I did not know what the true meaning was behind the book, but then i realized that it had to do with the materialistic people of America (in the book) and trying to retrieve the past.

  • @culturedexperimenter *cough* bullshit *cough* There is ONLY one meaning/teaching behind this book and it's " Rich Girls don't marry Poor Boys."

  • any1 know the name of the music that starts playing at 7:55

  • 9:51 the guy just standing there "da fuck am i doing here?"

  • I'm surprised at how the movie takes every word from the book. Plus that other girl, not Daisy, is kinda hot; though she may be a bit older now.

  • @greensky01 jordan baker (that's her name in the book) and i thought so too XD

  • lmao mccoy

  • MCCOY!!!!

  • not the actors' fault, i think it was the director's vision was skewed

  • Steve Carrell has aged well.

  • This movie is terrible!

  • terrible choice of actress

  • Who plays tom?

  • Sam Waterson is too nice to play our cynical friend Mr. Carraway.

  • Am i the only one that thinks the actress that plays daisy is fabulous?!

  • Anyone in favor of castrating Tom and shoot daisy in the head? "I."

  • 4:42 awkward moment for black ppl

  • there so rich its pathetic

  • Nick is so nice X3

  • i wish i would've payed attention in class... :/

  • Dear GOD she plays a terrible Daisy

  • of all abominations, i'm watching this movie without reading the book first, so let's see how i like it

  • What kind of accents does Daisy have? It sounds almost English.

  • Can anyone else hear all the flies around in this video? What do they live by a stock yard?

  • the book sucks the movies way better

  • Jordan is so pretty and I love her voice. Sooo Saucy!!!

  • Daisy's character sucks im sorry but she's not any good

  • @PenultimateRun LOL!

What's funny is that most of the Republican party is made up of people like Tom. "We've got to beat them down!" Most Republicans would agree with Daisy, even though she wasn't being serious.

  • This doesn't do the beautiful descriptions in the book any justice. Anyone who has never read the book but is watching this is a damn fool. Read the book. You won't regret it.

  • The book has pure magic that cannot be captured on film.

"His heart beat faster and faster as Daisy's white face came up to his own. He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God. So he waited, listening for a moment longer to the tuning-fork that had been struck upon a star. Then he kissed her. At his lips' touch she blossomed for him like a flower and the incarnation was complete."

  • @SagaciousSilence Beautiful writing.

  • Why is everything so white...?? O_O There house is like a damn hospital

  • @rainstar999 symbolism, figure it out.

  • WTF?????? DAISY NEVER REFERED TO MISS BAKER AS JORDAN SO EARLY!!! WTF WTF WTF FUCK THIS SHIT

  • I wish the scene with the white curtains wasn't filmed so rushed, there was such a nice description in the book and you can barely see it here! ;A;

  • I don't like the actor who plays Tom, he is less aggressive and stronger in the book. This Tom is just a fail. I am glad they are doing a remake this year.

  • hehe now i wont have to read the book

  • I got a fucken D on my test I had no idea there was a movie.

  • My teacher said we couldn't read ahead....she didn't say anything about watching ahead....=D

  • They all look older than I expected , apart from Jordan maybe, and Tom looks really weak compared to the book version.

  • i wonder how Carey mulligan is going to pull the character of Daisy.

  • Tom: "DEM COLOR'D FOLKS ARE GONNA DESTROY US!"

Daisy: "LOOK AT THE SWEAT DRIPPING FROM MY ARMPITS! ISN'T THIS ROMANTIC? I'M SWEATING LIKE A LITTLE CHINESE KID IN A SWEATSHOP!"

Jordan: "WHY OF COURSE I'M ON BIRTH CONTROL!"

Gatsby: "WHAT'S A SOCIOPATH? MEEE? WHY... WHY OF COURSE NOT, OLD SPORT."

    Nick: "I hate you all."

