I looked up the tabs and everyone has it as Em, G, Em, Bm, Em, A11, Em. But watching this video it doesn't look like He's playing a B minor because it's not barred. Is this band nazi or is it just an artistic camouflage for quite diffrent ideas? Why do they use this nazi symbols? What is the true meaning? Or maybe it was meant to remain a mystery?
@piiglumps I think is just to piss off people, I mean, there are fascist and nazi stuff all around the DIJ albums, but it never gets to the point of being straight nazi, that's why they call it cryptofa. So, it's enough nazi to piss people off, but not nazi enough to accuse them of being nazis.
@occulis Are you sure the name "Death In June" doesn't refer to something a bit more innocent, like the short story collection "Death In Mid-Summer" by Yukio Mishima? Since the official Death In June webpage devotes some space to Mishima I'd imagine the band name is a bit of an homage?
The name Death In June is a mondegreen, Douglas P once misheard Patrick Leagas in the studio and heard whatever he said as "Death in June", and settled on that as the name for the band.
@scarsaroundthehead Ernst Roehm was actually more Socialists leaning rather than Fascist, it's why he got "offed" during the Night of the Long Knives.
Why do people always have to talk about the political or religious beliefs of a musician?. I think those subjects are nothing compared to the music of Douglas P. The guy's a genius.

