Seven Nation Army is only done by one band and one band only. You can add all kinds of different distortions and what not but a singer is what makes the song the song especially when the original band is only two members. Actually speaking of this, I would like to see jack white and tom morello square off. they both are great and very original, creative artist. OFC it´s different, what´s the point in doing an exact cover of any song? Get a great tune to use as base, then add your personal touch to it! Part of the charm of the White Stripes is its minimalistic rythm base, but that doesn´t make a "fuller" version automatically bad.

As much as I agree to some extent you can make clear cases for artists and bands becoming quite redundant and churning out music just for the sake of it. You dont think there is such a thing as creative integrity? Off the top of my head a great example is comparing John Lennon to Paul McCartney, I think the difference is quite clear. Mike Patton is another good example, a great talent who has totally shunned the mainstream success, few probably have the mind to do that though.
