haha the corner had a water spill. He said "get out of this corner quick". Foreman had a knee injury and Mercante Jr is just a boxing fan that hated seeing it ruined like that. Everyones so quick to jump on the wagon. No bias. Cotto never complained. Making something outta nothing here
Well the man did suffer an injury, its the refs jod to make sure both fighters are save. The reason he told Foreman to go the other way was so that he didnt go into the corner which was wet so that he would fall again. I mean yeah you can say "oh the ref is bias" but watever, he didnt want to see a good fighter and a good fight get stopped becuz of his leg, when Foreman wanted to continue
Mercante is a good ref, he does not stop fights, i would want him to ref any of my fights, everybody deserves a chance and boxing is dangerous, everybody knows it, there are some b.s. refs out there that stop the fights too quick or are REALLY biased, like Joe Cortez, watch the fight Maidana vs Khan, he was favoring Khan the whole time, letting him shove, excessively clinch, among other things, while being strict with Maidana and even taking a point from him for an accidental elbow on Cortez ..
wow, that shows that some fights can be biased, even though miguel cotto is a true champ! so is foreman for getting back up and continuing the fight. You can tell it was biased because foreman's corner threw in the towel! The cornerman denied it, but actions speak for themselves. great fight. Both true champions.
Actually refs talking is part of things, when i boxed at amateur level most refs tiped both fighter mid fight. Although they are there to rule and stuff they also enjoy good fights, they are humans after all. I don't think he was biased, but he did give Foreman the chance he deserved cause the injury was not caused by a punche and the champ wanted to continue and defend his belt with honor.
I don't think Mercante was paid, nor was he trying to protect a bet he made. I think he just genuinely felt bad for the kid. It was Foreman's first truly big fight, and he had the misfortune of having to go into it with a totally wrecked knee.
Ref saw what a shitty situation he was in and gave the kid sympathy. His behavior is very odd no doubt, but I don't think it was part of a back-room bribe. He just felt bad.
00:50 is one of the most unprofessional things I've ever seen, though.
Yo is it me, or did anybody else notice that the ref obviously had money on foreman
look at his expressions closely throughout the fight and how even though there was 1 in a trillion chances yuri would win, he insisted the fight go on
not only that but other stuff, like saying awwwww SHIT! when foreman got hurt
N E other ref would of stopped the fight when yuri was wobbling Let alone Throwing in THE FUCKING TOWEL
@MaheM773 Your right mann.. I was saying on the night of the fight that this guy was acting like he had big money on this fight.
I've never seen anything like it. Even at the end of the fight while they were being interviewed he was kissing foremans ass telling him how much of a pleassure it was to work with him like he just reffd ray robinson.
Maybe Yuri fell down purpusely expecting the PAID ref to stop the fight and go to the scorecards since it was all just getting worse and he didnt see himself winning
I understand a ref has to do he's job in protecting each fighter but while watching this fight i deffo thought the ref was biased towards yuri.. i know he was the defending champ but the way he was acting did seem like he favoured yuri over cotto.
That corner was slippery, the referee is there to make sure that fighter doesnt get any major damage and keep the fight FAIR, including they both are million dollar fighters so he has to keep them safe.
Arthur Mercante Jr wasnt biased to Foremans favor- he was motivating Foreman to stay in the fight. If u watch Cotto/Clottey-notice how upset Mercante gets with the unintentional fouls and the slippery canvas. He likes fair fights. And RARELY takes points away.
Mercante Jr killed B.Scotland. A fucking moron who was given everything by his dad. He injured many other boxers and brought them as close as a few punches away from death. He should be fucking fired already.
Looks like another fixed Arum fight to me. I don't think you can get up and fight after your knee gives out. I watched most of Foreman's fights and he never had a problem. If you watch football, when a players knee give out. They always get carried out. I don't think Foreman hurt his knee in this fight. I'm sorry. I think most of this was planned. I even tried to make excuses for the situation but I can't help but see this as being fishy. The corner and ref were even acting funny.
how is this strange or bias this was a big fight in madison square garden he was Mercante was dedicating this fight to his past away father and he just didnt want the fight to end like that
Gets me that with all the scrutiny on the long-term effects of boxing/kickboxing/MMA, that this kind of thing would be dealt with. Instead, it's a non-stop tragedy of errors.
over and over again cotto proves his quality it bothers me that there are always critics and those that continue to test him or even question his ability
he's just a passionate dude, if you look at his reactions in the trinidad and joppy fight and the zab judah and miguel cotto fight thats just how he is really, i don't think its corrupt or anything, if anything at the very most maybe he wants a jew to win?
