Pretty bad too. Bio-diesel is produced mostly from rapeseed (afaik). Rapeseed drains soil way too fast. It would be impossible to produse in required quantities without dumping enormous ammounts of fertilizers into it - and fertilizers are petroleum products - bringing us back to the oil shortage.
Common mistake is to think that oil is only required for transportation. In fact, of all things that require oil, gasoline is the easiest one to replace.

No matter how much the US drilled post 1970 there was and never will be oil self sufficiency, and in fact you are becomming more and more dependent on foreign oil. The only way around this is to reduce oil dependency. Check out the independent studies into oil production, post 1970 yourin decline!

The technology is not there to make a viable car that doesn't use gasoline. I don't know if a gasoline-electric hybrid is practical, but if so, you still need gasoline.

#1 You only need gasoline until the conversion takes place (which will not happen until more Republicans step up to the plate in Washington and choose this route instead of the threaten our health/environment route of drilling everywhere).
#2 If drilling starts, the middle east will lower their prices and the US will once again be forced to cave in to foreign oil. It never ends.
#3 This will eventually lead right back to the situation we're in right now.

USA oil peaked in 1970, North Sea, 1999, Australia 1999, The only oil that maybe has not peaked YET (but its close) is some foreign oil from Arab states. Do you all want to be reliant on foreign oil? The only thing to reduce reliance on foreign oil (its too late to remove it), is to use less oil, period.

Pretty bad too. Bio-diesel is produced mostly from rapeseed (afaik). Rapeseed drains soil way too fast. It would be impossible to produse in required quantities without dumping enormous ammounts of fertilizers into it - and fertilizers are petroleum products - bringing us back to the oil shortage.
Common mistake is to think that oil is only required for transportation. In fact, of all things that require oil, gasoline is the easiest one to replace.

@towman2620 Um, the USA has not been self sufficient in oil, since 1970 and never will be at current levels of consumption. Administrations in the past have talked about it, but it HAS NEVER HAPPENED SINCE 1970. If you lowered the taxes, then people would buy more and then due to demand outstripping supply, the price would rise above current levels, with no revenue for government. You have been reliant on foreign (mostly ARAB) oil since 1970

@frankclau At least you are thinking, unlike most of the people posting here. The reality is that even if you drill more, you will still be dependent on foreign oil. No matter how much the US drilled post 1970 there was and never will be oil self sufficiency, and in fact you are becomming more and more dependent on foreign oil. The only way around this is to reduce oil dependency. Check out the independent studies into oil production, post 1970 yourin decline!

The economy is NOT bad. We have a 2% growth even with high gas prices and some mortgage issues. Your point on the gold issue is true though, more importantly, buying stuff people cannot afford hurts us all. The only thing more drilling and shale production will do is make the rich richer. I sure as hell don't want people like G.W. to become richer than they are. The solution is to manufacture automobiles that do not depend on gasoline. If it was up to conservative Republicans, they'd have all our land stripped and polluted for the sake of making a buck.

There is no short-term solution except to increase the supply, and those who say "we won't see a price reduction for ten years" are foolish.
When the serious work begins, OPEC and other oil producers are going to do whatever it takes to de-motivate us from drilling. Why would we drill if oil was cheap?

The technology is not there to make a viable car that doesn't use gasoline. I don't know if a gasoline-electric hybrid is practical, but if so, you still need gasoline.
I'll bet the oil was cheaper in part because middle eastern nations didn't regulate the industry to death like we do.

#1 You only need gasoline until the conversion takes place (which will not happen until more Republicans step up to the plate in Washington and choose this route instead of the threaten our health/environment route of drilling everywhere).
#2 If drilling starts, the middle east will lower their prices and the US will once again be forced to cave in to foreign oil. It never ends.

The US consumes a heck of a lot more then it produces, why do you think Presidents Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush Snr, Clinton promissed oil independence but NONE could deliver. The US imported 60% of its oil during the Clinton Administration.

The benefit of paying the significant extra cost of buying a "fuel efficient" car won't see any benefit for the user for at least 5-7 years.
