@o56kid It is very hard to see the line you are trying to cut on the far side of the log. Especially the further down the log you go. Thus cutting just the side closest to you where you can see it easily.
Why not be a man and use an ax like real men did back in the day to build there homes? Oh I forgot there's no such thing as real men in America anymore its all pussies and politics these days.. Brainwashed man brainwashed.. Go primitive pays off more in the end.
@jeremyhall420 Considering I was up before the sun, stood in the rain and cold all day, caught over 30 lbs worth of steelhead trout. I think that makes me man enough. .
@riverjoe47 a log wizard would not work at all for finishing the notches. The fastest easiest and most accurate way to do it is exactly as this video shows. Use the chainsaw.
It's called progress dasgemuse or we could go all the way back in time and use stone axes to cut the joints but then we wouldnt need to because we would be living in caves
@dirtTdude Just watched the video again and saw your comment. While his logs were spruce and small, that doesn't mean you couldn't use a crosscut saw. Lots of trail clearing is done today with them, and the logs are commonly Douglas Fir 4' in diameter. I count 8-9 easy strokes through a 5" dry yellow Pine with my Simonds 520. Dick's saw was a plain tooth, which are very slow and hard cutting compared to raker tooth saws.
@SuperCubPA18 i dont know about all that fancy saw mumbo jumbo is all about, but dick built a cabin by hand and i've built a log cabin by hand do you have any videos of the cabin you built?
@dirtTdude Not yet, I'm falling the trees this fall and winter and putting the cabin up next fall I think after they season. I'll have a few videos of the falling and bucking of the logs up soon. Still taking my time getting tools together, practicing methods, and picking a good site. I'll have a saw sharpening video as well. I'm planning on building with all hand tools, and also a shingle roof if I can. I just like crosscut saws and find they work great for me. Nothing against chainsaws.
dasgemuse, a chainsaw has every right in building a loghome as any other piece of equipment. Log cabins only "stands" for shelter. If the pineers and settlers of this country had chainsaws they sure as hell would have used them. I f you want to build a loghome with an axe feel free but don't rag anyone else for doing it. Especially when it's probably a company trying to finish in the shortest amount of time

a chain saw goes against everything a log cabin stands for. use an axe. even if it takes you a year longer you will be much more humble and proud of your work.
good

I wonder how long will it take you to finish all the stuff? The cuttings seem not that fast. However, seeing the results is all worth the wait.

@jeremyhall420 not to mention that this doesn't look any faster than using a saw, axe and chisel

I'd rather make the general notch with the chainsaw then the more of the smoothing and fitting I'd finish out with a logwizard

i'm not that good with a chainsaw,i'd mess it up bad.i'll stick with my trusty axe lol.

IS HE SANDING WITH SAW?
mydeardiaries 2 years ago

You can't build a cabin with only an axe, you would use a crosscut saw for the sawing.
