Good track, but the video is fu**en stupid. Stop trying to scare people, we could get hit by a bus. Anyone one of us could die at anytime, I do not need to hear this bullshit that we will die from toxins within a computer.
Well, if you want to know how our world will look like in 800 years: Watch the Movie "Wall-E". Even though it's an animated film, the TIME magazine had put it on the top of their list "Best Movies of the Decade". (With Lord of the Rings on the second place).
First, all those figures, as good as they are, get more and more twisted and transformed when you pile them up like that, and look more drastic to most onlookers who, none of which, quite understand how much nature itself causes. And these "finite" resources that so many speak of are nearly just as "infinite" as any other alternative, such as water. Does carbon not re-enter plants and slowly finds its way back into our earth to be turned back into coal? They don't just go to non-existence-land.
Well, first, I completely agree with MoviesPlayGround. Most of the talk dealing with "global warming" is as much propaganda as Y2K and Y2012. But it's not completely untrue, we do add to the worlds "cycle" with our wasteful lifestyles. Two main things to consider though.
What is the solution to all this? We are bombared with problems but nobody gives us a hint about what to do. I don't think recycling is the solution. Maybe the solution is shutting the hell up.
i guess we're slowly killing ourselves... how does an advanced civilization die? same as the others have. I think by the time the next advanced civilization arises the earth will have healed itself again.
um...no offence but it would be more like wed fuck up the atmosphere so much that it would be uninhabitable...wer already killing everything else ,the eco system we rely on so much is being killed off ,yes i know nature is quite resilient but like most things they need time to recover and wer not exactly slowing down...i hope that made sense...
@newellboy2 it's climate change, my man. differences in convection cycles, the warming of waters and changing of airflows. that's why it's snowed in places that never expect to have snow, and why other places are hot as hell.
I here what this vid is saying. But, what are you supposed to do? Go back to the Stone Age? Consume less? That would postpone our demise, yes? But isn't that kinda selfish? Making sure that the Earth doesn't die during our lifetime, but during our great grandchildren's lifetime? :\
That's what being human is all about. Knowing our demise and knowing that nothing can be done about it. The Earth won't last forever. Along with everything else, it will die. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't... I don't know... Try at least? Try to make things better?
But you are right. I hope that the Earth dies during my lifetime.
@Resistanceband lol, we could do things like cut down on a lot of the excess that modern civilization so demands. think about what's actually important to our persons rather than just being avid consumers of everything that tickles our fancies. we can also use our awesome human brains to apply science to the issue, which is largely being done, and continue to innovate about ways to approach electronics, manufacturing etc that least harm our planet and its ecosystems.
All eye opening stuff, but could have been expressed in more constructive ways perhaps. The way it's done here, it makes me feel guilty for having been born. That helps no one.
you forgot about cows! they produce all what was said times 20, and then some..My point is, I like thom, but don't be the victim of propaganda...The earth would do the same if we where not on it...That's the truth! Ice caps melt do to a cycle are planet goes though ever 12,000 years. NOT DO TO US (HUMANS) AT ALL! They? make us think that, just so we can go and consume more. Oh no! the end of the world is coming, go get shit to survive...Hint! Wake UP world!
You might be right that its a natural cycle for the planet. We have not been studying and recording temperatures for that long.
Even if that is the case it does not excuse our wasteful society. Oil, coal, fish, bees - are all finite resources. We need to be more respectful of that fact.
I think that these problems should be the least of our worries, life is down a destructive road that will end in the next 500-1000 years due to many different problems
@MoviesPlayGround In the Antarctic it snows less than 2inches/year. Yet, there is an ice shelf hundreds of feet deep resting on bedrock. This tells us that there is millions of years worth of compacted snow there. By taking ice core drillings, scientists can deduce what the CO2 (and every other gas, for that matter) content in the atmosphere was at an approximate date in history... Dating back millions of year.. Not only can they do this, but they have done this..
@MoviesPlayGround Guess what their findings were.. Yes, every 10-12k years there is a spike in CO2 levels. But since the industrial revolution those levels have grown higher than the previous millions of years, EXPONENTIALLY!! Never before the industrial revolution had the CO2 ppm count risen above 300 ppm.. It's now above 650ppm.. That is not propaganda, it's scientific fact..
