what's heartbreaking - for a guitarist at least - is the economy of the guy's technique; his hands seem to be hardly moving, yet what's coming out of the instrument is unbelievable. beautiful. and yeah. GOOD farts.
Does anyone have a link to a transcription of this? I was going to order it from the States (I'm in the UK) and the website didn't do downloads - and they were going to charge me more for the shipping than it cost for the piece itself!
tspsync - Then you need to hear a guy named Phil Keaggy play Olsons. They are one of the best acoustic guitars out there and Phil Keaggy one of the worlds greatest acoustic guitar players. Check him out.
Great as usual. But I sure don't like how Olson's sound, especially the cedar topped ones. I am glad he only used it for a couple of years. But he tends to care more about necks than anything else. And he could make a plastic banjo sound great.
I saw him in 2002 in Minnesota at a very small auditorium. I could not believe the sound he got from his guitars; it was unbelievably beautiful. He looked like he wasn't even trying hard to play the set, he was just that good and it was that easy for him.
That's one of a million ways to put it, all good but in the end insufficient, because the only real way to understand is to go see and hear for yourself =D
It's got many different elements (folk, blues, jazz), and the tempo changes make it so unusual and memorable. 'Peckerwood' bears many of these traits.
First time I saw Leo was 1973 at the Spring Festival at Ohio University. James Taylor and Carly Simon were the headliners for the two-day event but Leo blew everyone away!!
I have seen him live many times- you must see him live eventually (sit close as possible) A truly great influence on the folk and jazz music world- A true master like no other; especially on the guitar he is unequalled- Mark
The mastery Kottke demonstrates with finger-picking is second to none! Many imitators out there but this is the Real Deal! A true pioneer in this genre probably never to be equaled again. It takes an incredible mind to play like this!!!
There is a slow tune by Percy Grainger (I think) that he performs occasionally. Anyone know the name of the tune or know of a video posting somewhere? Thanks.
By hearing the tune as originally recorded (on 'That's What', in 1990) I was never really crazy about it - but then I SAW THIS VIDEO and the process in creating the song! Right on the money, acousticland, most creative, indeed!
I bumped into Leo Kottke at an airport last week...what a nice guy! Friendly, easy to talk to, down-to-earth, and not at all stuck up or taken with himself. How refreshing!
Leo is always entertaining. He must have been asked to cut the tunes short, every live version of each of these tunes he vamps a lot more, especially on Oddball and Room at The Top.
Have been listening to Kottke since I was a child, and I never get tired of his playing. Simply wonderful musician. Oddball, the first song here, brings back family trips in the car, childhood, everything, really
Well if you have just discovered Leo, you are at the beginning of a long beautiful journey. He has been sooooo good for sooooo long. It amazes me how few people know about him. Enjoy.
I swear this man can sound like three sometimes.
I have never seen him play, would probably give my right foot... but for now I will have to continue to admire this amazing talent from afar.
Been a fan forever and I don't see that changing any time soon! ;c)

I think he might have been the inspiration for the super marios sound track. ;)
Definitely a very talented player, but not my taste of music.

Wow. Leo is the man. SO many layers! Sounds like he is in a guitar duel against one other, at times, two.

I think that Oddball is one of the most creative and crazy compositions of Leo Kottke.
I'd like to find out it with a tablature.
