Great folk songs performed like this reminds me why I fell in love with writing songs and playing guitar. GREAT VERSION! I am wanting to cover this real soon and this video helped me understand the phrasing of these intelligent lyrics that tell a very good story while sharing a bit of history. Thank you for posting this! Mark
The words are native to the North of England and it wsa traditionally called the White Cockade. There is also a Jacobite song of the same name with very different words.
A beautiful, beautiful song - particularly good live. Not entirely sure it's actually irish tho - many great folk songs aren't as it's not actually compulsary!
Not at all sure, indeed. There was a lot of cross-fertilisation over the years. It wasn't only in the sixties that English soldiers went to Ireland, heard Irish songs and brought them back, whilst trading their own English tunes in exchange. A good song is a good song, no matter its birthplace. Lovely version here, though.
No offence but America will NEVER be able to recreate this style of music because it is inspired solely by the west country and Irish culture etc. Love this song, one of my favourite from SOH.
I agree with you Guitargenius. There are many local Irish bands near my home. I think the one that is best is the one that most of members have been to Ireland. So it has more meaning to them and more feeling to the songs.
No offence taken but I have to ask...Where do you think we Americans came from. We didn't just spring up out of the ground one day. Many of us can trace our roots. Some of mine came from Liverpool. Others from North Wales trying to make a better life for themselves. Doesn't mean we've forgotten where we're from.
I first saw Show of Hands about 22 years ago in Guernsey and have loved their stuff ever since. While some of their other tracks are better known - Country Jack, Roots etc. - perhaps because they are songs with a (soft) political message about Cornwall/ West Country issues I still think this is a beautiful song. Simple but fantastic. Cheers to Steve and Phil.
getting the chance to go and see them live soon. only heard them last year on youtube. donk ask where ive been as i dont know.? great band. ive got the cds and dvd.

This version was collected in Beaminster, Dorset, UK in 1904. I know that Ms Rusby does a Yorkshire version.

Believe me, I know. That's what sucks for people like me who have ex-pat parents and want to see this style of music travel across the pond.
