This is my favorite version of my favorite song by Chan.

going through the different versions of metal heart on utb, i feel that none have come near reaching the dislodging of emotions achieved with the drunken, delayed timing of the guitars in the original album recording. later versions seem to mishandle and inarticulate this crucial timing and, in the end, loose the soul of the song as it was forged. nonetheless, all are valuable, despite the fact that newer recordings change the meaning of the song .

saw her at this time -1998 - in australia. hadn't heard of her but she was playing with jim white, drummer from the dirty three so went. small bar & small crowd, she stood mostly behind & off to side of jim white, with a long fringe covering her face, so quite distant & reserved. but was compelling, as quite different feel to average rock gig at time, the reserve toward audience made it bit uneasy & out of norm, audience wasn't entirely sure how to respond to absent/present singer. her best song

Cat Power is amazing, the metal and background instruments on this number is really cool. I like the more hard core stuff better than the complete solo stuff she does, that sometimes borders on emo.

It's so awesome to listen to this and to b eable to listen to the 2008 rendition, and know that when she used to sing it she thought she had life figured out, but when she sings it now she can look back and see how much better life really is. I'm so happy that she's finally free as she always wanted to be (at least from alcohol).
