for those whom don't realize, he is walking on the wet tile to tell viewers that that is his way out, as well as that he is not tiling himself in because he is showing how he plans to get out.
@davidtheatheist various different ways of setting out, depending on size of room/floor. A small room like that id ping a line lengthways, center the room, work out max tile cuts to the edges inc doors etc then start 1/2 courses from the back of the room and work out. Keep to your line and you shouldent go wrong. Remember, not all tiles are of equal size sometimes.
if you measure your area you do not have to start in center of room to know what your cuts are going to be try using a free program called tile gem it calculates everything including your cuts any way you want to lay tile... I just did a quick check for a tile calculator and it works great cut my time way down in my design and layout told me exactly how many cuts and where my placement would be as have odd layout on my floors ... tiling my kitchen now and three bathrooms prepped and ready togo..

as a tile setter- the ultimate disrespect is to have someone walk over the wet tiles before they have set up. one job I did the owners- man and wife- they walked into the bathroom over the wet tiles i had just put in. I lost it brother!- i started to cuss and swore a blue streak in their direction. they cleared out fast- i had to reset a few tiles- the job looked great - I got paid , but I think I scared the wife. they never called me back for other work, but don't walk on my wet tiles!!!
@larrywheels LOL. They may not have called you back, but if it didn't work out because they screwed it up, they would have. Maybe let the people you work for know in advance what not to do, This will save you, and them aggravation. I would have done what you did. lol
@larrywheels I fell in love with you a little bit when I read this comment. I had a guy retile a large room in my home once and do a really shit job. I have since developed a great respect for a man who takes pride in his work. I would never walk on your wet tiles. XOXOXO
@JusDuckie thanks your comment- the image of two people just casually walking into a bathroom i had just tiled -as if they were on a little stroll in the park. just finished one year straight of laying floors, gotta rest my knees. this kinda work sure is physical. on my way to vegas to spend all the money i made.
Wow, this customer got screwed..as everyone said, NEVER walk on newly set tile, and always use spacers. Snapping a line or using a laser is useless since most walls/base aren't straight to begin with. But no one mentioned that the guy didn't start at the doorway ! Unless tile is set on diagonal ( then you find middle & start there ) you always set your 1st tile center of threashold where its seen & work your way back..this idiot is working himself into a corner...of course he'll walk his way out
Professional tile installers don't use spacers. Once you mark your floor, snap your lines with the chalk line, make sure the floor is solid, then you're ready to lay. Its sad to see all these youtube video clips recommending people to use them. The majority of the tiles today are Made In China and they are awful. Many tiles are thicker/thinner, 1/16th + bigger/smaller etc.. Plus who would want huge ass grout joints in their home? The small the better.
@demetriosns I agree with the small grout joints except when you are setting saltillo tile ;) Then I like to go with a 1/2" joint....... This guy probably isn't a professional though....at least I hope not!
sometimes with large format tile it almost takes your full body weight to force a tile into the thinset that may be sitting proud. but its not a great idea to walk on tile.
funny thing is though, ill bet that after the job was finished, nobody could ever tell the guy was walking on the tile.
Listen. This is a comedic take on tiling a floor. He's not really stepping on the tiles to bed them in. Anyone who thinks this is a serious video is seriously fuckin wank.

