  • I DID A BOOK REVIEW OF CITY OF BONES, I'D REALLY APPRECIATE IF ANYONE WOULD TAKE A LOOK I'd LOVE SOME FEEDBACK :)

  • @coolgirlrules702 HAHAHAHA well BULLSHIT to you tooXD... well what book hasn't borrowed from othersXD? besides, wats so different about using runes & waving wands? also, there is a KIDS book by rick riordon (who wrote percy jackson, cheesy as hell but so funny & entertainingXD) w/ egyptian mythology, "the red pyramid." symbols that grant power??? they use hieroglyphics to channel their powerXD. so yeah, cassandra clare is SO ORIGINAL i dont care who came up with the idea first, its not original.

  • Where do you download the audiobooks from ?

  • I have one thing to say. Obviously, you hate YA, so why do you read it?

  • @DestinyHollow lol I love YA. I want to write YA in the future.

  • Loved the books, the characters... i understand you point of view but you a whole lot of shit... and you should read the whole series before judging so much.

  • maybe because i read the 4th book first that is why like the series...

  • lol i wouldn't read it if i heard this first... lol but it is a guilty pleasure.

  • I read the first paragraph and put down.

  • Comment removed

  • I picked it up. Read it and i saw that it was going to be another crappy twilight knock off and i'll admit I couldn't finish it.

  • I agree. I hated this book. So much.

  • I agree City of Bones was rather boring, but I still think Evermore (and the rest of the Immortal series) is the worst I've ever read.

  • I agree with you on most things but this one, of course this book isn't completely original but i liked it, and actually liked all the characters in it, it had twists in it, and it was a page turner. I definitely thought it was better then twilight, house of night, and errr evermore. But im not judging u for your opinion everyone has one its just my opinion. But keep on reading the young adult fiction my personal favorites are the Gemma Doyle trilogy, Blue Bloods series and others

  • I started reading City of Bones and I couldn't finish it. I just didn't like it all. To be honest I always hated the normal girl falls in love with the supernatural guy type of genre.

  • I Almost all the time agree with you, but I didn't hate this like you did. I liked the book. But it was predictable and very mixed up without a clear narrative. I also read Marked and Absolutely hated it and do not want to read its sequel but this I will read the sequel. But I still Love to hear your thought and opinions.

  • Thank god, I thought I was the only one who hated this book.

  • I officiallly love you. Not that I didn't love before. But I read City of Bones, found it unmemorable, and then when I think back I realized how much the characters and plot sucks.

I disagree with you. House of Night is worse. I hate Zoey!

  • @AmeliaElizabethCasey am sure wizards do not study angelic writing. And btw, every book has similarities, ehem The Vampire Diaries, and The twilight saga but it isn't necessarily considered plagiarism. I read all seven Harry Potter's, and honestly not many things relate to TMI. Just because they use some kind of magic doesn't mean it was plagiarized off Harry Potter...I would say Hush Hush, and Crescendo have more similarities to The Mortal Instruments since they have Nephilim in them

  • I really liked CoB the first time I read it. Not the best, but a fun read. Your review made me go back and reread it. And now my opinion has completely changed. S'pose I just didn't analyze it the first time through. Already I'm tempted to throw CoB away and reread "Tricks" (which I HATED), because, while it wastes trees, at least the latter's better-written. (Albeit, at this point,I still like Simon. That's worth something isn't it?)

  • @InkSpilling YAY FINALLY SOMEONE WHO'S ACTUALLY A SIMON FAN :D Everyone bashes poor SIMON!!

  • This review kinda reiterates why I abandoned this genre completely (well I guess it's technically not a genre, but it gets its own genre category at book stores =/). They all sound the same, anyway. It was impossible for me to go back to these types of books after reading the A Song of Ice and Fire series =)

  • THANK YOU I completely agree with you. I did not like this book, but a few of my friends love this book to death, so I thought that maybe I was just missing something. I'm glad I'm not the only one who found this book to be really boring and the main characters really stupid. I couldn't even finish it.

  • GURLLL, what are you drinking?

  • I started reading City of bones online in the beginning of the year and I was instantly disappointedThe villian was such a blant Voldemort rip-off I stopped reading.Cassnadra Claire as a whole is one glorified fanfic author, whose Draco Trilogy became so popular, because it ripped off an entire season of Buffy.BTW,were you bored ,when reading Twilight or just amused by the stupidity? You did managed to stomach all of Mrs. Meyer's work, including The host.

  • I don't understand why people (a few commenters) are getting upset. A review is YOUR opinion, then they state their opinion..claiming theirs is right and yours is wrong. They can't give their opinion and say it's inherently right.