  • @SagaciousSilence hahaha :)

  • @SagaciousSilence

Everyone except Nick was a sociopath in this book/movie lol

  • One of my favorite books in the world !! :D

  • Daisy isn't being serious when she says "we've got to beat them down". You can tell from Tom's reaction.

  • He patted Nicks ass didnt he? At 1:27....

  • shoutout to chaminade

  • all these comments are ridiculous-this movie has an awesome and perfect (as can be) cast, Redford is a bit wooden but the 1949 version has Alan Ladd who is perfectly cool, composed and convincing, even his height gels with one who is trying to create an effective identity, the only bad acting will be seen in the 2012 version but I bet all these people will be raving about how awesome the movie is just because your generation is behind it...can u be anymore shallow? take a look at u ,not daisy

  • @vindinArges

How are we shallow? The only reason we don't like the that much movie is because we DID like the book, so it's not like we're a bunch of tasteless idiots. I do agree that remakes are usually worse, though. (Footloose without Kevin Bacon? Why bother.)

  • @redfairy7 the shallow comment was geared towards those saying Daisy is shallow just because it's easy to peg her but she actually sees and comments on many things that other characters ignore, so I was saying people just say she's shallow based on one or two actions, and ignore all else. And what Fitzgerald is saying is that the "American Dream" doesn't leave you a lot of room. Daisy was in a cage but people don't want the more depressing reality so they just cop out by saying she's a bimbo..

  • @vindinArges

Oh, I see. I thought you meant that everyone was complaining about how the actors look and all the sweat. (seriously, they are pretty sweaty.) but I agree with you about Daisy. Toward the end of the book she kind of annoyed me, but I couldn't hate her. She was conflicted, and she really didn't have a lot of great options.

  • omg tom. hahahah i'm dying.

  • how many people watching this didnt read the book for summer reading. and have the test thursday? lol

  • Tom Buchanan is not nearly big enough.

  • just finish the book for school now lets see how movie is

  • EdCorinthos, "The Guy" is none other than Robert Redford. Leonardo De Caprio has not yet demonstrated maturity required for a great character such as Gatsby.

  • @ligmelho english

  • how similar is this to the book?

  • @RoselliMarco pretty similar (:

  • Their acting sucks...

  • @Youssymeerkat its 1974, everything sucked

  • @JadedRaverJewel actually it was 1922

  • Daisy is a beautiful fool . . .

  • hated the book (boring) and hated the movie, too. Saw it when it first came out. Only one half way decent in acting or interesting was Sam Waterston. Bruce Dern completely mis-cast. Mia Farrow a twerp. All so interesting its putting me to sleep.......zzzz.....zzzzz

  • I know someone just like Daisy, ignorant as the day is long but gets whatever the hell she wants due to beauty...sad

  • the excessive sweating in this movie is a turn off...

  • Exactly how I imagined Daisy and Jordan. However, Tom looks rather weak...

  • jordan baker's a hoe

  • "i've been drunk for about a week now, and i thought it might sober me up to sit in a library"

  • Who's idea was it to cast Mia Farrow as Daisy? she's horrendous

  • this is not how i imagined tom!!! he was suppose to have muscles and i didnt imagine the mustas

  • I only see the film cuz I don't have the time... books are usually better, deeper, more full of details (& thoughts)

  • I hope Baz Lurhmanns adaptation will be better than this....ugh, I love Mia, but she is not Daisy.

  • am i the only one whos watching the movie instead of reading the book in order to study for a test in English class?

  • @orozco545 if you prefer the film to the book then chances are I don't care for you as a person.

  • @whiplashchild i prefer a film over a book all day everyday

  • @orozco545 you shouldn't in this case.

  • @orozco545 That's unfortunate. The book is wonderful.

  • @orozco545 You should really read the book. You can enjoy the movie better! This movie failed due to a casting mixup. Bruce Dern should have played Gatsby, and Redford the cad husband. Had they reversed the actors in these two rôles, this would have really worked. If you are having trouble reading a book, perhaps you have too must distraction or may have a developmental disability. Some books DO take a few attempts to read. I teach in France. Some books were very hard for me!

