I respect the hell out of Cantrell's feel on the guitar (riffs, licks, solos) personality, & body of work as an artist (lyrically, vocally, musically, perseverance)... From simplicity to complexity he nails it all. One underrated aspect of his work is the dimension some of his additional 'fills' add to the whole on most of the songs. If you have ever studied every guitar noise on an album, each little bend behind verse riffs, fills leading into a chorus, etc...you know what I'm talking about.
Its funny that two totally different tunes can come outta the same chord progession. The chords hes playing for man in a box in the beginning of this video sound very similar to check my brains chord progression. Cantrell rocks
shredders are often best when used in conjunction with a solid rhythm writer. Hetfield/Hammett, Mustaine/friedman or Mustaine/Broderick. The problem is when you get a shred style guitarist that doesn't really know how to write music outside of notes in rapid order. Soloist Like Satriani are hard to find.
Cantrell speaks the truth....the solo to "Nutshell" is a perfect example of the simplest little solo sounding like nothing else would ever fit there. That solo is so emotional....yet so basic....he is one of the best ever at making the most elementary note selection sound fresh and complex...you don't have to re-define tapping or get all innovative to make great music.
I have been trying to tell my step brother that it is not all about technical abilities as we both play guitar. He is just all into playing all fast as humanly possible and mixing every variation of technical skills (sweep picking, tapping, etc..). I on the other hand am more focused in rhythm and making actual songs. I do love metallica and I agree with Cantrell that James Hetfield is an amazing rhythm guitarist. To me soul and emotion far outweigh technical abilities.
Closest you'll get without having a $2,300 Bogner Shiva is to get the AMT B1 pedal..its a Bogner preamp in a stompbox basically. $129 bucks, goes into the 'return' of your effects loop. I used the pedal on one of my amp heads..it has Jerry's tone AND response written all over it, right down to the 'clanking'. I didn't want to cop his tone completely so I got rid of it, but its nice to use jerry's tone as a reference to creating my own (he uses a good amount of mids, typical of late 80's players)
@RNRDOLL I can tell you know what you're talking about, I just started playing a year ago, but I have always wondered how he gets that sound, he is fucking amazing, I have all of their studio recordings, and I can't believe the sound he creates, so his playing has to do with alot of effects? I am a big fan of AIC, and Cantrell's, he is the reason I want to get good, I only play unplugged right now, am practicing four hours a day every day though,
he gets that sound with over 10 thousand dollar gear xD its not the effects just the equipment he uses which is bogner an amp of those costs 5000 thousand dollars xD
you can check his rack and what he uses live here on youtube .
@Spartann666 Thanks, I won't be affording that kind of equipment anytime soon, besides that I would never want to copy Jerry, he's one of a kind, just wondering how he does that.
With the right guitar (make sure it has at least decent sustain and that the strings don't buzz) + a great amp you're halfway there. There's a few pedals that can get you a tone similar to his, but apparently his guitar tech mentioned Jerry's noise gate (I think he uses ISP Decimators) as being the most important one by far
Since my amp doesn't have a fantastic gain channel I rely on my Emma Reezafratzitz. It sounds so much better than those cheap distortion pedals with "Metal" in their title
i agree Jerry, along with The rest of Alice is fucking awesome. U dnt have to play a thousand notes per min. its all about emotion and feel and jerry has it
I still love these vids! And after seeing Jerry C and AIC in WV in 2010, they STILL got it! And it's becouse of HIM! Jerry IS AIC!!!!!!

I can't tell, what's the last chord of the chorus? I've been playing it as an A chord, but it doesn't look or sound like an A when he does it.

Seeing him play Would? solo like that reminds me how important drums are in a song and how important Sean Kinney's drumming is to this band's music.

I'd rather listen to 30 seconds of Jerry's playing than a whole album by a "shredder".
