The vault shown in the video is not a groin vault, it is a GOTHIC POINTED ARCH vaulting. On top of this, it shows a buttress on the same slide! That is GOTHIC not Romanesque!

Be careful, this will mis-lead those who watch! Please use earlier cathedral work if you wish to study Romanesque !

@mattypsychosupreme Which vault are you referring to? The Speyer vaults are groin vaults, dating to the eleventh century (restored 1778). This was the only slide I could see where this mistake could be made, because of the angle of the ceiling shot. They are definitely NOT pointed. Speyer is not well represented online, but there are plenty of books and articles on the church available through your local library.

You use photos of Caen Cathedral, which is covered in flying buttresses. This is most certainly Gothic.

I am referring to the slide at 1:20 in particular.

@mattypsychosupreme The buttresses were indeed added during the Gothic period when the nave was remodeled. You can see both Gothic and Romanesque vaults in the view provided. The sectional shows the vault is not a pointed arch vault, but a barrel groin vault (sexpartite).

Caen is a pretty standard example of Romanesque architecture, and the one used in my students' textbook. Note teh Romanesque sexpartite groin vaults toward the back of the slide (as opposed to the front, which shows the Gothic remodeling; I felt those were obscured enough to be used, and it is difficult to find a shot that excludes them).

@elloraluna Looking at the shot carefully, the Gothic vaults are indeed fully obscured. What you see are the Romanesque sexpartite vaults of the main nave, and they are definitely NOT pointed.

Part of the point of this college-level introduction is to introduce appropriate and precise vocabulary.