Odd question here - who puts ceramic tile in a bedroom? I agree with some of you here - I've pulled ceramic, sheet vinyl and vinyl tile off of lots of substrates and most were the reason the tile job failed. I have yet to see carpet under tile yet. Kitchen I'm doing now was originally red oak t&g then geniuses put 1/8" sheet vinyl (squishy stuff from the early 70's) right over that then later someone put sheet reg vinyl over that then last they put 1/4" luan over that and more sheet vinyl. PITA!
@rhblakeman Haha, I've had a lot of (not to be stereotyping or anything) old Asian men buy tiles for bedrooms. I can't seem to understand why. People have effed up thoughts about not ripping up flooring underneath, and ALL IS SOLVED by putting new subfloor on top (not!). It's really quite irritating. Do the job right the first time... :P I would be terrified the day I see carpet under tiles. Although I've had people wanting to use carpet as laminate under pad. I was not amused...
I hate when customers want to go right over the top of VCT tile and I stick my fingernail under the vct and pull it up (you cannot stick to what is not stuck) they don't want to pay for demo of old tile.
(Above) Im not going to say I never stepped on a piece of tile to make it go down but this is ridiculous.
Just kidding, The comment was for a friend that got really lazy at an asshole customer's house and tiled right over the carpet on a stair riser. What's even more funny is that it worked!
seriously? you can tile over anything...if you don't ever want to walk on it. you tile over carpet, and prolly the first thing that will happen is you'll either shatter the tile or crumble the mortar and all the tiles come loose...concrete floors or cemet board...don't be lazy, do the tear out
haha, clearly every post on here is an old guy!!! Dont use spacers....??? If you are doing commercial work then you shouldn't use them but map out 4x4 grid chalk line and spray over with clear spray paint!! Anything else reguardless of quality and squarness needs spacers, even with spacers you have a little "fudge" room because they are rubbery!! As far as the dude standing on them, I don't completely disagree but a firm push down with arms should be enough!!!
whats funny you´ll be an "old" guy one day r.spraying with lacker can be a waste of time if the floor area has light foot traffic.grid sizes can be whatever depending on what the tiler is comfitable with and the jobs layout but all reference measurements are taken from the initial cross line.you have different size notched trowels for a reason to have some play in any uneveness in the substrate, why apply unnessacery pressure?.if your fudging the joint sizes with spacers why use them at all?.
@Kreggsy6 What's even funnier is us "old guys" have been doing tile and other things longer than you've been breathing air. Spacers are another way someone can sell more stuff to consumers who don't have an eye for spacing, or a couple sticks of wood made up to check spacing. Lacquer over the chalk? Why? Only lines needed are start lines. I have to go with you on the standing though - firm push down is all it needs or it gets squished out, and becomes too thin to hold.
Contrary to cool guy belief...tile spacers are a must. Unless its a large footage or a pattern with multiple sizes that need to interlock good, use ur damn spacers! I'm a good tile installer and there is a HUGE difference between tile setting and tile slamming. It takes an extremely good eye to ever have the talent it takes to wing it like like a pro. So trust me, consistency matters. Go to lowes and get the Tavy spacers. They are wonderful for a good layout with a GOOD tile.
what are you on about?.pros don´t "wing it"the job is set out and executed without the use of spacers because we have many years experience, if your talented those years are less
The grid method for the"wing it" comment. Experienced people can accurately snap chalk lines and place the tile within very tight spacing as long as their lines and especially their eye are good. Seeing how tile can be out of square and inconsistent from one to the next, "wing it" is all you have left to do. And yes, my years of experience took far less than most. I have tile store saleswomen of 20 years dazzled at the art form I instill in my tile work. So f*ck yer couch!
now then, there was no need to get abusive.i was pointing out that a tiler dosn´t walk on to a job and start laying ties willy nilly without giving careful consideration to the finished job.yes tiles are invariably out of square thats why i don´t and never have used spacers on floor work.set the job out correctly and i´m not talking small grids a squared cross line is sufficient.if your so good why are you using spacers?.
You know, I went to work feeling bad I took it to that level, so my apologies. So in a rare occasion on the internet, I'd like to apologize. But my first point should be clarified better. The average diy person can barely be trusted with a hammer. Most people don't possess the skill sets to do tile well to begin with. So encouraging them to not use spacers is just mad. I work in residential were I have people nitpicking every sq inch. So spacers are a must for me. And Tavy Spacers FN rock!
For the spacer questions: Many tiles are not perfectly dimensioned. Professional tile installers will finely adjust floor tile spacing in order to avoid cumulative error as tiles are placed. Spacers are used on walls in order to support the weight of the tile as the thin set dries.
@SaM5246iPhone using a chalkline on the floor before putting the cement down. You measure a few tiles together with the desired grout joint and run a chalkline with that measurement. This ensures that your grout joints are always straight. Tiles aren't always the same size so using spacers would ruin your grout joints.
@relax142 Excuse my ignorance, but why is that? I'm a novice and about to do some tiling on my kitchen floor and plan to use spacers to help me get it all even.
@Rustystone27 Spacers are exactly the same size made at a factory by a machine. The tiles are made on a machine also but due to them being cooked and dried, they don't always come out the same size. So what happens is over a run of a few tiles, you start to get huge differences within your grout joints due to the different size tiles. If you use a chalkline on the floor as a guide you'll have an easier time keeping the grout lines straight
I am a commercial tile installer malls, airports etc. this dude doesn't know shit.Never walk on wet tile there's notches in the trowel for a reason, spread a whole row of mud evenly don't cover your chalk line, and always
stay on the line!! drop the tile in place and adjust as you go,keep the joints clean wile the mud is still wet for a nice grout job,and only if you suck or have never laid tile don't use spacers on a floor, only walls a good eye and a chalk line is all you need.this guy sucks!!!
nice to see someone who knows what he´s talking about.ever noticed no matter how many signs/barriers put up someone always walks over the fresh work on the big jobs.
@nickmendezrico its amazing some of the new digital gadgets you can get for home improvement, my favorite is a laser "measuring tape" that my girlfriends office uses for measurements when drafting, its $700 but a fun tool to use.
@emutiny I've been doing construction for 15 years and I'm always looking for ways to improve the end result and cut time at the same time if you ever have used lasers you'd know how useful they are in laying out almost anything, as a matter of fact I own about 7 or 8 different lasers and I can tell you first hand there's no easier way to lay tile, I used to use chalk lines back in the 90's, but once I found Lasers that's all I use for almost anything that requires level, plumb or square.
@dravetaz1 ...But that's the point (poor workmanship) of this video, dravetaz1; that's why it's titled "How NOT to Lay Tile." But I think they should have written it on the screen as the guy works to drive home the message, 'cause folks may watch him w/o absorbing the title, and his ill-advised actions may stick in their minds and then eventually get mimicked when they're laying tiles themselves....
@dravetaz1 PS ALWAYS use spacers, because most light (natural or otherwise; inside or outside) is unevenly distributed, and therefore, perspective and symmetry often become a tricky business.... And in a situation where even the slightest error is cumulative (and sometimes even exponential!), using spacers for all tiling is absolutely a GOLDEN RULE. (And if you don't have them, postpone the job until you do!!!) Just remember that you heard it here.... :o)
@mmdillon1 The Spacers are a huge debatable thing when it comes to floors. Some tiles are manufactured the best they can, but some tiles can be ie: 12 x 12, but then the same tile could be 11 3/4" x 11 3/4", which is a common occurrence. I've actually had problems with customers where they have to eye it over using the spacers because it throws their tiles off. I'd say it's a go if you know your tiles are square (heck, I use them when I can)...but you gotta watch your tiles....!! =]
@dravetaz1 i have a question for you. I have plastic tiles on my bathroom floor that are loose from moisture and water from the shower. they curve up. can i fix them to where they lay flat again and stick flat?
@dravetaz1 hay mate i am about to tile my out side patio area it is already paved. i have gone around the hole area and hit them all with a ballet and they are all bedded in there perfect.no movement at all.... would that be fine to pour a bed over the top of that or would you rip it all up... and redo a slab..????
@dravetaz1 You don't eyeball anything, you use straight edges and grids to keep alignment or otherwise you get curves in the floor. Nothing wrong with using spacers or shims in combination with tape to control how the tile will lay down.
Really all tile and stone should be laid over a mud bed and i don't mean thinset.
@dravetaz1 could be that he's laid a medium bed of mortar and he wants 100% coverage? ...one theory anyways... you can always detail the grout joints next morning with a vinyl scraping tool or a sharp utility blade? ... as long as his underlayment is sound, who are we to judge?
no i think what this video is trying to say, is that the thing wrong here is that the guy doesnt start tiling from the centre of the room, which you should, so you have cut tiles on the edges not the middle of the room.
You always remove spacers! They are used in a tombstone position!!!! You people who try and do shit like this make my life way to complicated!!! Leave it to a professional please!!!!!! Spacers will make the tiles "pop" ha! someone should "pop"NBEVAN one right in the schluter!!!
Obviously STACKSBUNDLES12 is one of these "I'm a tough guy on the net" type of blokes. If ever your in the uk feel free to let me know when & where so u can "Pop me in the schluter!" (Obviously a French/Canadian word) Like I said. Everyone works differently, But i suppose being french means you are correct!
j.duncan has it right.correct measuring,a square or the 3 4 5 method for large areas.also i work a lot with wet rooms where there`s a fall in to the drain.spacers simply wouldn`t work.a good eye and exp. is needed for a fast proff job.
yes because so much skill goes into putting squares on a floor with little spacers between and makin sure your bubble on your level is in the middle must be all sorts of secrets to this trade i mean seriously is it rocket science?
It actually is a fine art. I know countless people who are skilled in many areas and suck at tile. Any idiot can do straight tile. But try diagonal or a rug inlay. Ur a dipsh*t. Swallow ur tongue in ur sleep and do us all a favor.
i never use spacers. ceramic tile can vary slightly from one tile to the next. i have had it happen before. it is not much fun trying to straighten them back out. you should grid out your floor with a chalk line. you will never have a problem again.
Noticed people saying " Dont use spacers",....... spacers are to keep your joints in line , you dont have to but your joints will stager and your tiling will look kack!
Youtube sure is a mixed bag of good, bad and ugly... NOTHING good about this one. I have never seen anyone walk on the tile they are setting during the process. SO I'll rack this one as comic relief, with the knowledge that no matter how bad I screw up I can go back and review this and feel good. Thanks for posting this. Where is Larry, Curly, and Moe?
Grats on setting your floor out leaving a shit cut near the door, and what's with walking on the tiles if you need to adjust them or pat them don a little in one corner get a mallet
spacers might be perfect but most tiles are not also floors can dip and rise this is where you need experience to adjust gradually to the regular joe soap all the spacers in china wont garuntee a nice finish
DO not install tile like this, You should never walk on your tiles when the thinset is wet.
You should lay your tile on the thinset and with a long level and hands to level the tile with the others and I always use spacers even though people say a good tile layer should not but no one can be as perfect as spacers.
Never lay spacers flat in the corners but vertical 2 per edge of the tile depending on tile size.
Spread thinset on the back of the tiles as well as floor to ensure proper bonding.
hahaha I'll have to try that metod next time im doing rectified floors :-)