You wrote that you find my opinions on the Ernst Röhm thing disgusting.
You're sure realising the fact we are talking about a so called human being who likes SS logos, dresses up in WW2 uniforms and puts hakenkreuze on his record covers?
Well, probably no-one will ever know for certain, and it doesn't really matter anyway. I did remember that thing about the German releases, when he explained the meanings of the songs to German officials in order to legalize selling them in Germany but he never bothered taking them to court because of the money I think. Anyway, it's all speculation.
Guess you're right on this and nope it doesnt matter. What i am quite sure about - he really likes to provoke and he is quite clever in blurring his real thoughts about it all.
About the blur - i guess this is a problem all neofolk bands have - too much imagery and thoughts which were used during some very dark years of the 20th century.
You spoke about an interview - is there any source? I couldnt find it, would like to check out what he said. Ahm did you notice the comment of Rawlinson18?
Could everyone please shut the fuck up? He is NOT a Nazi, which if you are interested in his work you should know by now, and who gives a fuck if he's gay, and that doesn't stop you from being a fascist prick either.
"Are you a nazi"? "Don't worry about it mate" This conversation took place at the Royal in Guildford in the early eighties so there you go make of it what you will, it's impact, it's art. My accompliace asked the question not me and i thought he was a cunt for doing it.
sorry, he's not a nazi, he's provoking. there are more dangerous bands in germany. in GB they're playing with shocking symbols (that's not okay, but it's not forbidden there).
Although it might be very strange from a modern point of view that being gay and nazi go together, it obviously worked for Röhm and does also for Douglas Pearce.
Whoever now wants to state that he is not a nazi - i'd like to discuss it but you surely have a bad hand here.
Btw - excuse me if i might sound kiddish and very young which i am not but i'd like to throw a little FUCK YOU BROWN SEED' into the room to make things very clear here ;)
Röhm is -the- big archetype for Douglas P. Röhm was homosexual, a militant SA soldier and one of the biggest foes of Adolf Hitler. Nevertheless he was a nazi, and he was ne of the most important ones during the early years of Hitlers takeover.
This is how Douglas sees himself, as a successor of Ernst Röhm. Homosexual, a nazi, the mind twisted and full of caveats.
- Tony Wakeford + Patrick Leagas left because they did not want to deal with fascism
- The DIJ logo is the 3rd reich's SS skull
- DIJ published a Brown book LP with a 'Horst Wessel Lied' on it
- The cover of Sun Dogs shows a swastika
- The band likes to dress up like SS soldiers and wear german steel helmets
- DIJ explained to have found their future perspective in a nationalistic bolcevism in an interview and mentioned Röhm and Strasser during the interview
- the name Death In June being a reminiscence (Douglas P. mentioned Ernst Röhm several often. He was said to try to putsch against Hitler. Röhm got sentenced in Munich on 30th of Juni 1934 by order of Hitler and was shot later on. Douglas P. talked about what had been if he had been successful with his putsch although it's not even 100% clear that he was up to raise against Hitler)
- Ernst Röhm as an archetype for Douglas P. (imho it's obvious but that's my personal opinion)
Your opinions on the Ernst Röhm thing are disgusting, and I remember seeing an interview with Douglas P. somewhere in which he denied being a Nazi, and then said something like "what's ironic is I've probably read more of the Communist Manifesto than I have of Mien Kampf.", I can't find it though, which is annoying.
They explained that they searched for a political perspective for the future and found them in the 'nationalistic bolshevism' which also was very popular in the rows of the 3rd Reich's SA. They mentioned that they came across people like Gregor Strasser and Ernst Röhm, which later on were known as 2nd revolutionaries, as said both were highly ranked SA members.
The name Death In June is a reminiscence to the death of SA leader Ernst Röhm and other highly ranked SA people who were sentenced to death in 1934. The band's logo is the skull of the third's reich SS. DI6 published an LP called 'The Brown Book' which contained the 'Horst Wessel Lied', the hymn of the NSDAP. The cover of the 'Sun Dogs' vinyl shows a swastika made of a rose and 4 dogs assembled to a hakenkreuz. The band likes to dress up like SS soldiers and wear old german steel helmets.
Patrick Leagas (Patrick O'Kill), a founder of Di6, left the band due to it's fascistic designs and later formed SixthComm. Tony Wakeford left DI6 because he said he wanted to get rid of the right scene, he later founded Sol Invictus.
Pearce and Wakeford were interviewed after the end of Crisis. During this, they said they were disappointed of the left scene and stated they were 'studying history'.
DIJ is just a scapegoat to these ARA fascists who've got nothing better to do, when they should be going against real neo-nazi's like the stormfront scum...
Yes, Von Thronstahl is more or less outspoken "fascists" or something in that direction. Many people seem to like Death In June but are either "afraid" of listening to them because of thier "image" and/or that the lyrics are very intellectual and people tend to take the lyrics to litterarly without reflecting over them, but as soon as one clarifies that Douglas is a homosexuall people seem to loosen up and learn to enjoy the music.
Well, I can enjoy fascist music, even though I personally find fascism obsolete in the modern world. It's not like I would adopt ones believes, only because I listen to ones music. As for Nazism and Homosexuality, those aren't mutually exclusive.
Exactly, I listen to what I find good, either musicially or lyrically. All music that apeal to me whatever the message is. No, they're not incompatible, but I was trying to prove how absurd some people reason; "I find Death In June fascist, but Douglas P is a homosexual, therefore I am no longer offended by the lyrical content" - Some people seem to be thinking that way.
@OthalWarrior I also found it a bit interesting that so many people jump on DI6's "Nazi" imagery and symbolism, yet the symbols they use (like so many others) have had varied meanings throughout history. I don't believe they have used any sort of symbolism that could be tied into a pro-Nazi category. A vast majority of symbols have had different meanings throughout the years. Take the peace sigh, for example. Once upon a time, it was used as an insignia on one of Hitler's tank battalions.
True true, while there are outspoken Fascist/Nazi neofolk bands like Von Thronstall, people who generalize all neofolk and related music as Nazi/Racist/Fascist just don't understand...
No. Douglas Pierce is not a Nazi. Hell; he was in Crisis, a punk band that played at anti-racism rallies. Besides; Douglas P is a homosexual. Because of that, I doubt he'd make a very good nazi :P
@Clockworkz some people prefer to believe the prejudices against those bands, instead they inform about Neofolk, this kind of music has nothing to do with national socialism
@Clockworkz Regardless of whether or not he was a Nazi, your knowledge of the Nazi's is not very accurate. There was a huge occult abnd homosexual segment of the highest ranking Nazi's. I suggest youi learn your history proper befiore making such ignorant and off base claims.
The guy is showing the absurdity of the Nazi idea - how can he be a Nazi? Just take the following contradiction :
"...I want you to live by the justice code
I want you to burn down freedom's road.."
vs :
"...Little black angel I feel so glad
You'll never have things I never had..."
If he was a Nazi he would do anything to hide this inborn utter contradiction of any regime & religion (including Fascism, Socialism, Capitalism - all ISMs, typical modern religions :-)).
It's sad when such puss-brain ignorant little turds accuse this band of fascism and racism. Maybe if you learned how to interpret lyrics you'd realize there's so much more going on in these songs than what seems obvious. Douglas Pearce is a musical and artistic genius. Bow down.