I'm giving Mercante the benefit of the doubt. He has a shady history, and this was a terrible refereeing job, no doubt, but he could have desperately wanted this to be competitive because of the setting, etc. rather than he had money or responsibility in the outcome.
Anyone else just simply wonder if Mercante, Jr was paid to make sure the kid made it through ok? That maybe Cotto being good and that knee were not part of that evening's originally scheduled programing. I am.
@JoseSilver He told him 2 get outta the corner b/c he assumed that either he was trippin on the photogs or the floor was wet!!!! U dont want fighters slippin on wet shyt. Whether or not it was he had no idea just trying 2 protect both fighters as a good ref should.
hmmm. sounds like mercante jr. wanted foreman to win. to keep him in the fight for so long, and verbally reacting when foreman went down, then instructing foreman to get out of the corner.... is not un-biased refereeing. i'll bet mercante had money on the fight or was following instructions from bob arum (to guide foreman to a win). mercante is pathetic. i hope the commission looks into this. but i doubt they will. the ny commission already let him get away with murder (bee scottland).
I got news for the fool who posted it was ok for Junior to tell Foreman which way to go. BULLSPIT! If there is a wet spot clean it up, you NEVER have a ref do what this bozo did in there, everything he did that night and I mean everything stunk. Break, Break, yeah? Is this the golden gloves, they were not locked up in the first round, go this way not that way, fuck this, shit this, I don't want to see you go out like that. I've seen the Junior show for 20 years, he killed a guy with it .
When I listen to this video it makes me sick to think that absolute incompetents are running the NYSAC who assign this walking fiasco to referee anything anywhere.
Man does this video say it all, and yet there are jock climbing boxing writers who are this guy's friend who let him slide with anything including killing someone with his absolute negligence.
After a ring death, always injuring boxers, posing, grandstanding, and riding his Daddy's coat tails into one pay day after another how much is enough of this political hack being appointed to anything ever again. Why do they let him get away with a ring death and all the rest and keep bringing him back for more embarrassment, who are the fools who keep giving him more chances?
@BoxingChaos13 I cant believe YOUR ignorant comments! And its apparent YOU are the one who doesn't understand boxing! Referees are supposed to be UN-BIASED. They aren't supposed to coach, encourage or tell a fighter which direction to move to when he's getting clobbered on the ropes. If there indeed was water on the canvas, Mercante should have called time and wiped the canvas dry. But he didn't. Obviously you know Mercante, thus your pitiful nut-hugging.
The first part, Awww Huggg! sounds more like Lampey. I know Mercante Jr and Lampey's voices and they sound nothing alike. Fail #1. The reason Mercante is telling Foreman to move and go the other was is because the corner is wet. He did the right thing by trying to keep Foreman out of the wet spot of that corner. Mercante Jr is not a run of the mill referee and this is why a lot of people like him because he is different. Both he and his father are good. RIP Arthur Mercante Sr.
@Creativasgroup - Tell me about it! As MTBB and others have mentioned, apart from the bout in question, he was involved in several other fights that had chilling outcomes.
@JoseSilver Like his father Mercante Jr. is unproffesional, an egomaniac, and a superstar in his own head... He loves to yell, and prance around the ring as if he were the attraction........I hope the comission takes the time to look into this actions in this fight.
@MenTakeBubbleBaths yeah I have to agree with you. He didn't start refing yesterday, so he has no reason to be acting that way unless under the suspects you state. this world is getting pretty fked up huh? LOL. I remember when I was a young kid... I sent this kid to the ropes with a right hand, and I pitter pattered his head, waiting for the ref to give him the 8 count. Ref and I just looked at each other. He wouldn't count until I threw another hard punch. wouldn't say sht Lost my first fight.
The ref isn't allowed to give the fighter any advice, plain and simple.
It doesn't matter if he was disappointed with what happened to Yuri. The referee is supposed to conduct himself like a pro.
Foreman's hurt leg didn't even slip on the paint (like what happened to Dirrell), he injured himself and it wasn't related to the canvas paint or Cotto accidentally fouling him.
Prior to the main event, Mercante knew the ring was wet and slippery and asked for it to be wiped down thoroughly. It wasn't. When Foreman slipped and injured himself, Mercante was visbly upset because he knew the wet logo on the canvas was responsible. Later, when he was telling Foreman which way to move, it was to keep him from slipping once again on the logo in the corner. Mercante was looking out for Foreman's safety and was not acting dishonestly, whether you agree with his actions or not.
Fuck me i havent got to see this fight as it wasnt shown over here in the u.k but thats some seriously corrupt looking refereeing to me!Wtf!How can someone get away with something as obvious as that?!