@Kreggsy6 What's even funnier is us "old guys" have been doing tile and other things longer than you've been breathing air. Spacers are another way someone can sell more stuff to consumers who don't have an eye for spacing, or a couple sticks of wood made up to check spacing. Lacquer over the chalk? Why? Only lines needed are start lines. I have to go with you on the standing though - firm push down is all it needs or it gets squished out, and becomes too thin to hold.
rhblakeman 1 year ago
Contrary to cool guy belief...tile spacers are a must. Unless its a large footage or a pattern with multiple sizes that need to interlock good, use ur damn spacers! I'm a good tile installer and there is a HUGE difference between tile setting and tile slamming. It takes an extremely good eye to ever have the talent it takes to wing it like like a pro. So trust me, consistency matters. Go to lowes and get the Tavy spacers. They are wonderful for a good layout with a GOOD tile.
stubbadub81 2 years ago
what are you on about?.pros don´t "wing it"the job is set out and executed without the use of spacers because we have many years experience, if your talented those years are less
stilln68la 2 years ago
The grid method for the"wing it" comment. Experienced people can accurately snap chalk lines and place the tile within very tight spacing as long as their lines and especially their eye are good. Seeing how tile can be out of square and inconsistent from one to the next, "wing it" is all you have left to do. And yes, my years of experience took far less than most. I have tile store saleswomen of 20 years dazzled at the art form I instill in my tile work. So f*ck yer couch!
stubbadub81 2 years ago
now then, there was no need to get abusive.i was pointing out that a tiler dosn´t walk on to a job and start laying ties willy nilly without giving careful consideration to the finished job.yes tiles are invariably out of square thats why i don´t and never have used spacers on floor work.set the job out correctly and i´m not talking small grids a squared cross line is sufficient.if your so good why are you using spacers?.
stilln68la 2 years ago
You know, I went to work feeling bad I took it to that level, so my apologies. So in a rare occasion on the internet, I'd like to apologize. But my first point should be clarified better. The average diy person can barely be trusted with a hammer. Most people don't possess the skill sets to do tile well to begin with. So encouraging them to not use spacers is just mad. I work in residential were I have people nitpicking every sq inch. So spacers are a must for me. And Tavy Spacers FN rock!