I did remember that thing about the German releases, when he explained the meanings of the songs to German officials in order to legalize selling them in Germany but he never bothered taking them to court because of the money I think. Anyway, it's all speculation.
ignoranttwat 1 year ago
Guess you're right on this and nope it doesnt matter. What i am quite sure about - he really likes to provoke and he is quite clever in blurring his real thoughts about it all.
About the blur - i guess this is a problem all neofolk bands have - too much imagery and thoughts which were used during some very dark years of the 20th century.

@ignoranttwat
You spoke about an interview - is there any source? I couldnt find it, would like to check out what he said. Ahm did you notice the comment of Rawlinson18?
Q: "Are you a nazi?"
DP: "Don't worry about it mate"
Is it this quote you meant?

@ignoranttwat
Your name is well chosen and i am sure it's not without reason ;)

Could everyone please shut the fuck up? He is NOT a Nazi, which if you are interested in his work you should know by now, and who gives a fuck if he's gay, and that doesn't stop you from being a fascist prick either.
ignoranttwat 1 year ago
"Are you a nazi"? "Don't worry about it mate" This conversation took place at the Royal in Guildford in the early eighties so there you go make of it what you will, it's impact, it's art. My accompliace asked the question not me and i thought he was a cunt for doing it.
Rawlinson18 1 year ago
Well Joy Division used Nazi imagery, too. Its obvious DIJ borrowed the nazi imagery from Joy Division.
Ryanyarb24 1 year ago
sorry, he's not a nazi, he's provoking. there are more dangerous bands in germany. in GB they're playing with shocking symbols (that's not okay, but it's not forbidden there).

thrashermotherfucker 2 years ago
Although it might be very strange from a modern point of view that being gay and nazi go together, it obviously worked for Röhm and does also for Douglas Pearce.
Whoever now wants to state that he is not a nazi - i'd like to discuss it but you surely have a bad hand here.
Btw - excuse me if i might sound kiddish and very young which i am not but i'd like to throw a little FUCK YOU BROWN SEED' into the room to make things very clear here ;)
fritzo62 2 years ago
Röhm is -the- big archetype for Douglas P. Röhm was homosexual, a militant SA soldier and one of the biggest foes of Adolf Hitler. Nevertheless he was a nazi, and he was ne of the most important ones during the early years of Hitlers takeover.
This is how Douglas sees himself, as a successor of Ernst Röhm. Homosexual, a nazi, the mind twisted and full of caveats.
fritzo62 2 years ago
@fritzo62
That's ridiculous. You are proof that knowledge≠intelligence.
ignoranttwat 1 year ago
Facts:
- Tony Wakeford + Patrick Leagas left because they did not want to deal with fascism
- The DIJ logo is the 3rd reich's SS skull
- DIJ published a Brown book LP with a 'Horst Wessel Lied' on it
- The cover of Sun Dogs shows a swastika
- The band likes to dress up like SS soldiers and wear german steel helmets
- DIJ explained to have found their future perspective in a nationalistic bolcevism in an interview and mentioned Röhm and Strasser during the interview
fritzo62 1 year ago
Conclusions:
- the name Death In June being a reminiscence (Douglas P. mentioned Ernst Röhm several often. He was said to try to putsch against Hitler. Röhm got sentenced in Munich on 30th of Juni 1934 by order of Hitler and was shot later on. Douglas P. talked about what had been if he had been successful with his putsch although it's not even 100% clear that he was up to raise against Hitler)
- Ernst Röhm as an archetype for Douglas P. (imho it's obvious but that's my personal opinion)
fritzo62 1 year ago
@fritzo62
Your opinions on the Ernst Röhm thing are disgusting, and I remember seeing an interview with Douglas P. somewhere in which he denied being a Nazi, and then said something like "what's ironic is I've probably read more of the Communist Manifesto than I have of Mien Kampf.", I can't find it though, which is annoying.
ignoranttwat 1 year ago
@ignoranttwat
I dont wonder that he said something like that. I only wonder how he meant it. There are 2 alternatives:
- either the irony is within the way he is seen by people which would left him completely misunderstood
- or he laughs about himself, because he had been (or at least was called) a leftist once, and now is the complete opposite
I wonder why you're so aghast that people like me think he is a nazi. He now deals with nazi symbols and ideology for many years - is it so far away?

