@xMeanBean It sure does. I've listened to it on the piano performed by some great pianists and still sounds bad compared when played on the harpsichord. This simply was not meant to be played on the piano, no matter how skillful the pianist is.
Just curious, but what ornamentation did Handel intend for the pianist to improvise? Handel is hard to interpret on the piano since Handel is meant for the harpsichord as oppose to Bach or Scarlatti.
There are a number of different treatises that deal with how to ornament and play the harpsichord "with taste" in the 18th century the most notable of which is "L'Art de toucher le clavecin" ("The Art of Harpsichord Playing", published in 1716), by Francois Couperin. Bach owned a copy of this work and was deeply influenced by it.
Very interesting. I'll have to look at that book. I'm performing the whole suite (by memory most likely) for a pianoforte of mine. I try to play the ornaments ad libitum and add mordents and trills wherever I feel they are appropriate.
Thats fine actually. The two instruments (harpsichord and pianoforte) have different character, and some pieces sound good on one more than the other.
Nice to see your comments again. Great certainly is the best word to describe the Eight Great Suites. Paul Nicholson is such an exemplary harpsichordist.
Well, looks like one more name for my "greatest musicians of all time" list. That makes it 3 names long so far.

I don't like this suite played on a harpsichord. I think that it sounds better on the piano, but that is just my opinion. Great playing anyway.

I just think this piece is overwhelming with the sound of a harpsichord. Just the prelude though.

However, you will rarely, if ever, hear a pianist improvise ornamentation like Handel intended.
