  • Can computer glasses help prevent myopia ???

  • @MegaRichie10 In general, computer glasses have convex lenses that have refractive powers suited for normal viewing distances to computer monitors so they are related to reading glasses in principle. Furthermore, computer glasses usually have amber tint that attenuate some of the blue-light frequency from LEDs or the fluorescent back-light of LCD monitors.

  • @MegaRichie10 Many of the "computer glasses" on various websites do not list the diopter values of lenses so they may just be plano tinted lenses and therefore more like light amber sunglasses, and quite different from convex lens reading glasses. Since many people today spend many more hours reading from computer screen than from print, investing in a pair of quality computer glasses from an optometry clinic, then using it correctly may reduce visual discomforts and strains.

  • why does lights and car lights looks like fireworks? lol :p

  • While the minus (when prescribed) is claimed to have "no adverse" effect on the natural eye's refractive status, the dead opposite is true in science. Watch the video response. This issue of "trust" is clear. All professionals SHOULD INFORM YOU of this proven effect of the minus on the natural eye. Virtually none of them will tell you, although science does.

  • I don't want retina detachment!!

  • @syncrjr Neither do I -- but start wearing a strong minus, and in due course you will get down to -8 diopters. That level is "high risk" for a detachment. (Medical study proved this truth.) A person might not "like" wearing a plus for prevention, but saving your vision, and preventing detached retinas is a major reason for supporting Don's advocacy.

  • So since I have nearsightedness, does that mean I can never see far away objects clearly again?

  • @AwesomeBeast95 It depends case by case. Generally, some near focusing may be attributed to ciliary muscle and can be reduced by reducing near focusing. However, over time for many reasons including the environmental stress of near focusing, nearsightedness can become a more permanent condition.

  • so all the eye exercises are bs since this video says its irreversable?

  • does Nearsightedness always get worse with age or can it sometimes get better? My grandmother was Nearsighted as a child but her eye sight got better ago here 40's and now she just uses reading glasses.

  • Explains why I wear glasses, I'm a huge computer addict

  • eye doctors betrayed me. >.>

  • Also when i stare in a dark room without flashing, my eyes goes blind for some seconds.

Try to stare in a dark room without flashing with the door open.

  • I'm nearsighted and when i look at lights they look like fireworks! no joke :p

  • So basically you can make your eyesight better by not letting the muscles lock up with reading glasses?

  • Do I were my glasses or not???

  • 2 years to late =(((((((

  • Oh crap, I'm nearsighted, now I'm scared of reading and looking at stuff close to me!!! :::::::::( Have I ruined my eye sight? I have glasses too and I'm scared of warring them too now!!! D::::::: I hope this isn't right!!! D:::

  • @Minpin45 To clarify, the muscle spasms are temporary but can contribute to nearsightedness which is usually permanent.

  • @MyopiaPrevention my near site start in the 11th grade (2007) i recognized that i couldn’t see from the back of the class anymore although the pervious semester i could. Then i got reading classes then my eyes became dependent on them. Now i have to read them often, i try my best not wear them often. Some eye doctors don’t offer the option of reading glasses. Thanks for the info

  • Anyway to reverse myopia?

  • @d0ubl3sh0t1 I am not aware of options for reversing the structural changes in the eyes (axial elongation) often associated with myopia development.

  • ah oh well. I love my glasses anyway.

  • Too late, i've already got -1.75 on my left eye and -1.25 on my right. hihhihihi

I will probably fic it with laser when I'm 20 or something

  • @PolleScrew Its not too late. At the very least take your glasses off when your reading.

  • After reading your website, I feel completely betrayed by my optometrist. I'm so short sighted, after a few inches from my face everything is blurry. I never wanted to be reliant on glasses. I want to stop it or try to reverse it somehow, but I don't think its possible. ;.;

  • @ScarlettKitsune

I can relate to how you feel and hope more people can prevent nearsightedness from the earliest detection of symptoms and I hope optometrist can become part of the crusade. The hope here is, many cases of nearsightedness are continually changing conditions and preventative steps at any stage "to stop it" (to reducing it's progression) is far better than no action at all. Thanks for sharing your comments.

  • @MyopiaPrevention is this good for people who already have myopia? does it help stop or slow down progression?

  • @ScarlettKitsune I know how you feel. If you really wanna be pissed check out the glasses for babies websites out there. They have pics of 4 month olds wearing glasses

  • @ScarlettKitsune Have you considered orthokeratology?