@MoviesPlayGround Just because it's not convenient to your lifestyle to be responsible for what you do, does not mean that you should spew the same jargon that propagates the ignorance that is hindering any progress. Facts are brought to light by scientists as economic catalysts, they're revealed so that we might, as you say, "Wake UP" and do something to reduce our ignorant destruction of our own life support... Agreed, WAKE THE FUCK UP!
It is true that global warming is a natural cycle but humanes have managed to speed this process by 10 years. Hence, species don't have time to evolve and therefore they go extinct. There are things such as the holes in the ozone layer that have been made over time do to the increase in CO2 emissions.
it's impossible to be free of blame. We're all guilty, for some there is little shame in it, we are only just learning. For many, they know of the effects and ignore them. They continue, they consume, and they always want more. I don't know what can or ever would be done about such people. But I suspect it would be nothing, I expect such greedy selfish people to be the first to board a plane, boat or car out of the sinking islands.
that's it. i'm destroying my car, getting rid of my computer, and having my electricity turned off. i'm also going to cut down every tree i can find, because trees are used to make paper. and what does paper cause? papercuts. think of all the papercuts i could eliminate! when i have finished all that, i'm going to kill myself. why? because i exhale carbon dioxide, and in doing so, i pollute the atmosphere. thank you, elev3nuk!!!
lol is it bad that i leave everything i own on all the time because i know other people are trying to conserve, and i feel i should make up for them to keep global warming on track?
Not entirley sure I agree with you smacking Thom's name on that, unless he activley endorses your message, isn't it a bit unethical to imply that he does?
I don't disagree with you on an enviromental basis FYI, just a ethical one
Thom set the brief as part of the D&AD student awards 2007. He was aware of the top entries and this video was the winner... so I think all is well :)
What's the point in having a safer world if it means we can't have fun, which is what you're video seems to suggest. If you cared that much you wouldn't hyave made it.
He clearly said that "there has to be a better way" of producing energy. He is suggesting that the governments should invest more money on researching alternative energy-resources...
dude, right at 2:54, if you have the volume turned up high, you can hear someone elses voice, I cant identify them, low pitched, sounds like they are saying some random comment like "nice tommy" or somthing.. it stops at like 2:55 or 56... I wana know what that is lol!
That was pretty good to watch just a quick note, may I suggest you check out my vers. of the vid, it's using Metal gear solid clips so, it might not be understood unless you're familiar with the whole patriots scenario.
well that's what the maker of this vid meant, that thought they establish n opinion making video with facts that can substantiate something to be a very dangerous climatic situation, they pretty much have predicted that they might not be heard because of maybe our attention not fully focused on the video or maybe because they know these resulting patterns of pollution won't stop. Was it a waste to get the message to you is the question, and it simply implies that their should be better way.
im all for doing what we can for the environment, but are we really supossed to give up our TVs, stereos, computers, cars, planes, electricity, and even our paper to stop global warming, whcih may or may not even exist? i don't know... i think this video is kind of a waste of time.
It's a riddle to me why everyone is so keen when it comes blaming the Bush administrating for rigging Iraq reports so their lobbyists can make easy money of some war while on the other side the Hugh industry around the climate just gets a free pass with everything they say. They lie to get more money in the very same way.
would it mean to go agaisnt wide socialism and distribution of public awareness? how can a world-wide warning be addressed one person at a time, especially when individually everyone at the same time is saying the same thing? the same song? the same message? It's no doubt significant, but also kind of sad in a way. It's an oxymoron how this video sands a message I mean, was this really a waste?
This is a very well made response to the D&AD brief, I have seen quite a few other entries. A lot of obvious metaphorical imagery, I like the idea of simply converting those ideas into text and presenting it that way. You'd think that this would eliminate any futile debate over 'meaning' but the idiots still need to disagree about something.
People need their art spoon fed to them, searching themselves for something that sounds like an intelligent opinion, they bypass relevance in favour of 'put downs.'
But- all it is is well designed (and i mean very well designed) text flipping up to the music. But what was it marked on?? Social awareness?
That isn't a good reason to give the award at all!