you felt bad for shit talkin on the internet?!?! noob...
eatmytool1 2 years ago
How would using spacers hurt? Maybe it adds a little more time but other than that I don't see anything wrong with it.
WatchingStuffIsGood 2 years ago
For the spacer questions: Many tiles are not perfectly dimensioned. Professional tile installers will finely adjust floor tile spacing in order to avoid cumulative error as tiles are placed. Spacers are used on walls in order to support the weight of the tile as the thin set dries.
DavesTreeFarm 2 years ago 21
@DavesTreeFarm Never, ever, ever use spacers...not even on a wall. If you see your tiler using spacers kick him out of your house.
relax142 4 months ago
@relax142
how does a professional get the right spacing in the tiles if not using spacers?
SaM5246iPhone 3 months ago
@SaM5246iPhone using a chalkline on the floor before putting the cement down. You measure a few tiles together with the desired grout joint and run a chalkline with that measurement. This ensures that your grout joints are always straight. Tiles aren't always the same size so using spacers would ruin your grout joints.
relax142 3 months ago
@relax142
thanks for the reply I never knew that!
SaM5246iPhone 3 months ago
@relax142 Excuse my ignorance, but why is that? I'm a novice and about to do some tiling on my kitchen floor and plan to use spacers to help me get it all even.
Rustystone27 3 months ago
@Rustystone27 Spacers are exactly the same size made at a factory by a machine. The tiles are made on a machine also but due to them being cooked and dried, they don't always come out the same size. So what happens is over a run of a few tiles, you start to get huge differences within your grout joints due to the different size tiles. If you use a chalkline on the floor as a guide you'll have an easier time keeping the grout lines straight
relax142 3 months ago
I am a commercial tile installer malls, airports etc. this dude doesn't know shit.Never walk on wet tile there's notches in the trowel for a reason, spread a whole row of mud evenly don't cover your chalk line, and always
stay on the line!! drop the tile in place and adjust as you go,keep the joints clean wile the mud is still wet for a nice grout job,and only if you suck or have never laid tile don't use spacers on a floor, only walls a good eye and a chalk line is all you need.this guy sucks!!!