  • Whoops too late. :(

  • A question: So so far i have been able to understand that Due unnatural habit of ours of looking at near distance causes our eye muscles to lock up somehow and stay in their position but the real problem starts to happen that is elongation of eyeball. My question is why does eyeball elongate what forces it, unlike ciliary muscles they haven't been put to any unnatural condition light is light whether it be blur or focused.

  • our idiotic "civilized" way of life has screwed us all over

  • wow ty eyedoctors for ruining my eyes

  • @kampaneon9 You sure have no life, dude.

  • when i first got glasses the doc said i should just wear them when i'm reading, but my parents made me wear them all the time T.T

  • ya i have it and it sucks because im a tech guy and computers is my life :D

  • it's funny how on one site you hear this. and on another site you hear sometning else..thanks for nothing...in short: nice knowing that you can't even trust medicine and "doctors" nowdays

  • Well if you must know,my step father and I have myopia. When reading we don't wear our glasses. But, when were looking at distant things we us em'! Most docters or "eye" doctors don't imform you to not use them while reading nearby things as in books (this is if you wear - lenses). But if you're wearing reading glasses keepit up!!!!You're doing perfect!

  • 0:32 That girl in the classroom is a Slut.

  • I stare at compueter almost half of the hour!! O:

Nooo. Im starting too see blurry at the borad. I dont want to use glasse or do surhery or use lens. How can i prevent it i want to know please help me

  • Basic Science and Physics will tell you that the eye is "relaxed" when looking in the "distance". The plus lens CREATES distant efferct on the natural eye. The result is that plus-PREVENTION can be sustained as presented in this vidoe. This is the second-opinion on optometry and ophthalmology.

  • or you can just stare far away for a long time every day!!!!

  • mohammed is the murderer in chief, rapist in chief , child molester in chief.

and western leftists are stupid naive ignorant morons !

    ex-muslim from morocco.

  • it is not true un this clip, many kids with myopia of -3 D get worsen still, the real reason to get myopia is the overloading of academic learning during early ages.

  • mohamad=MASS MURDERER,RAPIST,LUSTFUL PEDO,SLAVE TRADER,ROBBER,TERRORIST,LIAR..did u kno dat?

  • To be fair there are a number of issues other then reading that also contribute to myopia. Poor nutrition and being indoor's also are not helthy for the eye. Nutrition especially in the growing years when the eye is vulnerable. I had a terrible diet in my teen years and in my high school year my prescription went from mild to about -4.75 which it mostly has stayed at in on eye although the other got up to -7.5. So there are a number of factors involved.

  • Shabeki,

There is nothing more blind than those who cannot see.....

    You are a myopic coward.

  • This is rubbish, the claims are unfounded. It has also been proven that underprescribing children can also create myopia as it causes the eyes to be put under extra stress trying to focus.

If the theories in this film were true then every child going through school who reads for any period of time will have their eyes lock up and therefore should be prescribed "reading glasses"

Perhaps if they wish to create a helpful video they should actually do some research with profesionals first

  • Actually, this 'locking up' is generally accepted by orthodox optometrists -- it's called nearwork-induced transient myopia. However; orthodox optometrists believe this type of myopia is only temporary and need not be relieved. Prevention minded optometrists believe that nearwork-induced transient myopia usually precedes axial myopia (elongation of the eyeball), so if you can relieve it, you will also stop the onset of axial myopia. Wearing plus glasses is just one such way to relieve it.

  • what evidence you have that wearing glasses helps to stop deterioration of long distance vision? sure nutrition and straining the eye contribute but i believe people who wear glasses are ignorant of the strains and tensions in the head and eye muscles. They simply want to continue their unhealthy lifestyle and have no value for good quality healthy vision.

i stopped wearing glasses and did the eye exercises on youtube and my myopia problem has halved and my prescription halved in 1 week

  • Good. My brother also discarded his glasses a few weeks ago, and his acuity has improved by a quarter. There is a lot of evidence for using READING glasses for myopia prevention, try reading the 'myopia manual' by Klaus Schmidt (it's free online). In layman's terms, reading glasses works by reducing the effort that is needed to see things close up (the accommodation), minus glasses work the opposite way and increase the accommodation. Excess accommodation can increase myopia.

  • @dinkaDPB

    what kind of exercises

    can I have the link

  • @Val1436 search "no lasek" in youtube and there are natural eyesight restoration sites and books

  • Mhmm, Yeah I'm gunna wear reading glasses to prevent Myopia when I WAS BORN WITH MYOPIA!!! Not everyone is born with perfect vision... m.m

  • Indeed. If you are born with congenital myopia, then reading glasses will not help your condition. Most people have what is called 'acquired' myopia. 'Congenital' myopia is very rare condition that affects only a tiny percentage of the population.

