@frilloz4 So do I, but I'm sure you know the likelihood of that. I would gladly jump on the RED scarlet bandwagon if I felt it would make for better filmmakers and encourage different type stories other than the usual Hollywood crap, but unfortunately all I see are people orgasming over a Red trying to do the same garbage.
@vbobkovsky Actually no, I'm more hopeful than not. There will always be bad filmmakers with nothing to say, and there will always be bad films. But damn the resolution will be excellent! It's just my opinion that a lot of people seem to be putting the cart before the horse. Very few ppl displaying their RED footage bother to put it in the context of a story, so to me it might as well be still photography. Then again I'm not watching it on IMAX either so. . . . [shrugs]
@NelsonStJames well this isn't a short film. It's a camera test. It even says so in the title. And don't insult hollywood movies if you can't do better. There are many amazing movies that come out every year.
@xxbluejay21 Like I said, I've seen very little Red footage that isn't a test. I know what the camera can do, I want to see more actual films made with it. And I believe I will be doing better than Hollywood films in the near future because that's where new filmmakers come from. People who think they can do better. Some actually can. We'll just have to see if I'm one or not.
@NelsonStJames The Hobbit, Spider-Man, and many new movies are being shot on the Red Epic and Arri Alexa. David Fincher made two of his last films with the Red Cameras. There's tons more. I seriously doubt that a guy going around criticizing camera test videos could do better.
But what someone considers "better" is purely subjective. Either way, equipment used has very little to do with the finished product. Many indie filmmakers buying up new gear have yet to put out a good film with the great cameras out there now. And we were talking about the indie filmmakers putting up their red tests on you tube, not Hollywood.
@ronineditor This is not a slam - but if you do work in "Hollywood", you know the drill for an indie to get a film, no matter how good the final product is, on the screen. The studios, unions and distribution companies all have contracts with the theaters and set the terms for what films will be made and shown. The true indie, has a better shot at winning the lotto than getting their film shown - though it does happen rarely...very rarely. You're right about the tenacity though, I admire it 2.
@Incivilius I honestly believe the web can change all that. There was a time when there were indie films I only knew about from word of mouth and an article in a magazine. Now I can probably find most of those films on line, or at least a lead to where I can buy them.
Nowadays I seem to find more interesting stuff on you tube and places than the theaters.
Kinda funny how everyone who has purchased a scarlet so far has the same excuse they are working on a feature film that will wind up in theaters??? yea right! Why cant u all admit you bought it for indie work that will never see the darkness of a real movie theater, just an excuse to justify ur guys outrageous personal purchase. Seems funny to me that everyone I have spoken to that has bought or is buying a scarlet has a feature coming out on the big screen lol internet, most of u will only do.
@rbnodvd Wow dude, you fault people for making films for the love of it? You sound absolutely like a bitter filmmaker who couldn't hack it so you take it out on everyone else trying. Yeah, most people won't make it but I give people who try full credit for having the balls to put their work out there, while failure and wannabes sit in the shadows talking shit about them. I work in "Hollywood", the one thing everyone here has in common is that they NEVER gave up.
Wonder how this would look full res, What types of canon lenses can be used on the scarlet, do different types of canon lenses have different crop factors? what would you say is the cheapest configuration + a reasonable set of canon lenses?
@hashemzene The crop factor at 4k is 1.6 so all the lenses that work on a 7D should be fine shooting at 4k. As the res goes down the crop factor goes up so bare that in mind when making your lens choices. For a wide option id go for the Tokina 11-16 with Canon mount and for portrait the CANON 50mm 1.4. Including lenses, a basic package would set you back around $15,000-16,000 but a minimum shooting package could be bought for around $12-13,000 if you decide not to buy some non essential items.
@EnvisageStudio I wouldn't go with standard photo-lenses. There's a good reason for cine lenses to exist. I'd never put a that 120€ 50mm lens on a scarlet. You'd be better off by getting one or two red primes. They are quite reasonably priced for what they offer.
Well on youtube it's nothing to write home about. to us it looked similar to DVX footage. i'm sure on a blue ray dvd it must be great!

you know your skin is fucked up if they do camera tests with it.

Good work. Looks very professional. Now we get a sense of what this camera can do with skin tones.
