Your question is based on the assumption that cigarette taxes will pay for healthcare - they won't - but if people want to engage in consumption of unhealthy products then they can subsidize healthcare costs for the day that their habits catch up with them.
And I don't think anyone expects smokers to quit overnight with this tax. But assuming that day came, the tax would no longer be needed since the added costs due to tobacco related health problems would no longer add to healthcare costs.
Those concepts are not mutually exclusive. By taxing cigarettes the government creates an economic incentive to get people to quit smoking - for those willing to pay this will bring in funds into the coffers - for those willing to quit, there's a health benefit to the individual and a long-term benefit to society by reducing smoking induced health problems (both primary and secondary).

I quit smoking 2 years ago...can't stand the stuff now...HOWEVER...I will NEVER slam anyone for smoking because the single biggest reason I will NEVER smoke again is if I have to ever quit again I will make the 11 o'clock news!
For some people it is easy to quit, for others its terribly difficult. I personally quit cold turkey with no problems. But I'm atypical cuz I only smoked 1/2 pack/day for 2-3 years. I actually quit smoking cuz I started running alot and I didn't feel like smoking after running 2-3 miles a day. And my ADD made it easy for me to forget about wanting a smoke. The physical addiction is broken after like 4 days then its all mental. And if you can't focus enough to go buy a pack its easy.
Well...I smoked a pack to a pack and a half a day for 20 years...and I can tell you the physical addiction lasts longer than 3 or 4 days...my withdrawal lasted about 3 weeks and as far a psychological goes, I can tell you that after 2+ years I still pat my pocket as I am leaving the house thinking "Do i have my cigarettes and lighter?" as I am leaving the house in the morning. I will likely always have a psychological tie to cigarettes...but I have zero desire to smoke.

After that it is all psychological, which don't get me wrong is very powerful. Actually more powerful in some ways than a physical addiction. I don't ever "want" a smoke, but it seems odd to be in a bar or sitting at a table playing poker or drinking a few beers and not be smoking a cigarette. Sometimes I still feel like when I get in the car I should be lighting up.
@gonavy505 Quitting is not easy and some people have a more addictive nature than others. My husband has tried nicotene patches, candy replacements, Chantix, cold turkey, and other options. The result: He still smokes. I'm thinking these chemicals in there are making it worse and smells like cow doo doo. So he's making his own cigarrettes to see if using pure tobacco might be less addictive and then he could wean off. It saves $12/carton and smells better, he coughs less at least.

Though the gum is obviously better for you and less expensive than cigarettes, it is in itself addictive to be honest. I had to quit the gum over a year ago and I still chew regular sugar free gum...but at $2.00 a week vs. $50+ a week I will gladly take it.

I personally know people who have wound up in the emergency room from skateboarding while blackout drunk, and who have walked out a second story window while drunk. I have NEVEr known anybody to do ANYTHING like this while high.

Your question is based on the assumption that cigarette taxes will pay for healthcare - they won't - but if people want to engage in consumption of unhealthy products then they can subsidize healthcare costs for the day that their habits catch up with them.
And I don't think anyone expects smokers to quit overnight with this tax. But assuming that day came, the tax would no longer be needed since the added costs due to tobacco related health problems would no longer add to healthcare costs.

Those concepts are not mutually exclusive. By taxing cigarettes the government creates an economic incentive to get people to quit smoking - for those willing to pay this will bring in funds into the coffers - for those willing to quit, there's a health benefit to the individual and a long-term benefit to society by reducing smoking induced health problems (both primary and secondary).

I know it's really nothing to get all riled up about but smoking is clinically proven to cause bad health effects, in no circumstance shall smoking be considered good. For some people it is easy to quit, for others its terribly difficult. I personally quit cold turkey with no problems. But I'm atypical cuz I only smoked 1/2 pack/day for 2-3 years. I actually quit smoking cuz I started running alot and I didn't feel like smoking after running 2-3 miles a day. And my ADD made it easy for me to forget about wanting a smoke. The physical addiction is broken after like 4 days then its all mental. And if you can't focus enough to go buy a pack its easy.

Well...I smoked a pack to a pack and a half a day for 20 years...and I can tell you the physical addiction lasts longer than 3 or 4 days...my withdrawal lasted about 3 weeks and as far a psychological goes, I can tell you that after 2+ years I still pat my pocket as I am leaving the house thinking "Do i have my cigarettes and lighter?" as I am leaving the house in the morning. I will likely always have a psychological tie to cigarettes...but I have zero desire to smoke.

After that it is all psychological, which don't get me wrong is very powerful. Actually more powerful in some ways than a physical addiction. I don't ever "want" a smoke, but it seems odd to be in a bar or sitting at a table playing poker or drinking a few beers and not be smoking a cigarette. Sometimes I still feel like when I get in the car I should be lighting up.

@gonavy505 Quitting is not easy and some people have a more addictive nature than others. My husband has tried nicotene patches, candy replacements, Chantix, cold turkey, and other options. The result: He still smokes. I'm thinking these chemicals in there are making it worse and smells like cow doo doo. So he's making his own cigarrettes to see if using pure tobacco might be less addictive and then he could wean off. It saves $12/carton and smells better, he coughs less at least.

Though the gum is obviously better for you and less expensive than cigarettes, it is in itself addictive to be honest. I had to quit the gum over a year ago and I still chew regular sugar free gum...but at $2.00 a week vs. $50+ a week I will gladly take it.
Tell your husband to keep fighting, it's worth it and I wish him and you all the best. I can honestly say, it ain't easy!

Although, I don't agree with the drug test congress thing, but I'm assuming that was kind of a joke.
And I think his Dr. should be able to recommend whatever they think is appropriate.
But as far as everyone else, STOP pretending like politicians, olympic athlete's etc. have to be held to some higher standard regarding sex, drugs, etc. If it's not effecting your ability to work it's none of my business.

I really don't care if he smokes. I think everyone should give up smoking, but it's sort of funny that a guy who thinks he's the smartest guy in the room does something so bad for his health.
On the other hand, he should cut back on the drinking. He had to have been drunk to come up with some of the policies he has, not to mention some of the things he's said.

I agree but do recognize that part of the argument for outlawing drugs is that they are hurtful. That is a bullshit reason but never the less a common opinion.
My point is that since smoking weed it not nearly as hurtful as alcohol consumption, a president who is not willing to legalize weed should not drink alcohol alcohol either.

But 85.000 deaths in the US are caused by alcohol each year, while NONE are caused by Marijuana.

Actually you drive carefully when high and definitely more careful compared to drunks. But I was talking about direct deaths, not indirect effect of stupid actions caused by intoxication. You can't die from a marijuana OD and abuse doesn't kill you in the long run either.
I also guarantee you that the indirect deaths from marijuana are tiny compared with alcohol. Marijuana makes you peaceful and inactive while alcohol often causes aggression and inability to understand ones psychical limits.

There is absolutely no question if you look at the scientific literature that alcohol is more harmful. Liver damage, drunk driving, tendency towards violence, tendency to engage in unprotected sex, tendency to make poor decisions that directly result in you injury.
I personally know people who have wound up in the emergency room from skateboarding while blackout drunk, and who have walked out a second story window while drunk. I have NEVEr known anybody to do ANYTHING like this while high.

It's not so much that he smokes, it's more hypocrisy than anything. Raising taxes on cigarettes and telling people to stop, but yet he still continues? I think that's what people are more pissed off about. I agree with you that he should smoke if he wants to, but if he is, then he should stop raising taxes on cigarettes and telling people to quit.