  • I'm very skeptical of this pseudo-scientific information. where is the scientific work regarding the claims on this video? The links to supporting evidence do not in fact support these claims. So, I believe it's more likely that this video is not correct. If these claims are true then please produce/link to some clear evidence.

  • For a comprehensive review of the scientific research available supporting myopia prevention, I recommend that you read the 'myopia manual' by Dr Klaus Schmid (just google it, it's available as a free PDF.)

  • Thanks for the resource. Still, even in Dr. Klaus' manual, the issue is not as clear cut as this video implies.

Read the comments here and you find people who are led by this vid to believe that their vision correction is just making the problem worse. That's irresponsible and intellectually dishonest.

This fight should be taking place in scientific tests & journals in order to advise professionals who understand the data rather than inciting neophites to not trust their doctors.

  • To date, the optical industry has shown little interest in identifying myopia prevention methods, and is still trying to cling to outdated theories. One reason for this lack of progress is public apathy. As the idea that myopia is unpreventable is ingrained into the public consciousness, it's easy for the industry to ignore the issue of prevention. Videos like this are needed to raise public awareness of prevention, and to pressure the industry into increasing prevention research funding.

  • Should I feel bad that this was one of my recommended videos? And I do have really fucked up eyes. Damn you youtube for being so good at judging people. ;__;

  • I have a really bizarre prescription, like so:

    OD +1.50 / -1.50 Prism 1.5 BU

    OS +1.50 / -1.25 Prism 1.5 BD

Two years ago, my eye doctor would have bet that I would have needed to wear glasses by now, but I find my vision is fine. Not perfect but fine. I think the reason I get away with both distance and close up for now, is that my farsightedness is counteracted with a minus astigmatism.

So far, I haven't bothered with glasses. I'm also 41 years old.

  • This is bullcrap. The fact the the eye GROWS causes the worsening of the eye. Primarily, this is caused by GENETICS. I am a -8.00 (2 diapoters from legal blindness!) and my 3 year old son is already a -4.00. I started wearing glasses in 2nd grade because I could not see! It ALL STOPPED getting worse when I was in my late teens when my EYE stopped growing.

  • Genetics are important, and will play a part in giving you a predisposition to the development of myopia, but it is not the full story. Other factors also play an important role such as over-use of the eyes in doing near work and nutrition. Some would argue that environmental factors are the primary role in the development of myopia, and I would agree with this. LGascco, despite your genetic predisposition, it's possible that your myopia could have been reversed given the right early treatment.

  • how are these kids supposed to know how dangerous minus lenses are?

  • People either need to be more curious about things they don't know or people who know needs to spread the messsage. Perhaps the most effective method may be petition(s) which can both informs the public and demand more corrective actions from government and the optical establishment.

  • Has such a petition been made available? If not, shouldn't we start one?

  • Such petition has not being initiated, but I welcome any valueable inputs for developing an effective petition.

I am strongly in favor of a more traditional non electronic petition but I am open to other ideas as well.

  • @MyopiaPrevention Hi MyopiaPrevention, will eating fruits and vegetables with Vitamin A help to lessen nearsightedness? Because I am one, I have Myopia, due to book reading addiction :[ I wanna see better. Thanks.

  • @Skulker2797 Hi, I'm nearsighted like you and I started wearing glasses and contacts many years ago, come to think about it I was a child. Now I'm 22 and even though my sight got worse due to young adulthood myopia progression, it begins to stabilize itself. Fruits and vegetables played and continue playing an important role: they're essential, think about the retina (fundus oculi), which health depends upon antocyanins (from blue berries), lutein (spinach, leafy vegetables)...

  • thank you for posting this video. It is disgusting how eye doctors prescribe minus lenses to "correct" our vision, when in the long run it only ruins our vision. They are well aware of this, but in the end it's all about money. We really need to find a cure.

  • Dammnit! I only wish this video was around 18 years ago. My eyes are now in terrible shape. At least with this knowledge we can now prevent others form ruining their eyesight.

  • gots to get some reeeadin glasses

  • Nearsightedness is baddddd.

    pooor poor eyes.

  • this junt is tis off da chainn

  • o baby

  • this video speaks the truth, but our eye care doctors don't care. Let's out everyone in glasses and blind them. Happen to me because no one cared, today I'm legally blind. Thanks Eye Doctor (Jew)

  • If is really bothering someone to be nearsighted, wait till your an adult and have Lasik Surgery...