nickmendezrico 1 year ago
@nickmendezrico its amazing some of the new digital gadgets you can get for home improvement, my favorite is a laser "measuring tape" that my girlfriends office uses for measurements when drafting, its $700 but a fun tool to use.
Acidburn24 1 year ago
@nickmendezrico do u work in construction or are you just a weekend warrior who thinks lasers are cool?
emutiny 1 year ago
@emutiny I've been doing construction for 15 years and I'm always looking for ways to improve the end result and cut time at the same time if you ever have used lasers you'd know how useful they are in laying out almost anything, as a matter of fact I own about 7 or 8 different lasers and I can tell you first hand there's no easier way to lay tile, I used to use chalk lines back in the 90's, but once I found Lasers that's all I use for almost anything that requires level, plumb or square.
nickmendezrico 1 year ago
@dravetaz1 ...But that's the point (poor workmanship) of this video, dravetaz1; that's why it's titled "How NOT to Lay Tile." But I think they should have written it on the screen as the guy works to drive home the message, 'cause folks may watch him w/o absorbing the title, and his ill-advised actions may stick in their minds and then eventually get mimicked when they're laying tiles themselves....
mmdillon1 1 year ago
@dravetaz1 PS ALWAYS use spacers, because most light (natural or otherwise; inside or outside) is unevenly distributed, and therefore, perspective and symmetry often become a tricky business.... And in a situation where even the slightest error is cumulative (and sometimes even exponential!), using spacers for all tiling is absolutely a GOLDEN RULE. (And if you don't have them, postpone the job until you do!!!) Just remember that you heard it here.... :o)
mmdillon1 1 year ago
@mmdillon1 The Spacers are a huge debatable thing when it comes to floors. Some tiles are manufactured the best they can, but some tiles can be ie: 12 x 12, but then the same tile could be 11 3/4" x 11 3/4", which is a common occurrence. I've actually had problems with customers where they have to eye it over using the spacers because it throws their tiles off. I'd say it's a go if you know your tiles are square (heck, I use them when I can)...but you gotta watch your tiles....!! =]
cheeseboxproductions 1 year ago
@dravetaz1 i have a question for you. I have plastic tiles on my bathroom floor that are loose from moisture and water from the shower. they curve up. can i fix them to where they lay flat again and stick flat?
Brettwbeyer14 1 year ago
@dravetaz1 hay mate i am about to tile my out side patio area it is already paved. i have gone around the hole area and hit them all with a ballet and they are all bedded in there perfect.no movement at all.... would that be fine to pour a bed over the top of that or would you rip it all up... and redo a slab..????
mutto21 1 year ago
@dravetaz1 You don't eyeball anything, you use straight edges and grids to keep alignment or otherwise you get curves in the floor. Nothing wrong with using spacers or shims in combination with tape to control how the tile will lay down.
Really all tile and stone should be laid over a mud bed and i don't mean thinset.

