I'm not severely autistic, but I thrive on routine. I still wouldn't like to live in an institution. I agree with you. You certainly have a more cogent argument than that random person from the internet.

There were plenty of other smaller and lessor known institutions very similar to this one.

for 2 decades I lived in a number of them, and so,

this is the very sort of content its very hard for me to address directly as it hits very close to home,

I will say this:

"Routine" that is hardly of your own design and is completely out of your control and entirely at the governorship of others,

"Routine" that includes abuse and neglect is not a "routine" anyone should ever have to experience -- ever

I know exactly who the person "Christschool" is referring to (who it is made the outrageous statements) and no its not Amanda Baggs (but its another upstart of exactly the same ordeal, yet another fraud who isn't as nor has the history she claims).

This one has gone on to change her story many more times and justifying this statement, claiming its the result of her having "Stockholm syndrome" as a result of places she's never been. Her name is Stephanie Lynn Keil.

OMG i did quite a bit of crying while researching extreme cases of institutional abuse last year... Esp.Willowbrook and Pennhurst . My own older autistic brother was incorrectly diagnosed as having childhood schizophrenia and after he became a threat to me as a young child my father felt his behavior could no longer be controlled thus he was institutionalized, and kept in a constant sedated state with thorzine.

I was just a very young child.. i have this flash of a memory of going to visit him and him screaming and pressing his face up to the glass window because he knew we were leaving. That hopeless image has haunted me for my entire life. I think it is very safe to say that he did not like being there and that he missed his family more than my words can even express.

Willowbrook and institutions like it were and are a disgrace. I know many families that must place their children into a facility and it's not an easy decision. Children with autism need structure and love, and I know there are facilities and schools that offer both. My heart goes out to these children and their families

It is true that in most cases that severely Autistic indiviuals do not like change per say. Transitioning can be challenging for sure, but it is also true to be said that all people no matter how high functioning or lower functioning is this: All people, need love and nurturing. Everyone responds to kindness. And for the so called "intelligent people" Please use your superior self to respect those less fortunate than you, and show the compassion you would want had you been they.

As you've seen, our videos show what happens to severe autistics when they are placed in group homes that can't handle them...our son is back home with us and doing much, much better now.....most families don't want to place their autistic children, they are forced to because they are so exhausted and aren't given the proper in home supports to cope.....parents can do it, but you can't do it on 3 hours of sleep a week...can anyone relate? We have nurses help us and that's very helpful.

that place in your video makes me sad and disgusted that this went on, i have seen the video b4 as part of a training i took. i think no two autistic persons are the same and even severe autistics have abilities that people are unaware of. i think anyone who works with these people as kids or adults should consider themselves blessed. the kids i work with make me laugh each day and amaze me. think outside the box when teaching them and you will find they are capable of a lot

who would prefer institutuions.. i think thats nuts. i work with autistic kids and they love to be around other people to varying degrees. i work with a nonverbal child who had a bad reputation and nobody wanted to work with and i found over several months of gaining his trust and learning to understand him that he loves people and he loves to interact when he feels comfortable, just have to open your mind and heart to look incide these kids

doing the same thing every single day for the rest of my life would drive me insane. I have routines, which are ways for me to do things, but I like doing new things, even if they are a little/lot scary at first.

My stepson is 14 years old. He is a "Medium" functioning Autistic . He also has severe OCD, Impulsive Control Dosorder, petite mal siezures. He went down hill when puberty began for him. We have had Our County Mental Health involved, Regional center and Social Services. Our son is very hypersexual. Dr's say he needs RCT Placement . Our son was taken out of the home because of his actions. he has failed being in Group homes. Our son knows he needs RCT & he says it will be better for him.

Can you tell me what RCT stands for? Residential ...Treatment or something?

When did his petite mal seizures begin?

It means Residential Care Treatment. His seizures were diagnosed when he was about 7. his eeg was off the chart, but the doctors did not want to treat them medially because they stated he would grow out of them. nope..that did not happen and nobody still will medicate him. he has about 7-12 a day. Its sad, the mental healthcare for kids in California is bad. My wife and I see it and we are medical professionals.

If he goes to RCT, do you have to give up parental rights? I'm not sure why they are refusing medication. From my understanding, the main form of Treatment in an RCT is medication. If I'm asking too much please let me know I don't want to offend you by asking these questions.

No ask all you want. no offense here, actually at this point we have to make him a ward of the state because thats the only way he can get the correct treatment for his advanced symptoms. In RCT they are actually going to take meds aways since the doctors want to treat him with aggresive therapy to help reteach him and to help him cope. The issue is The regional center has denied him,the AB 3632 program doesnt want to do anything but oupatient & the school disctrict..sees our son as a $ sign-sad

You are absolutely right, autistic kids need new and fun things all the time, but they DO seem to thrive on a schedule. Colin has. :) Thank you for this video CS, I LOVE it, as heart breaking as it is, this needs to be talked about.

O-M-G! 30- 40 patients to ONE caregiver?!? I worked in elderly care for 6 years, and there's NO WAY that even half of those people could have been monitored, much less cared for by one person.

where I work we have 2 caregivers for every 5 residents. A few residents have a 1:1 ratio.