Anyway, awesome review. When I read City Of Bones it took me forever to get through because it just kept getting worse and worse...and worse. Dreadful book. It is now hidden in my closet. I am ashamed of owning it :)

  • One of my friends really liked City of Bones, but was so disappointed with Clockwork Angel. Maybe it depends on which you read first?

I haven't finished City of Bones because I got tired of it. D: It moves too slow for me.

  • i read the first couple pages of city of bones and i instantly didnt like clary.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm glad there is at least one person understands how bad this book is. The worst thing for me is that the story was completely predictable. There was not a twist that I hadn't guessed over a hundred pages beforehand, which is why this is the only series I could not finish once I started.

  • Oh God. Evermore is better?

    Like, really?

Dude, I couldn't even get into that book after reading Twilight.

  • @Zoe67304 Rosalie is treated as a negative character, Jace is not

  • @MelinaPendulum Jace is treating everyone ELSE bad.(Much like Bella) Everyone defends Jace but no one gives a damn for Simon. "Oh Jace's fake dad/real dad died OMG poor Jace!!" But when Simon's ACTUALY dad did die ppl went:Oh who fucking cares. When Jace gets his heart broken by Clary ppl say:OMG JACE! If it's Simon people go:Who cares....Go Clace! It's because Jace is the guy EVERYONE (well..SIMON) knows he's bad but no one listens. It's how everything is getting told.

  • And ummm i didn't know wizards used runes? since when? Just because Valentine and Voldemort have similarities DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE THE SAME! The quality they really share is that they are evil and controlling, but what antagonist isn't? honestly.

  • @robbie5220 yes, they do use runes in HP.

  • Comment removed

  • @MelinaPendulum So, I don't think you are on to anything, telling me they use runes in Harry Potter, I don't think that they are the same things as the runes in the Mortal Instruments. Just because Clare wrote a fanfiction piece about Harry Potter, doesn't mean that she took all of J.K. Rowlings ideas. EVERY, Good vs. Evil type story has a similar plot. Most villains have shady pasts, and antagonize with the good guy. Harry Potter is a great series, but I honestly don't know how everything-

  • @MelinaPendulum How everything relates to Harry Potter...Clare may have used some things from Harry Potter, but it isn't really anything criminal. All writer's use small little things, but it doesn't mean it is plagiarism, try finding a teen fiction novel about the supernatural that does not mention vampires, witches, nephilim, demons, warlocks, wizards or anything similar. And really there are always character's that are arrogant, does not mean it is all plagiarism.

  • @MelinaPendulum you want to talk similar look at The Vampire Diaries, which has a publishing date of 1991, and Twilight, who's publishing date is in 2003 or 2005 somewhere around there. There are so many character similarities it is sick. Psychics, mind reading vampires, Shape-Shifters. The love story between Strefan and Elena and Bella and Edward is even similar. Stefan wanting Elena to tell people where she is when alone with him, or that her blood is so sweet smelling he could kill to get it

  • @MelinaPendulum Or ignoring Elena for weeks like Edward did, so you are trying to tell me that The mortal instruments is overly similar to Harry Potter, but honestly you can seriously take a look to almost every fantasy romance, good vs. evil type thing, they all have similarities. When you write, it isn't plagiarism because you use a similar concept, if it was than every author out there would be watching there asses for a lawsuit.

  • @MelinaPendulum Bullshit. In HP, runes is an ancient language. In Mortal instruments, their symbols that grant powers.

BTW, I find it hilarious that you think CoB owes HP, even though HP did more then its fair share of "borrowing".

  • @MelinaPendulum The difference between Morgenstern and Voldemort is that Voldemort works as a concept and Morgenstern doesn't.

I agree about Jace, he was a smart alec and obviously was not impressed with the world the series lays out. If the characters are not impressed by a world, then the readers won't be either. Jace infects the reader with his lack of enthusiasm for the story.

  • Respond to this video...

  • @Zoe67304

Rosalie and Bella aren't meant to be love interests the way that Jace and Clary are.

  • Is "The Host" better?

  • @librabeauty23 The Host is awesome!

  • @GDCLA ...the one by Stephanie Meyer?

  • @librabeauty23 Yes! aliens and stuff.... pretty cool!

  • I listened it during a road trip, before the second disc was done my mother ordered me to stop playing it, and I did not resist.

  • Well you saved me from buying a stupid series, almost bought all three paperbacks for 3.99 at a used books store. But I put it away from manga. Thank god I did then. Lol. It's really sad when you end up hating a book you read b/c the author's other series sucked. Hopefully you'll review something awesome soon.