@BoxingBadBoy77 - I think he has political connections (Mercante Sr legacy, etc) because he has been involved in so many other terrible fiasco's it's not true.
@MenTakeBubbleBaths I think I said that in my vid or on Blogtv. That fall looked horrible and I was almost positive it was an ACL. If that brace wasn't there he might not have any knee left at all. Personally, I thought Yuri hurt his knee early on in the 2nd round. Look at it again and see how dodgy that knee was.
@MenTakeBubbleBaths your right. They're not supposed to interfere like that. Now, showing compassion and stopping the fight when Yuri went down the first time to prevent further injury would have been OK.
@MenTakeBubbleBaths alright i agree telling him which way to go was stupid. but just cause he was showing disappointment when yuri was going down doesnt mean shit. what if he was upset because he might have to stop the fight and disappoint a bunch of people who paid to go see this fight? i dont remember him acting bias before the accident. i think you just want to be a little conspiracy theorist with your girlfriend josesilver
@MenTakeBubbleBaths - I could'nt agree more man. You hit the nail on the head with regard to Mercante's bias. As well as yelling encouragement and advice to Yuri, he is almost trying to "Shepherd" him to safety, that is the most shocking part for me!!? As you say, Ref's in the past have been punished or suspended for similar behaviour. I hope Cotto watches the fight and lodges a complaint, because, like Joe Cortez, Mercante has the potential to interfere+completely alter the pattern of a fight!!
@JoseSilver I also agree! Mercante was out of order and i also hope Cotto makes a complaint, because if it's not addressed now then he could go on rip off other fighters. Cortez has been able to get away with a few times, look at the Soto-Lorenzo, Mayweather-Hatton and the Calzaghe-Hopkins fights. Firm but fair my arse, firm and biased more like!!
@MenTakeBubbleBaths I don't think it may be that, although it may be a possibility. Arthur Mercante is son of a great legendary referee who courted a lot of Ali's fights, including the last one in Yankee Stadium. This fight meant a lot to him. He wanted to look great like his pops. It would be piss poor if the fight would end early due to some dumb knee injury. He did well I think.
you guys are a bunch of dumbass wannabe boxing fans. maybe the ref cares about boxing and didnt want to turn casual fans off the sport. imagine how pissed you would be if you paid all that money for tickets and the fight is stopped because of a freak injury. i dont think hes swearing because hes rooting for foreman i think hes worried about having to stop the fight
Not to bust the bubble, but he does the same thing in the Cotto Clottey fight when Clootey either gets slammed or gets hit behind the head...hey say something...like your not going o put this on me...and Oohh shit, Mercante has never been bogus or his dad, and I'm the biggest Cotto fan, u cant buy this guy, just like Smogger or Cortes!
The end was even more hilarious, it was like watching a circus act. I remember hearing the ref say to Foreman ‘’ I’m not going to have you go out like that’’. It was inevitable that Cotto was going to win. He made it known he was not going to be the ‘’fallguy’’ for anybody.
While watching the live fight I totally missed the fine details of the ref’s reaction to Foreman’s mishaps during the pivotal rounds. On reflection this is totally out of order and unfair to both fighters moreover, the sport of boxing. This man made no bones about his vested interest in foreman to win.
My question is: Did they know Foreman was injured before the fight and tried to pass it off? Just being a devil's advocate here. You can look at it either way. OR he could just be reacting to watching a dudes knee getting bent in half in an unnatual motion. I know I was like "Holy Sh*t!" when Yuri went down the first time.
@BxDominiRican718 yea i was wit Cotto to win too but im jus sayin the way the fight was goin especially in the refs part it looked like a robbery was gonna happen
if u r in there and u r listening to the ref on advice to fight u r fucked cuz hes a ref not a trainer or fighter wtf does he know anyway he needed more help cuz cotto smashed him up ez
@MenTakeBubbleBaths - Yep Bro, you are right, at best, this looks like Mercante has money on Foreman!!? At worst, he was being leaned on to move "Heaven and Earth" for Foreman. Either way, Mercante should never be allowed anywhere near a world title fight again!
Just wonder, if Cotto had slipped, would he have shown so much concern and support??
@JessiJackalope - Yes, bizarre is the word. Just surprised that he behaved in such a "pro Foreman" way. I like Yuri, but you're right, Cotto out-boxed and out-muscled him for the majority of the first half of the fight! Just hope Cotto fights once or twice more and gets out with his health and wealth intact.
@utterfreecreations - Thanks for the comment man. Yes, Yuri certainly showed courage above and beyond the likes of a few other fighters I can remember!
haha the corner had a water spill. He said "get out of this corner quick". Foreman had a knee injury and Mercante Jr is just a boxing fan that hated seeing it ruined like that. Everyones so quick to jump on the wagon. No bias. Cotto never complained. Making something outta nothing here

