When they traveled long distance for work, or did dangerous work they would wear gold or silver earrings to pay for costs if they died. Similar to the reason pirates wore earrings. Its still a custom among many carpenters. You work with people in trade unions? I do, most of the carpenters i know who have completed their journeymanship have earrings.

The Holiday Special could have been better if they had not cast people such as Bea Arthur and the Jefferson Starship in supporting roles and stuck to the original cast, as well as eliminating Leia singing the Life Day song at the end. Having Chewbacca's family was not so bad, as they could have been seen as Han Solo's substitute family (Chewie being the one Solo trusted the most); if they had fleshed out that part properly it could have added an interesting part to the Star Wars storyline.

The Holiday Special could have been better if they had not cast people such as Bea Arthur and the Jefferson Starship in supporting roles and stuck to the original cast, as well as eliminating Leia singing the Life Day song at the end. Having Chewbacca's family was not so bad, as they could have been seen as Han Solo's substitute family (Chewie being the one Solo trusted the most); if they had fleshed out that part properly it could have added an interesting part to the Star Wars storyline.