Nice link to the concerns of Thom Yorke and the song (of course) but so much more could have been made here, with an equally interesting anti-media spin in it.
Congrats on the d&ad win....I watched this video a few months ago on here and I absolutely loved it. Definately made me say 'I wish I had done that!' (despite the screams of 'tooo simple' from those that I played it to.....what do they know?) and so the best student award was well deserved. I won a pencil myself the other night too.....good times!
I am utterly confused. Are you saying there IS a better way? If so, what is it? To exist is to consume. If this is a backlash against the hyperbole surrounding global warming, it's good. If it's supposed to be a genuine warning... it's pessimistic, unrealistic and doesn't offer any solutions as far as I can see.
I wanted the video to get people to think. I'm not offering a better way, if I could I would be either rich or working for an environmental agency to solve all our problems. I do not agree that to "exist is to consume", I do find much happiness in anything that I buy but I do in the people I have around me and in the things I create. Maybe this is the first place to start? If everyone stops consuming and figures out what really matters to them it would be a step in the right direction.
But in the video you point out that the very act of creating it used resources... Perhaps we have different definitions of "consume" - because in my opinion "if everyone stops consuming" is unreasonable and, more importantly, impossible. REDUCING consumption of resources is one thing, but stopping it all together...?
I totally agree. Creating work like this is using resources and its one thing I am trying to improve on and look at in my work. I do not think we could stop consumption entirely (my bad choice of words), after all we need to eat and drink but it can definitely be improved upon.
Regarding the source that you sent to me, I found many errors on the page. As one specific example, "cars cannot exceed a real speed of more than 5 miles per hour" That's false, my car well exceeds that rate and I have a sample size of over 100 000 KM to work with.
Don't believe everything that you read on the internet. Good that you found sources but that page you showed me isn't a valid source; it's garbage.
That sentence is used in a different context in the article (it is talking about averages, something you should know about being so good at maths)...This conversation is over.
Yea, conversations over. Who do think u are. Maybe do better research u jackass. Thom Yorke isn't stupid. He would never have done this if it was sssooooo inacurate. Get an IQ of 134 and then let me know something new you retard.
The production of one car creating 15 000 kg of waste and 75 million cubic metres of polluted air? With over 600 million cars in existance, are you trying to tell me that each one of them produced all that stuff individually, creating a total of 9 -trillion- kg of waste as well as 45 -quadrillion- (4.5 x 10^16) cubic metres of pollution? Keeping in mind that the volume of the earth is only about 1.083207 x 10^18 cubic metres.
That information came from: afo(dot)sandelman(dot)ca(forward slash)cc1(dot html) . The article explores the environmental effects of a car being produced in Germany. You are right, the figures seem high but I would not make up figures for "impact" value. All the figures in the video have sources.
I have an idea for you: how about next time you make a video, you actually look into the numbers. Don't just make stuff up like you did with this one, it's really annoying.
Everyone, please ignore the comment of Phippsy115. He left his Youtube logged on in uni and we took advantage of that by posting traditional british student stupid comments. No offence. Love the vid by the way! Apologies!
u can hardly hate the man he is very gd at wot he does amaaazing musician and saying fuck you to a man hu is trying his best to use his talents to help us kick the goverment up the ass isnt the wisest of things to do fools I say!!
Yes I copied the BP branding, looked at the adverts, logo etc and merged this with Thom Yorkes own visual style. Luckily the BP Helios and the red decoration on Thom Yorkes album are very similar.
and btw.. i think this is a really clever idea. the kind of project d&ad will lap up. ive gone for a simple animation and am now regretting it heh. i guess ill just have sthng for my portfolio at least
It was a bit too pesimisstic for me. Of course we are using energy but who is to say that it is not replacable in some way or another- I agree that we are too focussed on fossil fuels and the petrol heads need a good kicking! According to some leading physicists the universe is expanding faster and faster so eventually all the energy will become too dispersed and all matter will decay into low energy photons. So lets enjoy energy while we have it- but respect the planet at the same time!
It is interesting to see different perspectives of how the song is interpreted. The brief (from the D&AD awards) suggested the song was about global warming.
Good track, but the video is fu**en stupid. Stop trying to scare people, we could get hit by a bus. Anyone one of us could die at anytime, I do not need to hear this bullshit that we will die from toxins within a computer.