BoxingBadBoy77 1 year ago
@BoxingBadBoy77 - I think he has political connections (Mercante Sr legacy, etc) because he has been involved in so many other terrible fiasco's it's not true.

@MenTakeBubbleBaths I think I said that in my vid or on Blogtv. That fall looked horrible and I was almost positive it was an ACL. If that brace wasn't there he might not have any knee left at all. Personally, I thought Yuri hurt his knee early on in the 2nd round. Look at it again and see how dodgy that knee was.
bigragu 1 year ago
@MenTakeBubbleBaths your right. They're not supposed to interfere like that. Now, showing compassion and stopping the fight when Yuri went down the first time to prevent further injury would have been OK.
bigragu 1 year ago

JoseSilver 1 year ago

Ruthless187G 1 year ago

This man made no bones about his vested interest in foreman to win.
sensualsusan 1 year ago
My question is: Did they know Foreman was injured before the fight and tried to pass it off? Just being a devil's advocate here. You can look at it either way. OR he could just be reacting to watching a dudes knee getting bent in half in an unnatual motion. I know I was like "Holy Sh*t!" when Yuri went down the first time.

yea i thought if foreman survived the fight he would win a controversial decision. referee looked very suspicious knew it wasnt just me
BoxingSmurf320 1 year ago
@BoxingSmurf320 WRONG,foreman was getting his behind kicked! out of all rounds he won 1.
BxDominiRican718 1 year ago

Take it easy.
JoseSilver 1 year ago
@JessiJackalope - Yes, bizarre is the word. Just surprised that he behaved in such a "pro Foreman" way. I like Yuri, but you're right, Cotto out-boxed and out-muscled him for the majority of the first half of the fight! Just hope Cotto fights once or twice more and gets out with his health and wealth intact.
Mercante Jr was farcical though!

@utterfreecreations - Thanks for the comment man. Yes, Yuri certainly showed courage above and beyond the likes of a few other fighters I can remember!