They explained that they searched for a political perspective for the future and found them in the 'nationalistic bolshevism' which also was very popular in the rows of the 3rd Reich's SA. They mentioned that they came across people like Gregor Strasser and Ernst Röhm, which later on were known as 2nd revolutionaries, as said both were highly ranked SA members.
fritzo62 2 years ago
The name Death In June is a reminiscence to the death of SA leader Ernst Röhm and other highly ranked SA people who were sentenced to death in 1934. The band's logo is the skull of the third's reich SS. DI6 published an LP called 'The Brown Book' which contained the 'Horst Wessel Lied', the hymn of the NSDAP. The cover of the 'Sun Dogs' vinyl shows a swastika made of a rose and 4 dogs assembled to a hakenkreuz. The band likes to dress up like SS soldiers and wear old german steel helmets.
fritzo62 2 years ago
Patrick Leagas (Patrick O'Kill), a founder of Di6, left the band due to it's fascistic designs and later formed SixthComm. Tony Wakeford left DI6 because he said he wanted to get rid of the right scene, he later founded Sol Invictus.
Pearce and Wakeford were interviewed after the end of Crisis. During this, they said they were disappointed of the left scene and stated they were 'studying history'.

He is not, many Neofolk bands take on a image of various Axis-themes.
OthalWarrior 2 years ago
No he is not, many neofolk bands take on various Axis-themes, just look at bans like Von Thronstahl, Der Blutharsch etc.
OthalWarrior 2 years ago
@OthalWarrior
Well, VT, or at least their head JayKay clearly is at least heavily influenced by National Socialism
dasWombat01 2 years ago
Yes, Von Thronstahl is more or less outspoken "fascists" or something in that direction. Many people seem to like Death In June but are either "afraid" of listening to them because of thier "image" and/or that the lyrics are very intellectual and people tend to take the lyrics to litterarly without reflecting over them, but as soon as one clarifies that Douglas is a homosexuall people seem to loosen up and learn to enjoy the music.
OthalWarrior 2 years ago 6
@OthalWarrior
Well, I can enjoy fascist music, even though I personally find fascism obsolete in the modern world. It's not like I would adopt ones believes, only because I listen to ones music. As for Nazism and Homosexuality, those aren't mutually exclusive.
dasWombat01 2 years ago 2
Exactly, I listen to what I find good, either musicially or lyrically. All music that apeal to me whatever the message is. No, they're not incompatible, but I was trying to prove how absurd some people reason; "I find Death In June fascist, but Douglas P is a homosexual, therefore I am no longer offended by the lyrical content" - Some people seem to be thinking that way.
OthalWarrior 2 years ago
Wich is incredibly stupid. Glad that there's another intelligent being on the web, those tend to become less in numbers.
dasWombat01 2 years ago
@OthalWarrior I also found it a bit interesting that so many people jump on DI6's "Nazi" imagery and symbolism, yet the symbols they use (like so many others) have had varied meanings throughout history. I don't believe they have used any sort of symbolism that could be tied into a pro-Nazi category. A vast majority of symbols have had different meanings throughout the years. Take the peace sigh, for example. Once upon a time, it was used as an insignia on one of Hitler's tank battalions.
TheMinesofNarshe 1 year ago
@OthalWarrior
True true, while there are outspoken Fascist/Nazi neofolk bands like Von Thronstall, people who generalize all neofolk and related music as Nazi/Racist/Fascist just don't understand...
Heavymetalgamer28 1 year ago
No. Douglas Pierce is not a Nazi. Hell; he was in Crisis, a punk band that played at anti-racism rallies. Besides; Douglas P is a homosexual. Because of that, I doubt he'd make a very good nazi :P

@Clockworkz Regardless of whether or not he was a Nazi, your knowledge of the Nazi's is not very accurate. There was a huge occult abnd homosexual segment of the highest ranking Nazi's. I suggest youi learn your history proper befiore making such ignorant and off base claims.

@malanoce The Nazis were vehemently anti-gay though, at least once Hitler took full power in Germany. Just ask Ernst Rohm...
Thornfox 1 year ago
The guy is showing the absurdity of the Nazi idea - how can he be a Nazi? Just take the following contradiction :
"...I want you to live by the justice code
I want you to burn down freedom's road.."
vs :
"...Little black angel I feel so glad
You'll never have things I never had..."
If he was a Nazi he would do anything to hide this inborn utter contradiction of any regime & religion (including Fascism, Socialism, Capitalism - all ISMs, typical modern religions :-)).

Douglas himself said that this song is about an adopted African boy living in a 19th century English village. He ended up killing his foster parents.
888Vomitorius888 2 years ago
Actually, it's based on a song cult leader Jim Jones wrote for his black adopted son. "He's Disabled" also is based on a song by Jones. Look it up.