Cheers! Congrats on your pencil, I had a fantastic evening... definitely good times!

Phyte 4 years ago
I wanted the video to get people to think. I'm not offering a better way, if I could I would be either rich or working for an environmental agency to solve all our problems. I do not agree that to "exist is to consume", I do find much happiness in anything that I buy but I do in the people I have around me and in the things I create. Maybe this is the first place to start? If everyone stops consuming and figures out what really matters to them it would be a step in the right direction.
elev3nuk 4 years ago
But in the video you point out that the very act of creating it used resources... Perhaps we have different definitions of "consume" - because in my opinion "if everyone stops consuming" is unreasonable and, more importantly, impossible. REDUCING consumption of resources is one thing, but stopping it all together...?
Phyte 4 years ago

Mephistopheles18746 4 years ago
That sentence is used in a different context in the article (it is talking about averages, something you should know about being so good at maths)...This conversation is over.
elev3nuk 4 years ago
Yea, the guy is stupid. He thinks he's right. He's probably sitting around looking at porn than proving himself right.
weareignorant 4 years ago
Yea, conversations over. Who do think u are. Maybe do better research u jackass. Thom Yorke isn't stupid. He would never have done this if it was sssooooo inacurate. Get an IQ of 134 and then let me know something new you retard.
weareignorant 4 years ago
Umm, weareignorant, i don't know if you realize that this is a fan-made video. Thom had nothing to do with it.

Mephistopheles18746 4 years ago
That information came from: afo(dot)sandelman(dot)ca(forward slash)cc1(dot html) . The article explores the environmental effects of a car being produced in Germany. You are right, the figures seem high but I would not make up figures for "impact" value. All the figures in the video have sources.

I have an idea for you: how about next time you make a video, you actually look into the numbers. Don't just make stuff up like you did with this one, it's really annoying.
Mephistopheles18746 4 years ago
I did a lot of research for the video, what bit do you think is inaccurate? Let me know and ill try and find you links etc of where I obtained it.
elev3nuk 4 years ago
You can make your video using recycled stuff :) or just write options to what can we do to make it better before we all start crying....
Good work!
anoshnea 4 years ago
Thats a nice idea, I could have made the whole thing from recycled imagery and objects. Thanks for your feedback!
elev3nuk 4 years ago
u can have a look at aours. not that its better or anything like that but that is part of our idea...
I think its cool so see here what others have done, such great ideas! :)

Everyone, please ignore the comment of Phippsy115. He left his Youtube logged on in uni and we took advantage of that by posting traditional british student stupid comments. No offence. Love the vid by the way! Apologies!

I liked this video so much that I used the text and idea on my D&AD brief. Good work. I think I may win. Cheers.

Haven't seen the album, and personally I hate Thom Yorke :) But good job nonetheless. I like how the very end is sort of a 'Fuck you' to him.

Did you intentionally go for it having a similar feel to those BP adverts? If so, very clever. If not, pretend you did.
HurtByTheSun 5 years ago
Yes I copied the BP branding, looked at the adverts, logo etc and merged this with Thom Yorkes own visual style. Luckily the BP Helios and the red decoration on Thom Yorkes album are very similar.

and btw.. i think this is a really clever idea. the kind of project d&ad will lap up. ive gone for a simple animation and am now regretting it heh. i guess ill just have sthng for my portfolio at least

daz5071... you are what i think is -evil- in this world
thewirrow 5 years ago
It was a bit too pesimisstic for me. Of course we are using energy but who is to say that it is not replacable in some way or another- I agree that we are too focussed on fossil fuels and the petrol heads need a good kicking! According to some leading physicists the universe is expanding faster and faster so eventually all the energy will become too dispersed and all matter will decay into low energy photons. So lets enjoy energy while we have it- but respect the planet at the same time!
daz5071 5 years ago
right.. the song is all about global warming...
i tend to think it has more to do with iraqi children dying and rich white americans profiting from it...
gjk0005 5 years ago
It is interesting to see different perspectives of how the song is interpreted. The brief (from the D&AD awards) suggested the song was about global warming.
"The song is about the environment and you
should certainly consider how to reflect its
messages when thinking about your visuals:
•Time is running out
•No one is doing anything
•We can't endlessly consume"
so that is the path I took.
elev3nuk 5 years ago
I like it. Suits the tone of the song exactly.