  • @orozco545 nope, cause that is wat im doin now

  • @orozco545 hahahahahahhaahahahaahhahaha thats exactly what im doinnggggggggggggg

  • @orozco545

I didn't even know there was a movie! Hehe I had to do my entire IGCSE literature course (read: mandatory self-torture) the old school way by reading the book like, fifty times.

Surprisingly, it was actually good :D

  • @orozco545 You're missing out. It's the only book I read ahead of assigned reading in school. I read it in 3 days and that was with savoring it. No speed reading.

  • @orozco545

    Me too, This is unbelievable!!

    How small is this world?

  • @orozco545 hahahahaha no your not

  • Jordan is sooo hot

  • I saw the green light!

  • myrtle is retarded -.- ugly biatch too

  • Heavens to Monroe Stahr! THANKS for posting this! For some reason, I've never seen this shown on TV. There was a big media spash when this was first released, back when I was a teen in the mid-70's. In fact, Mia as Daisy was on the cover of the FIRST issue of "People" magazine. I've read that Ali McGraw had the inside track to play Daisy (after all, her husband - Robert Evans - was the head of Paramount at the time) but that idea went out the window when Ali left Evans for Steve McQueen.

  • The Charleston!!! :D

  • One of the best books I have ever read. Fitzgerald was a genius, brilliant writing.

  • wow the acting is so choppy and fake .i thought this would be more interesting than actually reading it...but nah

  • @kassiopeia2009

I haven't seen a film adaptation yet that was as good as the original novel or story.

  • when i read the book i didnt picture tom looking like the actor who plays him in this movie. it actually reminds me a bit of the owen wilson movie wedding crashers in that owen wilsons in love with a women whos out of his reach with a total asshole. the book totally blew my mind, picked it up because of its reputation and to my surprise blew through it. great characters, story, twists and amarvelous ending. i would've loved it if kubrick this movie, loved his adaptation of a clockwork orange

  • I wanna slap Daisy

  • @gagikRLHS

I wanna put her over my knee and spank her.

  • Nick is always so sweaty lol

  • @saltwaterr lol ik my dad said that

  • Tom looks like a porn star

  • I love the book. It's one of the greatest books I've ever read in my life. The movie... meh.

  • Gatsby's a creep tom's a douche myrtle's a slut Jordan is a liar Daisy is a eccentric bitch wilson's retarded everyone else is drunk and nick is the only fucking normal person in the whole story AND THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE GREAT LITERATURE? why did i have to waste my time reading this piece of shit someone please explain the deeper meaning of the story (if there is more to it than the superficial american "dream") i got a hundred on a test on the book, but still don't really get it...
  • @IfureadthisURdum You just named them. All these type of qualities are in the people we meet throughout our life. Its more than just a story, its a journey through the human psyche and what makes people tick and want.

  • I liked this story. Though, all of the female main characters in it were sluts.

  • However much I like DiCaprio, I can't imagine him as Jay Gatsby. Robert Redford gave more than just a great performance here: he epitomized Gatsby. In my head, Redford will always be the face of Gatsby no matter what.

  • Tom doesn't look hulking

  • I LOVED THIS BOOK! It captured perfectly the struggle idealist go through to actualize their dreams rather than accepting what they have. Gatsby could have had the world if it wasnt for his naive crush.A sort of tragic hero with a fatal flaw to undo him. And to those complaining about having to read it, tough shit. Go back to smoking weed, watching Family Guy and playing xbox, but dont vote or complain because you dont want to think. Im 17 btw.

  • 7:25 is hilarious, vintage scooby doo moment if i've ever seen one

  • At 5:41 he's like WTF?