  • @DeathCatEyes You should buy it... it's an amazing series and worth reading... Jace is by far one of the best male characters ever and Clary becomes a kick ass female lead. This review sucks big time.

  • Something worse than Twilight? That must be one TERRIBLE book.

  • "It's not my fault your parents are DEAD."

I admit, I totally burst out laughing at that.

  • I love the way you get all sassy talking about this piece of shit! ;)

  • @SiriusisLove you, dear sir or madam, couldn't have made a more correct statement and for that I thank you.

  • I enjoyed reading the book (i think I would've hated it if I had listened to it on audio book though) but I concur with everything you said about the books really...CA is basically CoB in a different setting, Clary and Jace are fanon Ginny and Draco (right down to physical descriptions) and it totally lacks in the originality department (there's even comparisons to HP I didn't notice while reading, like The Mortal Instruments = Deathly Hallows, cup hidden in a very philosophers stone way etc.).

  • By the way, have you read Michael Scott's Nicholas Flamel series? I'm curious about what you have to say about it.

  • Though I do agree City of Bones isn't worth shit, I don't agree that it's worse than Twilight. At least it has an actual plot that's semi-exciting. And I don't really see how it's a ripoff of Harry Potter--they seem really different to me. I can see how Jace is basically Cassandra Clare's dream Draco, but that's pretty much the most obviously Harry Potter thing.

  • @thexshattered

    Valentine=Voldemort

They both have the prejudice thing (though TMI fails so hard at that)

  • @ZeroMyHero99 Jace and Valintine act ALIKE I'm surprised the two aren't father and son XD

  • The song in the introduction is Du Hast by Ramnstein.

  • Whats the music in the animation I can't remember the name..

  • Someone said that Cassandra Clare is WAY better than Jo Rowling...is this person sh**ing me?? Better than Rowling?? oh heck no she ain't. >:O

  • My mom went to a bookstore and asked a person working there to recommend something for someone who hated Twilight. The person recommended it and she surprised me with it. It was not as bad as Twilight, but it was close. It was predictable and boring and I despised the main character. The major sibling cock-blocking part was funny, but I've seen it done before.

  • :(, Valentine is my Vampire character's name...It's okay though, my future book is satire... :). Great vid, I never liked Cassandra Clare and I will not read anything by her.

  • Random question: Is Clary as abusive as Lightning from FFXIII?

  • Now that deserves a massive round of applause. xD

  • call a bitch a bitch

  • I like the books, but I just don't give a damn about any of these characters. Which is wierd for me.

  • Twilight is better than City of Bones? That is just...sad... I think that, is what told me I should not read this book...

Because anything worse than Twilight...should not even be considered a piece of writing.

  • @MsLizDWiz I like all the books untill the last book...I was thinking, "Really?" but other than that, the series was pretty good, not so romancy which was also a good thing. I liked the action parts. :3 I hope Melina does a review/rant on the series too.

  • @MsLizDWiz

I haven't read that book yet, how is it?

  • I've been waiting FOREVER for this. Thanks for making my millenium.

  • I turn myself down occassionally, just to make things interesting". ~Jace. WTF?? that made no sense to me-sorta it did-but it wasn't humorous or smart, I just rolled my eyes. "yeah, Jace you just say that becuase you're full of yourself. Shut up, and go continue to kiss your reflection in the mirror." :P some of the 'jokes' presented in the book didn't fit, the jokes in COB was JUST stupid. I read the book feeling emty, sold it to half price and got 5 bucks from it.

  • In City of Ashes, there was a character named Maia who wasn't that bad. But then when I was reading some of the reviews for City of Fallen Angels, it just seems that Cassandra Clare ruined her.

  • Comment removed

  • Ahhhh American Gods !!!! Niel Gaiman is a god ^_^

  • Didn't bother reading this book because Meyer gave it positive reviews. I guess that was a good call :P

  • I agree with you on everything!

  • This story. I was in Harry Potter before I wiggled in to Star Wars and shortly after I landed in some terrible afternoon soap opera full of jerks. I regret taking that ride full of bull. The characters didn't grow or learn from their mistakes, didn't make a connection with me, didn't drive the story, ect. And the plot and situations are ridiculous. The characters were thrown in to situations and made choices that furthered the "plot". Not what they would do (based on their "personalities"). GAH.

  • "What is better than CIty of Bones? Twilight! Twilight is better than City of Bones."

Good lord, the cycle of shit lit is never gonna end, is it?

  • Clary was such a snobby little prick. I hated her character. The only thing that I can praise her for is taking initiative in some situations, but a lot of the time that crosses over to self-entitlement. Like why the fuck does she go around slapping everyone? Seriously, she's ridiculously abusive.