@dravetaz1 could be that he's laid a medium bed of mortar and he wants 100% coverage? ...one theory anyways... you can always detail the grout joints next morning with a vinyl scraping tool or a sharp utility blade? ... as long as his underlayment is sound, who are we to judge?
handymandan100 7 months ago
no i think what this video is trying to say, is that the thing wrong here is that the guy doesnt start tiling from the centre of the room, which you should, so you have cut tiles on the edges not the middle of the room.

On wooden floors i remove the spacers before i grout.
I do this because The wood is flexible.
After using flex adhesive & grout what's the point in leavin hard plastic spacers in?
If there is any movement the spacers will just make the tiles "pop" as the tiles have restricted movement.
Obviously everyone works different and have different ways of doin thing's. This is just one of my ways.
NBEVAN 2 years ago
You always remove spacers! They are used in a tombstone position!!!! You people who try and do shit like this make my life way to complicated!!! Leave it to a professional please!!!!!! Spacers will make the tiles "pop" ha! someone should "pop"NBEVAN one right in the schluter!!!

Want to learn how to install ceramic tile the correct way or learn proper techniques then buy the " Ceramic Tile Institue Book of America CTIOA".
Most tile layers learned from other installers with no knowledge of how to properly install ceramic tile.
Most ceramic tile installers are like computers: garbage in / garbage out.
Study, Learn, and Apply Techniques.

yes because so much skill goes into putting squares on a floor with little spacers between and makin sure your bubble on your level is in the middle must be all sorts of secrets to this trade i mean seriously is it rocket science?

It actually is a fine art. I know countless people who are skilled in many areas and suck at tile. Any idiot can do straight tile. But try diagonal or a rug inlay. Ur a dipsh*t. Swallow ur tongue in ur sleep and do us all a favor.

Not on floors pal! wall tiles yes because they are more precise in size but on floor they can be sizey!
gozzygosden 3 years ago 4
i never use spacers. ceramic tile can vary slightly from one tile to the next. i have had it happen before. it is not much fun trying to straighten them back out. you should grid out your floor with a chalk line. you will never have a problem again.
jimduncan69 3 years ago
Noticed people saying " Dont use spacers",....... spacers are to keep your joints in line , you dont have to but your joints will stager and your tiling will look kack!

Watching some guy lay a few tiles is not How to Lay Tile as the title suggests. No info here
celluloidvoyer 3 years ago
DO not install tile like this, You should never walk on your tiles when the thinset is wet.
You should lay your tile on the thinset and with a long level and hands to level the tile with the others and I always use spacers even though people say a good tile layer should not but no one can be as perfect as spacers.
Never lay spacers flat in the corners but vertical 2 per edge of the tile depending on tile size.
Spread thinset on the back of the tiles as well as floor to ensure proper bonding.
