@nowaitbro I'm a recovering addict and you pretty much hit it on the head. As for the second part "That which starts bitter ends sweet," It is terribly hard to quit the drugs.. but life is so much sweeter without them.
@killzone10 i think what johnny is saying is that drugs start sweet and end bitter with death or disease, but it is the beauty they possess which keeps him attached to them. the painting also possesses a visual and psychologically charming beauty, which johnny wants to keep even though the outcome of him keeping it is that his stepfather would kill him. both drugs/cigs and the painting start sweet through beauty and charm, and both have a common outcome, which is death.
hes actually a junkie, and a genius. In the movie that is. Junkie big difference. IT means there less damage done to brain and body and he has a much better chance at getting clean.
@jjheadcharge they are saying that drugs starts sweet but ends bitter and that they are trying to kill you thats why they say about dull black and white smoking kills so they are trying to get a point across a big point
The infamous paradox, the most intelligent and creative of us are usually also the most haunted by personal demons. Mozart, Van Gough, Poe, Hemingway, all geniuses of the first caliber and all haunted by demons that drove them to drink, drugs, suicide and insanity...
This guy or the one who's Thandie Newton's boss that got his lucky painting stolen by Quid would be the perfect Riddler for Nolan's 3rd Batman movie. Quid would also make a good Black Mask or Hush.
Great movie overall but while watching it I still couldn't help asking myself, "Why in the hell is a billionaire transferring millions in cash rather than electronically?"
And especially after he got ripped off the 1st time, why did he do it again?
Still a great movie overall though, even despite that plot weakness.
My favorite scene was Cookie's monologue..."I love that man Johnny, he's what you call class."
...probably because then nobody can see where the money goes to/find the account(s) it went to if there is no electronical account trace. Later on the receiving end might use the money for several bigger acquierements (houses, cars,...) or split it over several accounts so it can't be traced back to where it came from...
because the money is used for illegal stuff. if it would be legal what he is doing, he wouldnt need that gangster idiot and could do everything himself and THEN he would transfer it electronically. easy.
The money wasn't just for the big boss. The seven million was to be used to pay off the right people. It's transferred in cash for that purpose, and so that it doesn't leave a trail.
wot he says is true they make it look amazing the packaging then the boring black and white message the goverment want to keep it cos they make money on tax and other things
i agree with the most of what you say . beside the fact that he hides behind the pleasure of the "smokes and drugs( and also the painting)" rather than give up on which gives him the so called "sweet" per the so called "bitter" he hiding behind what he knows as comfort. rather than what he needs to confront (aka we know who).
That song is like a breath of fresh air in a room full of smoke. It only makes the whole scene more contrasting. This, I think, is Ritchie's best movie yet.
Your other personality is trying to draw your attention to the flip side of the discussion, written in boring bold black and white, it's a statement that these neat little soldiers of death and in fact trying to kill you and that, Pete, is the truth. Oh, beauty is a beguiling call to death and I'm addicted to the sweet pitch of its siren. That that starts sweet ends bitter, and that which starts bitter ends sweet. That is why you and I love the drugs and that is also why I ...
You see that pack of Virginia killing sticks at the end of the piano?
All you need to know about life is retained within those four walls.
You will notice that one of your personalities is seduced by the illusions of grandeur. A "gold" packet of "king" size and with a "regal" insignia. An attractive implication toward glamour and wealth, a subtle suggestion that cigarettes are indeed your "royal" and loyal friends. And that Pete,...is a lie.
Your other personality is trying to draw your attention to the flip side of the discussion. Written in boring, bold, black and white is the statement, that these neat little soldiers of death, are in fact, trying to "kill you." And that Pete,...is the truth.
Beauty is a beguiling call to death and I am addicted to the sweet siren of its pitch. And that,..is why,..you and I love the crack, and that is also why I can not,.. give that painting back.
He said he learned to play Schumann's "Scenes From Childhood" for the film but it wasn't used in the end and I think instead the song is an original for the movie.
He said the fingering is basically the same. "Scenes from Childhood" has many parts though, but none are quite like the film's piece
As much as I Love Rocknrolla, I recently watched trainspotting which came out 2 years before lock stock. It would seem like like Guy borrowed a few stylistic tools from Trainspotting. There is a trip out scene in Trainspotting to a Lout Reed Track and Johnny trips to a Lou Reed song in Rocknrolla.
hes trying to use personification to compare the cigarette packet with real life, for example, on the outside everything always seems fine but on the other side ,everything is not what it seems
In more detail, he's using cigarettes as a metaphor in order to describe his motivation for refusing to give back the painting he stole, and at the same time why they're both junkies, unable to give up the drugs. "Beauty is a beguiling call to death, and I am addicted to the sweet sound of its siren," he says.
He can't give back the painting, or give up the drugs, because he loves the beauty and pleasure they can both bring and that blinds him to the fact that all three might well get him killed
Realest shit ever put in ah film. talking strate sense.