  • I read about two chapters of this book and then gave up because I thought it was boring and terrible. At least it made for a nice video.

  • Wow, Twilight is better than this book. Will be sure to stay away.

  • "biggest twist in sci-fi history."

Oh dear...Valentine is somebody's father, isn't he? That's just...lame. Everyone knows where a "twist like that comes from; I've never seen a Star Wars movie and I'm aware of the Darth Vedar/Luke twist. Sweet Moses.

Clary. Maybe it's unfair, but somehow, that name tells me everything I need to know about this work. Everything.

Great to see you doing book reviews again! You are a bright spot on my day.

  • @ShalomDove

    MASSIVE SPOILER!!

Valentine is Clary and Jace's father! Prepare for the most drawn out teen angst of all time.

  • @ZeroMyHero99

    MASSIVE SPOILER

    No he's not. xD

  • @Malanrea

Yeah I know, I just didn't want to spoil the rest in case the person hadn't read it.

  • @ZeroMyHero99 Exactly! In fact, I went a found a spolier online that indicates she stole something else from Lucas that makes everything even more meoldramatic than the father thing...sweet moses...

  • I love that you're casually drinking juice throughout this video.

  • You have some very good points in this video. To tell you the truth, i really didn't notice the Harry Potter points were in the book, since I don't really go into a book that much to notice things. The Clary/Jace story line is horrible and frankly, I was bored with it. Still do. I kept reading the book just for the Alec/Magnus scenes and i wished there were more but sadly, there were barely any scenes with them. I still like the books but at least you tried it and gave reasons why you hate it.

  • @CompassRoseFour

I love Alec/Magnus. In fact they're the only reason i'm bothering with the new books. I actually like them but Jace, Clary, and Simon annoy the hell out of me.

  • i saw this book on the "best selling" shelf in a local bookstore. and damn, i'm glad i didn't pick it up. it looked horrible, at that moment. and now i know for sure.

  • Comment removed

  • I will avoid spoilers, but I TOTALLY know what she's talking about "the twist ending rip-off" and I know EXACTLY what sci-fi thing she's referring to. Totally a rip off.

  • well she mentioned George Lucas if you can't figure out what's she talking about from that : /

  • I went to the library yesterday and was going to pick City of Bones up. But then my spidy sense tingled telling me that this book was complete garbage. And your review confirmed my premonition. If you want another shitty book to read how about Hush Hush. You can have my copy. :)

  • I couldn't even finish it ... and that was back before I liked twilight (I'm anti twilight now, so this is a long time ago) and actually liked these kinds of books. This book was the first to repel me from this genre.

  • You should have your own TV show. Just Melina all-day, 24/7. I'd watch it. Not in a creepy way; you're just really entertaining to listen to/watch. You're so comfortable in front of the camera, you really seem like you're talking *to* us -- not to a lens. I don't even read books...but I sit down and watch your book reviews!

  • @Zhaquiri Oh,God.I would not leave the TV if it would be a show like that...*dreamy eyes*.For me, listening to Melina is as interesting and captivating as interesting likwPlesu and Liiceanu arguing/chatting about literature (it IS interesting, even if sometimes you want to break that TV screen because Plesu says something which practically contradicts everything he has been arguing with Liiceanu about. Those writers have been translated, but the show is only in my country).

  • 7:39-7:44 You are so cuuute! That tiny part right there is equivalent to a clip of a kitty who hiccups and farts at the same time.

  • Clary Fray ... YOU'RE NOT PRETTY, SO GO OUT THERE AND RISK YOURSELF. God damn it. How can you hang around with Shadowhunters, then screech and run when something dangerous comes after them? IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T HANG OUT WITH THEM, HONEY.

If Clary and Jace were in the Harry Potter books, Draco Malfoy would kick their asses. He's beautiful, sarcastic and deadly. Everything Jace fails at, everything Clary wants ... I just had to point that out. :D

  • I've been waiting for your review of this and I agree with you wholeheartedly on all points. :)

  • I HATED Clary, she's the worst. People MOCK Simon for loving Clary, they pick on him all the time when he does MORE THAN FUCKING CLARY! He is my favorite character even if he's bashed due to the whole SimonxClaryxJace issue. Twilight is better since Bella and Edward atleast waited before having sexy, Clace tried to. There is a 'I hate Simon' thread on Good reads and he doesn't deserve it. He's bashed completely by all of them and he gets no sympathy while an ass does. How rude.

  • Does this mean that you're not finishing the Clockwork angel series? I actually wanted to read that after your positve review about it...

  • Yeah, try to read something from Amanda Hocking. Would love to know your thoughts on her writting.