  • diasy's supposed to have dark hair, it says in the book

  • i thought the book said diasy was really beautiful....but here she looks a whore or some cheap slut but thats my opinion

  • daisy succkckckckckckssss

  • Yeah, Guy who played Tom couldve been alot better

  • i have to read this lame book for english so ima just watch the movie xD

  • @xbulldog12x Me too! :O

  • @SuperAngieful my teacher is a fag that makes us read books about gay couples and shit xD

  • @xbulldog12x your'e and ignorant piece of shit

  • @rogums he is gay and he does make us read books about gay couples... if stating a fact must make me ignorant then i wonder what you are...

  • @xbulldog12x ah well, maybe you have a point then. I don't think fag is the right terminology to be using though.

  • @rogums my bad... i said it out of spite

  • Daisy is an ignorant bitch

  • @crazymankevyn19 they're all fucking parasites.

  • @crazymankevyn19 well no. She is seemingly oblivious to the fact that Tom has a mistress so tries to be cheerful and pretend she doesn't know he's cheating. She supports his racist comment to possibly help stop Tom from being a dick to her.

  • oh sam wattersron.

  • The book was good the film was terrible

  • This was the only great work of a classic american failure. After this he moved on to writing bad movie scripts and of course he hit the bottle some too. Gore Vidal's essay on Fitzgerald is more witty than this one's whole career.

  • dont think my opinion on these matters is final, just because i am stronger than you and more of a man than you are

  • great book. just finished it yesterday. Looking forward to all the movies.

  • @uwoodyjk its boring to me and my class.no one gets it just about parties from waht we read.

  • @Gabbyxxzz yeah you probably have to be over 30 to really appreciate the message behind this film. So I totally understand anyone under 30 that doesn't really get it. Make yourself a note and read it when you get old.

  • @JBilove4eva: Yes, that's him--37 years later. The actor's name is Sam Waterson.

  • Nick looks like an older version of Joe Mazzello!

  • Who played Tom was a fail.......

  • @KBerryful Guess he had a good agent...who had something over the producer.

  • @KBerryful

    why?

  • @KBerryful i think billy zane, Cal from Titanic would've been a good Tom. his character's personality just seems like Tom's.

  • Johnny Depp would be a perfect Gatsby!!!

But Leo Dicaprio is also a sensible choice; with his experience he'll play the part well

  • @assalamailaikum18 i was thinking james franco would be suited for it too

  • btw in this movie ; HULKING does not describe tom in any way at all!

  • gay! wtf im reading this book and nick's voice sounds like Holden from the catcher in the rye; very depressing.

  • this is awful compared to the book haha

  • Did you know they turned it into a video game for the NES?

  • omg we had to watch this in class and i think i died

  • Daisy and Jordan are way more elegant and attractive than i imagined them to be ... good shit !

  • I dislike the choice of Dicaprio as Gatsby :/

  • Comment removed

  • @raphsk8er i read it this year and im sure you just dont get the concept of the book...on one website it was #1 of a 100 greatest book list...so please read it again its a GREAT book...im 16 by the way.

  • is it like the book???

  • Boring book ... X

  • i had to read this! it should be The Gay Gatsby! THIS book is a grade killer!

  • @Mr245418 It's one of the easiest books to read in high school. And it's extremely short. Are you fucking retarded?

  • @jjdreiling3 but teachers grade you on how well you could see all of the symbolism that... sometimes isnt even there i think. i liked it thoo

  • @jjdreiling3

    It is fucking boring though

  • i had to read this! it should be The Gay Gatsby

  • what type of dogs are those

    i think they're very ugly

  • what a brilliant novel!... still remember all the essays in high school on the many symbolism of this book

  • WHAT! Nick doesn't know about jordan being a golf player until the party!

  • tom doesn't seem much of a brute. he seems more of that tall kid in high school that talks through his nose and always stands around awkwardly...

  • when is the new great gatsby movie releasing?

  • is this really the 1974 version?

  • does anyone else think of tom as a combination of gaston from beauty and the beast and clayton from tarzan?

  • all this racism reminds me of my grandparents

  • WTF is up with the boat at the beginning?

  • That day room is so luscious!

  • He's better in Law and Order

  • loved the book and the movie :D
