A brilliant fight by Spinks. The thing about the Cuban fighters is if you attack them they're ineffective. A style like Spinks or Ray Mancini will beat the best Cuba has. At about 8:07 was the line by Cossel..." The Cuban is coming back". No way, Spinks was'nt hurt, look at the short chopping right he caught Soria at 8:21 and the monster Cuban is once a gain on his bicycle. From the begining to end this was a total butt whuppin............@ 9:10 !!
The Cuban fighters won so easily in many of their fights by KO that they were really not hit very hard. The USA fighters hit them really hard and most of them couldn't take it.
you can see Sixto looking around like "who the Hell is this guy"?? And I remember that None of the "experts" picked Spinks (Leon) to win up against the more "polished" fighters from Cuba.. You just don't often see someone RUN across a ring to knock them out!!
Got to give the Cuban credit for heart though he gave all he had. He shouldn't have been too over confident Spinks beat the Russian light heavy in his first fight in that Olympics.
This was THE fight of the 1976 Olympics that made me the proudest to be an American. We had some great fighters win the gold in that Olympics, but while Leon Spinks may have been the least talented he was also the most courageous. And Sixto Soria was no joke! He won Olympic gold in 1980.
@bigdatut, you are correct, sir, and that means I stand corrected! Good fighter, nonetheless! And that would be the Slobodan Kacar who disappeared from the pro ranks after losing by kayo twice, the first time to Bobby Czyz.
Damn, I'd always heard about this fight, and Spinks WAS impressive. It wasn't quite as close as I've heard. It looked like Leon had this one from start to finish. His REAL opponent was that referee because he saved the Cuban from a couple of KOs by forcing Leon to back off.

@DannyA123 No he didn't. In 1980 it was Slobodan Kacar from Yugoslavia. You're thinking of the World Games, where Sixto did win the gold in 1980.
