If the government wants to save family farms they need to do away with the death tax. A family with a couple thousand acres will many times have to sell the farm to pay the tax due when their parents die. All subsidies do is enrich the very large farmers.

I have agreed with this show to this one. Farmers arent all huge like some of these. The farm ground that is valuable is scarce and yes, expensive. Small towns die because the jobs leave. Damn, this show was doing so good until now.

I live in Nebraska and can tell you for a fact that farmers are getting rich as most of the country suffers. Do the math, some corn farmers contracted corn at $7 a bushel. They averaged 200 bushel an acre. One 100 acre farm grossed $140,000. I have friends that farm 2-5 thousand acres. I am trying as hard as I can to buy farm land so that I will get Obamas handout to farmers on top of my $300,000 salary.

You must check out the DVD "King Corn" -- it blows the lid off gov't subsidized industrial corn, which is so genetically engineered, it's inedible -- the farmers won't even eat it. A toxic mixture called high fructose corn syrup is put in EVERYTHING in the grocery store.

Any farm subsidies left over in the bill is used for subsidizing housing in rural areas. Believe it or not you can go to the department of agriculture and get a subsidized mortgage if you meet the requirements. It's a long waiting list but it's there for any one. Rural areas maybe just outside the city or maybe even in it sometimes. They give you a list of counties which are considered rural.
I know farmers who get a WHOLE LOT of money and own airplanes and Hummers! The are not hurting! There should be farm subsidies but they should be "policing" of such. They don't want to call it "welfare" but that's what it is......

The problem with no farm subsidies is that if food prices are low because there's ample food, farms would have to grow more just break even. But if prices are high because there's a scarcity of food they'd have all the leverage to ask for whatever they want and produce even less.

Well, if prices were low why would farmers want to grow even more to break even? When there are low prices you would want to cut back production because your costs would be to high, compared to what you were getting off the sale of your goods. Likewise, when the price is higher you would want to expand and produce more, in order to take advantage of the high prices. By the way there was no free market in the 1930s.

If I am producing 5 shirts/hour and my total costs are $5/hour and the shirts are selling for $6, if you make more shirts won't your costs go up? There is no incentive to produce more because you would be losing profit. Also, what is wrong with market fluctuations? The market is the only vehicle to send proper signals to suppliers and consumers. Government meddling in the market send false signals.

Second, if you make something for $5 and sell it for $6 you don't lose profit--only if it's the other way around. I have agreed with this show to this one. Farmers arent all huge like some of these. The farm ground that is valuable is scarce and yes, expensive. Small towns die because the jobs leave. Damn, this show was doing so good until now.

I live in Nebraska and can tell you for a fact that farmers are getting rich as most of the country suffers. Do the math, some corn farmers contracted corn at $7 a bushel. They averaged 200 bushel an acre. One 100 acre farm grossed $140,000. I have friends that farm 2-5 thousand acres. I am trying as hard as I can to buy farm land so that I will get Obamas handout to farmers on top of my $300,000 salary.

You must check out the DVD "King Corn" -- it blows the lid off gov't subsidized industrial corn, which is so genetically engineered, it's inedible -- the farmers won't even eat it. A toxic mixture called high fructose corn syrup is put in EVERYTHING in the grocery store.
The whole thing is designed to put small farmers growing crops from organic seeds out of business. One might also wonder if it's also supposed to poison and weaken us all by tainting the major food supply...

Any farm subsidies left over in the bill is used for subsidizing housing in rural areas. Believe it or not you can go to the department of agriculture and get a subsidized mortgage if you meet the requirements. It's a long waiting list but it's there for any one. Rural areas maybe just outside the city or maybe even in it sometimes. They give you a list of counties which are considered rural.

The problem with no farm subsidies is that if food prices are low because there's ample food, farms would have to grow more just break even. But if prices are high because there's a scarcity of food they'd have all the leverage to ask for whatever they want and produce even less.
Why do you think the Dust Bowl happened back when farmers were completely at the mercy of the market?

Well, if prices were low why would farmers want to grow even more to break even? When there are low prices you would want to cut back production because your costs would be to high, compared to what you were getting off the sale of your goods. Likewise, when the price is higher you would want to expand and produce more, in order to take advantage of the high prices. By the way there was no free market in the 1930s.

To make ends meet and to not have to go out of business. To be able to buy seed, etc. for the next season. And the more everyone produced the more prices would drop, until unsustainable farming might eventually blow your topsoil away.

Don't producers have to factor in the costs of production before they begin to produce more? If I am producing 5 shirts/hour and my total costs are $5/hour and the shirts are selling for $6, if you make more shirts won't your costs go up? There is no incentive to produce more because you would be losing profit. Also, what is wrong with market fluctuations? The market is the only vehicle to send proper signals to suppliers and consumers. Government meddling in the market send false signals.

Well, in the case of farming what you have to take into account is such finicky factors as the local weather. Second, if you make something for $5 and sell it for $6 you don't lose profit--only if it's the other way around. Third, suggesting that reactivity to extreme market fluctuations is the only possible means of control is like claiming that the only possible means to detect a wall is to run into it.

Ireland did just fine, and in fact was quite prosperous, for a thousand years without a government, and Iceland managed similar prosperity in anarchy for over three hundred years.
