What IS it with rats trying to get into your mouth? We call Olive the Dentist Rat because she has this evil technique of using her sharp claw to get your lip which causes you to exclaim out loud, IOW, open your mouth and then she quickly shoves in her head to "inspect".
That is exactly how one of my rats treats my kitties--she examines them over and over again, like "What are you?" then she comes back and does it again in 30 seconds. My kitties, like yours, are very patient...
Is your cat declawed? We are getting 2 new kittens and they will be meeting our 2 pet rats and we really don't want to get them declawed. Please let me know.
No, she is not declawed. :) Be careful with your kitties, though. Molly (the cat in the video) doesn't mind rats, but our other two cats would eat my rat-babies in a heartbeat. Good luck!
Well... all my cats were strays, so I don't really know their histories. The vet estimated Molly at about 5 months old when I found her and the other two were maybe six months. Molly just happens to have a lovely personality and the other two... don't... haha... Maybe introducing them young will help, maybe not. Sorry I can't be more help. :(
Thanks, that gives me a little hope. Maybe introducing them daily starting at 8 weeks will make a difference. Maybe also that they will have always lived inside and not having to find "food" will make a difference too, but one never knows. Our two pet boy rats have 2 different personalities. One is very dominent and more aggressive and the other is sweet and timid. The dominent one may scare the kitties...we'll see, but we will be very protective of all involved!!
@meathena No, we did not declaw our 2 kitties who are now 10 months old. We trim their claws as the vet showed us.
I do bring the one docile gentle rat out with me and the kitties are near by and will sniff nose to nose with my supervision. I do not let them be alone or even run on the floor together because of being afraid Vincent (the rat) will run and hide where I wouldn't be able to get him out.I also am protecting my kitties who are curious but timid.
@meathena (cont.)Vincent bit my one very gentle kitty on her paw while she was sound asleep and it bled. Kitty did not know who bit her. This kitty would love to just lie down and cuddle or sleep next to Vincent but I am afraid he may bite just to show her he can. Everyday I sit with them both and am hoping (but realistic) that Vincent will trust the kitty & they actually can be around each other more. It is so neat to see them not be afraid of each other. I would never leave them unattended.
@joyville2 Also, Vincent has never bitten us so I think he did it to show dominance even though otherwise he is not an aggressive or or dominant little guy. Thanks for your comments.

@aprillonna The rats are not like, "what are you"? They are like, "Yeah. What now? Wanna take this to the street? Do something. Do something."

My girls used to be like that with the cat... With mine it was to do with them looking for a nice treat or a sip of drink.

I'm wondering if your other 2 cats grew up since kittens with your rats? Did Molly grow up from since she was a kitten with your rats?
Thanks!

Oo, yikes, don't be mean to your cat! Declawing cuts of the last joint of their fingers! It can cause lifelong pain and anxiety :-(
