  • The Master indeed! You can tell he still has that undying love of the drums he probably had starting out. I think that's true of a lot of us drummers that have gotten on in age yet still can't put the sticks down but that quality is always on display when I see the old clips of Philly Joe!

  • Super great drummer, those drums are smoken, he put a hurt-en on those drums God Bless

  • good drummer, horrible drum sound

  • one is joey jordisson's fans

  • nardis!!

  • Amazing and inspiring.

  • Wooo, fab stuff...

  • Like Ginger Baker uses to say these are (were) the drummers who crosses the doors of Time!

  • I also find it interesting that he is playing Premier drums. Never seen a total jazz drummer using a Premier drum kit, at least not an American drummer. They were made in England in the beginning.

  • @AstralPlane1951 its nice to find another drummer with knowledge on the history of the kit! that didn;t even occur to me!

  • If the guy did that for an hour or more it would still be fully engrossing. Sheer genius talent.

  • Those were the days when a drum solo was a drum solo - entertainment and not just rudiments to impress naive onlookers. Philly Joe (RIP).

  • PHilly was un believable

  • FAT!

  • Nice to see good video of PJJ. Most don't do the recorded playing justice.

  • The master at work!!!!

  • im getting a huge morning feel from this guy. dont ask me why

  • its good to hear philly joe when he's not high out of his mind

  • he play a premier drum!!!! , strange for a jazz drummer but when you are a genius the drum is not important

  • take a look at Joe Murello 1961 solo, this drummer can kick ass.

  • incredible, drum solos that actually entertain instead of just trying to impress

  • Zaknrfamaa, your are so right...the SH@T they kids listen to think these rock stars like Tommy Lee and Peart are real drummers. REALLY LAUGH OUT LOUD...HARDLY!

  • philly joe...THE KING

  • Philly joe was one of the few that was born to kick ass day after day

  • Damn where is the rest!!!! How can you post a video with this group and not show Marc and Bill killin' as well?

  • holy shiz nit this guy kiks some serious ass but definately there is no best drummer especially when ur judging jazz drummers

  • This guy's the shit..I don't know or CARE if he's got the most talent or not, but..I like his style the most out of ALL Jazz drummers!

Partially due to his being on John Coltrane's album Blue Train!

  • Smasher !!

  • Where can I find videos or DVDs of the Bill Evans trio with Philly Joe Jones?

  • Wow!! Man thanks so much for sharing this!! I'm a Philly Joe freak to say the least!!! The guy could do anything!!

  • i wish i could have meet philly. i meet his son chris a year after philly died. chris is also a phenomenal drummer. i even have a floor tom that was once owned by philly.

  • Holy crap, that was some funky drum work, that cat is dangerous, what skills!!!

  • Got to see Philly Joe Jones once at the Painted Bride in Philly... he did a solo, it had some oceanic, rolling, blistering parts, but at one point, he let things get real quiet, and with a smile, just rolllllled one brush across his rack tom head from the top to the bottom, making a little "whisp-thump-whisp-thump..." series of sounds--perfectly in time... then snatched his brushes again to finish off his solo. Guy just played the drums like an freshly unwrapped birthday present.

  • You make an important point, PJJ had the best brush work I ever heard, only Max came close.

  • Don't forget Kenny Clarke, my dear zeemann.

    Greetings!

  • Very good point Klook stared it all,he invented the bomb and the crash . Changed the use of the ride cymbal.KC is the most underreconized dummer

in the history of Be bob. But you didn't forget. Thanks, aselmerius

  • consider yourself one of the luckiest men alive.

  • So slick. Damn.

  • what year is this video?

  • i just saw the end ofthe video.... thanks alot! hahaha