  • This series is fanfiction of fanfiction, The Infernal Devices is a fanfiction of that...she seems to be only able to reuse one set of characters with different names, along with the same plot.

I didn't hate this series, but I just think it's mediocre.

  • I swear to God, when this first showed up in my subscription box, I thought it said, 'Game of Thrones Book review' XD

  • Thank You! Hated with a passion everyone and everything in this book. Especially the racism thing, it was just out of control, I just kept thinking "what the hell? I´m supposed to root for these idiots?" Just so f*cking dumb.

  • "She has to save her mother.... from like, bullshit" Brilliant synopsis, hehe!

  • i agree. i love your necklace, where did you get it from?

  • I've been waiting for this review due to all the hate you gave this book; I thought your review would be funny and it is!

Loved this video and loved this review

  • you mentioned that smeyer likes the cover of city of bones in the wicked lovely and fanfiction video!

  • I HATED Clary Fray. She could do absolutely nothing for herself! I mean Bella was supposedely clumsy in Twilight, but Clary just took the cake for useless clumsiness in my opinion. She was always falling all over Jace and every single fight scene I would literally yell at my book "Do SOMETHING for God's sake!" only to end up frustrated. Then the only time she manages to do anything it turns out she's actually thrown a dagger at one of her saviors. FACEPALM.

  • you should read "My blood approves" by amanda hocking. I've heard it's a really bad book but I'd love to hear your opinion on it. great review though. :)

  • completely agree, hands down

  • I completely agree with you Melina. It's hard to follow a story when you don't care what happens to the characters because they're douche bags. I can't stand in books where the male lead treats the girl like shit and we as the audience are expected to believe he likes/loves her; I'm like, 'Bullshit, what relationships have you been in?' I'm actually more receptive to asshole characters when they're unapologetic about how they are, then the whole sad back story cliche.

  • I loved reading the Mortal Instruments series, kind of my cup of tea even if certain things were lost on me. xD You have a LOT of good points though, especially with the Clary-Jace "TWIST" at the end of CoB. Even if you DON'T have the spoiler, you just KNOW the truth, and that kind of... ruins the so-called twist. And I'm kind of sick of these fairly simplistic love triangles already. I didn't know the Park Slope thing though, so that's interesting.

    Your reviews are hilarious! :3

  • @ornamentelle Also, I don't understand what's up with these arrogant jackasses in YA literature either. People with bad pasts don't all wind up being condenscending jerks.

It's probable that the Mortal Instruments was influenced by anime. The creatures with colorful hair and otaku references... The official website has "reference art" of the characters in anime style too. >>'

I agree with a previous poster; you should review GONE by Michael Grant.

  • @ornamentelle

Why can't we have characters like Yuki from Fruits Basket (if you haven't seen it watch it). He had a sucky past and tries to be as friendly as possible as a result. Where are those characters?

  • @ZeroMyHero99 Yuki! Oh, so true... Come to think of it, Fruits Basket was pretty much all about people with crappy pasts... and they all sort of had different ways of coping with it, like Momiji!

But no, apparently happy go-lucky boys (or at least NICE) are totally not badass enough to be leads.

  • Worse than Twilight, Evermore, Personal Demons, and House of Night?

...My god, I must read this book.

In all seriousness, when I first picked up Clockwork Angel, I'd never heard of City of Bones or any of the other books in that series. I really liked Clockwork Angel--and from that standpoint, reading another book with the same plot and character types written by the same author really isn't appealing to me. Even if this had been a good review, I'll pass this one up.

  • *claps happily*

Thank you soooo much for reviewing this.

My friends absolutely love these books and I hate them so much.

Clary is a moron, getting sick of those girls that fall for the asshole.

Jace I just want to punch in the face.

Thanks for your insight into Brooklyn just made me hate the book more.

ive read the 2nd and 3rd one and they are just as bad.

it is nice to know there is actually someone sane

  • Hey melina, can you review Gone by Micheal Grant. It's really popular at my school but I want to hear your thoughts before I get it. Btw, I'm glad someone hates this book besides me xD Awesome review

  • It makes me sad how highly praised this book is by many teenagers.

  • It's 3 in the morning, and the minute I saw the title I knew I had to watch it.....This review couldn't have been more hilariously RIGHT. I would read twilight another time before reading City of Bones again. Yup. It oozed Harry Potter, Star wars...just, she has to stop writing.

    YA authors also seem to be having trouble with their senses;

Clare (Tasting colours...WTF?), Adornetto (Eyes the colour of thunder).....Are they all going insane?

*sigh* Atleast you got to listen to it.
