Anderson was actually injured (mildly) a few moments later......when he got into the empty locker room he took off his helmet when suddenly about half-a-dozen Ram players stormed in and mobbed the guy. He took his helmet off a little too soon!
I agree that probably wasn't pass interference, however I think the Rams would have won the game anyway. They were already at midfield and they needed only about 20 or so more yards to get into Mike Lansford's range. With Everett, Ellard, and Anderson on the field, it would not have been difficult. Remember, Lansford was the NFL's best clutch-place kicker who was 100% in game-winning situations throughout his career.
The rams never recoved from that beat down by the niners in the nfc championship game. The phatom sack on everett, and how he missed flipper anderson in the first quarter he was wide open for easy touchdown and everett under threw him rams would have been up 10-0 but ronnie lott made a hell of a play and rest is history .
We didn't know it at the time, but this game would prove to be the last hurah for the Los Angeles Rams. The next week the got ass raped by the 49ers in the NFC Championship game. The following year is when the shit hit the fan and the Rams had an abysmal 5-11 season, followed by 8 more abysmal seasons before winning the Super Bowl in 1999, by that time they weren't the L.A. Rams anymore but the St. Louis Rams.
The RAMS have owned both the Giants and The Jets throughout their history of playing each other. I remember this game well, how UCLA's Filpper just kept running through the endzone to the locker room. Flipper was a solid RAMS player up there with their best receivers ever. Great win
Mark Collins was a goat against Jerry Rice once (with Kenny hill) in 1988. Jerry Rice has been qouted as saying that Collins was the toughest corner he played against. Marc Collins was an underrated corner. He would lock down anyone.
@MrAudacity11 I disagree. The Rams defense stifled the Giants all afternoon (much like they did in their regular season game that year). When the going got tough late in the game, the Rams never gave up. They wanted it more. And Collins did grab Anderson's sleave before the ball got there which is technically interference. Now, maybe most officials wouldn't have called it, but the refs were certaintly within their right to throw the flag.
@GeorgiaKev Watch the play in slo-mo, it wasn't even close. Sheldon White doesn't even have his hand on the guy. He's diving with the receiver for the ball. It's a call that any ref should be ashamed of calling in the regular season, let alone in overtime in the playoffs. The bottom line is, it doesn't matter. Neither team will be remember for anything they did in '89.
@MrAudacity11 Collins' right hand was on the top part of Anderson's arm and he did pull his shoulder back. The ref was standing right there and was in a perfect position to see it. Yes, it was very, very technical, and I don't think it should've been called. However, I think the Rams would have won anyway since they already had a 1st down at midfield and needed maybe 20 more yards to get into Lansford's range. Everett and his receivers would have gotten that without too much trouble.
This wasn't the NFC Championship game Rams fan. This was the 1989 NFC Divisional Playoff game. All Rams fan know what happened the next week in SF? 30-3 ass kicking that sent the Rams into the dark ages until 1999!!! LOL!!!
@madrecka The Rams were so banged up by that point they had to hire a former defensive player who was actually doing real estate just so they could cover the position. I wished the Rams woulda ran it in the end zone when Warner and Bruce torched them that first game in 1999. Then began the dark ages for the Niners!!! LOL!!!
@TheTruthAboutFloyd The difference Rams fan is that 49ers had a dynasty going back when they clobbered your Rams 30-3, they were on their way to win their 4th of 5 Super Bowls in their dynasty run.
Don't make excuses like the Rams were banged up; so what? Your team plays the game and you either win or lose.
Super Bowl ring count: 49ers 5, Rams 1. Your team is 4 rings short!
@madrecka This is why we despise 49er fans. Just a bunch of uppity no-class sports. And ya'll had a dynasty because of secret payoffs and shenanigans to keep all that talent under the salary cap.
@TheTruthAboutFloyd The Rams owners were the problem from the especially Fronterie who moved the team from L.A. to St. Louis. Plus the Rams had their chances from the 1970s but they couldn't get passed the Vikings and Cowboys; the 1980s the 49ers, Bears, Vikings,Redskins and Cowboys; the 1990s they were dead until '99 where they won their Super Bowl and they deserved it. In '87 they trade Dickerson to Indy. Don't hate because SF were a dynasty and your Rams weren't.
@madrecka Why do you gotta sound like suck a prick when you make your arguments. It just kills any interest I'd wanna have re: conversation. You just make yourself, the fans, and the 49ers look bad. Peace out
@TheTruthAboutFloyd I'm stating facts not fiction. I stated the truth that your team was the best in 1999 and they deserved to win the Super Bowl right? But I'm being a prick? Its ok. I know that you football too personal. Its just a game yo. I don't make anyone look bad by making true statements. Its just the its hard to take the truth when you and other Rams fans compare your team and its accomplishments against the 49ers.
My Dad was really good friends with Flipper Anderson. His real name is William, but Flip's grandmother said he cried like a dolphin ever since he was a little kid, hence, Flipper was born. My Dad said he'll never forget this day.
This was the third consecutive late-season win for the Rams in the Northeast. They went to Foxboro and held off the Patriots 24-20 on Christmas Eve; then to Philadelphia where they defeated the Eagles 21-7 in a Wild-Card Playoff on New Year's Eve; and this one at the Meadowlands a week later. Now who says cross-country travel and a transition from warm to cold weather wears down a team?
Wasn't the NFC Title game. It was the '89 Divisional Playoff. We had a great team that year. We would have beaten SF and this bullshit happens. I was 10 years old and couldn't move for 30 minutes afterward.
Bill Parcells said that this Giants team was the best he EVER coached, he further stated they were even better then both Super Bowl teams he coached...Giant fans like myself despite winning 2 super bowls and appearing in another still cringe at the name Flipper Anderson....P.S THAT WAS NOT PASS INTERFERENCE
Probably the best win of the 1980's for the LA Rams. I'm not counting the '79 NFC Championship, even if it was technically in 1980. To go into Jersey and beat the Giants was more impressive than the '85 Div playoff against a smoke and mirrors Dallas team IMHO. 1989 was the San Francisco Invitational anyway...no team was beating that 49er squad