  • The "or else" in this video is incorrect & even suspect or ignorant given that scientific research finds longer term rehabilitative therapy can make positive (neuroplastic) changes in the brain, repairing damaged areas by calling up undifferentiated stem cells by sheer focused determination engaging in your own rehab. Then there's the old Bates method whose book is titled, "Seeing Without Eyeglasses". Combine with the new info profiled in "The Brain That Changes Itself" by Dr. Norman Doidge

  • got 3 dips ... ffffffffffffffffff

  • when you said that "clar vision is lost forever" it made my stomatch feel funny. however i bought "rebuild your vision" programe and i just started it. i will update this comment in a months time to let others know if it actualy works (and i hope its not gonna make it worse) i'm 17yrs and im -2.50. im also consuming lutein and ocu-plus... also eating sooo many carrots & blueberries lol. :p . im also relaxing my eyes every 10mins when doing close up activities. ***thankyou for the video anyway***

  • man iv been wearing my granpas readin glases and not much has happened [in a day]

  • tell us if it makes any difference after a week :D

  • Comment removed

  • for fuck sake d eye doctors never tell you the reading glasses option. now im nearsighted i wish i watched this before. oh yeah and do i have the right to sew my doctor or opticians [specsavers]

  • Wear glasses around the house, take em off when going outside. Not so bad; sure as hell beats glasses in the house and then contacts outside.

  • damn i needed to watch this video when i was ok , now i' m having this problem FUCK

  • same here... we worent as intrested in preventing myopia when we were ok... lol im -2.50 n i hate it

  • I'm having -1.50 but i think it's still increasing... it's something genetical at 18 (when it will stop) I'll make a LASIK surgery.

  • i was -0.75 then year later -1.25 then another year later -2.25 and now -2.50. and i REALLY HATE IT!!! so i did som research on how to prevent it from developing... and you also NEED to do som research before considering a lasik surrgery... once its doe its done no way back :/

  • so genetics has nothing to do with wearing glasses? I find that hard to believe.

  • Genetics affects your predisposition to nearsightedness. Close focusing tasks however is a huge contributing factor and it can be reduced greatly with reading glasses. Most cases of nearsightedness could have being prevented by taking away close focusing stress.

  • @MyopiaPrevention My mom always told me if you look at the tv to close your going to end up wearing glasses. My friend mom told him the same thing. Now we're both 25. I'm nearsigthed and he's not even though he spent hours playing video games as much as I did, maybe even more. I kind of think it is genentics. Wonder If i would still be nearsighted if I never watch tv or read anything.

  • @tigerboyX everyone is born with different levels of farsightedness. This acts as a "buffer" You have been born with less a buffer than your friend but you wouldnt be nearsighted if you were outsided all day likes kids used to be many years ago.

  • this isn't true, and it calls itself an international film but it's just american, that just one country. short sightedness is genetic

  • So should all of us who work in front of a PC all day long use reading glasses every now and then to prevent myopia? I wouldn't mind wearing glasses while working to protect my eyesight.

Employers should enforce reading glasses as part of work safety.

  • Taking precautions for near work is a good practice. Perhaps a caution message could be displayed on the screen whenever the computer is turning on.

  • Increasing the viewing distance to the monitor would also be beneficial. Person with average visual acurity can easily view a 19" monitor at least 6 feet away for many tasks. That distance can be further increased with larger monitors or a LCD projector.

Setting the monitor on a separate table or mounting it on a wall is a quite easily made and inexpensive arrangement.

As a bonus, it may give your work station that high tech conference room look. Protect your eyes can be stylish!

  • what the hell, if you can already see close then why do you need reading glasses?

  • Just because the depth of field is restricted, that doesn't mean the near-sighted focusing threshold can't deteriorate as well. It happens, quite frequently actually as a circumstance of natural eye-sight degeneration associated with any number bodily or external processes (age, injury, etc.).

  • Reading glasses reduce close focusing strain on your eyes. You don't need them to see but they do reduce the risk of becoming nearsighted when doing rading and other close work..

  • i got it from high school

  • If that were true, everyone student would have it. Your physiology more than likely predisposed you to the affliction. Your manifestation of near-sightedness can more than likely be attributed to internal, congenital etiology, perhaps a structural abnormality exacerbated by prolonged periods of near-sight.

  • Dang. About 12 years too late for me.

  • lol me too.

  • I was diagnosed when I was 13 years old. When I was 13 I had braces and I looked like a dork, so I never wore my glasses. So over time my eyesight got worse and worse. By the time I got my braces off I had went from .75 vision to -4. Now I have -5 vision. I got contacts and I have been wearing contacts ever since.

  • dont use glasses and lenses because it will worse your eye disorder i experienced it when i wear its clear but after 4 months it worse need again big grade glasses T_T

  • im nearsighted TT im 17 yrs old i dont like this to worse TT

  • wow i so got nearsighted by my computer :|

  • This is not necessarily true. You've experienced what is known as a correlative rationalization. There is not necessarily a causal relationship between the deterioration of your eyesight and your computer use.

