George Ayittey is a piece of work. He says, in a loud,, “We in Africa are fed up with these dictators. Fed up, fed up!” . The dictators must be defeated from within. Opposition groups should unite. The force of dictatorship requires the counterforce of democratic opposition.  Oh, is he fun, Ayittey is, and he’s also fearless, bracing, and valuable. Listening to him is like getting a bucket of cold water in the face, and healthful water, too.

Ayittey's recommendations together w/the non-violent methods of Gene Sharp can rid a dictator. But as Ayittey states, the dictatorship must be removed. However, I think he is shortsighted when he pushes 4 "democracy", which is not the reasoned endpoint of the "intellectual reform" he correctly sees as necessary. Rule by the majority is still rule.