  • This is all BS.... I have been using computers and reading books since i was 6 years old i`m 28 now.... And when i`m talking about using computers i dont mean 1 hour a week... more like 30 hours a week if not even more.. I have 20/20 vision and i hope it will stay like that forever ( i doubt) but i can tell you that computers dont cause Nearsightedness. Anyway there was another study done not that long ago on how computers dont cause vision problems unlike this video says...

  • All in all it depends on the genetics dicipline and willingness of the individual to force thier eyes to focus. I too have near perfect vision and am also 28, but I have a long long family line of folks needing glasses, including all siblings and parent, aunts, uncles etc. I can remeber starting to have trouble see and continualy forced myself to focus, and grew out of it.

  • how on earth could mental illness cause damage to your eyes? are you just ignorant or are you brain damaged?

it's caused by having the wrong shape eyeball which is nothing to do with muscles (they only move the lens) and is more likely to occur if a family member has glasses. like your parents and your brothers. it's likely that you may need glasses when you are older, or that your children will

  • Comment removed

  • mmmm, " I'd probably sooner attribute eye damage to poor nutrition and mental illness", yeah you did say that. all you're doing is proving that you are ignorant and prejudiced. mental illness is when you have a problem with how you think. problems that involve the physical processing of sensory information are neurological.

as for family members, that's an analogy for genetics and heredity

  • Comment removed

  • you're a poo poo face

  • how mature. as you've just censored yourself, that can only mean you're ashamed

  • The part on mental illness is totally unnecessary and irrelevant to this video.

  • i know, that's why i replied to that idiot. i suffer from clinical depression so his prejudice offended me. what he said was ridiculous

  • yo junsun, This is Ian Schoch

    I love your video!

Are you going to post a video that has my comments from math class?

    I hope so

  • awsome

  • what a load....

how bout the eyeball being larger (wider)? thus having blurred vision?

  • so should we all get reading glasses?

  • It depends. Reading glasses for close work is a good preventative measure and off the rack ones are very inexpensive. It's worth a try if you are just becoming nearsighted since it may reverse low levels of nearsightedness. Those who are not at risk of becoming nearsighted do not need them until presbyopia arises.

  • how about if the doctor said "okay, now, I want you to wear these the whole time" (it was my 1st real eye check up since i was 6 (6 years ago)) also, can contacts help? I don't want to be feeling weird for long periods of time with glasses. Please help answer my two questions... thanks!

  • Assuming the glasses helps you see clearly in the distance, then the glasses should only be used to see the distance. If you are just beginning to have blurred view of the distance, there is a good chance you can reverse your nearsightedness using reading glasses. Normal prescription contacts don't prevent nearsightedness. But you can still wear reading glasses with them which will reduce focusing stresses on the eye.

  • Okay, thank you!

  • wait.. i thought this was some kind of spoof... wtf?

  • i love this video very nice work

    !!

  • might have been better with actual people, but that has some good stuff.... no wonder my eyes suck now lol

  • Thanks... that was useful.

  • If this is how myopia develops, what about farsightedness? This theory suggests that farsighted people focus on far things more often than nearsighted people, even though both have the same lifestyle and habits. Also, what about people with different prescriptions for different eyes? I know many people who have differing prescriptions for each eye. In fact, one of these people is nearsighted in one eye, and farsighted in the other. This theory is definitely missing something important.

  • ^ This kid is retarded, the kind of kid that would be named jon

  • There is a lot of good, second opinion, information in this announcement. Interesting theory on the relationship between the cil muscles and the eye shape. Not sure about +lens treatment but it might work for low level early myopia.

For those further along, there is also hope. The ultimate cause of almost all acuity failures is "mental strain". Unfortunately, pop medicine isn't about taking responsibility for your mind and wouldn't promote something FREE like relaxation. -> Bates Method

  • wow i missed out. at least i'll be able to recommend this to my baby cousin

  • ur the man junsun!

    Alex V

  • this is groundbreaking!

  • isnt there a way to heal this as well?

  • darn, if i only i knew this before...now im stuck with glasses

  • I have to wear glasses for watching tv, computer, and driving.

  • wow kinda late

  • Yeah about 10 years too late.

  • Dammit. Wish I had known this about 9 years ago. Save me from permanent near-sightedness. *cries*

  • oh great, too late for me. >_>

  • I wish I had known this before I got glasses

  • cool video!

  • conclusion of reading glasses to help, very nice!
