Nice video. As a fire chief in the arid west, I imagine they have a limited water supply and are reserving their water in case the forest lights off. The structure is not savable. It would be very unsafe to put crews inside or on that building with slurry drops being done. Being aggressive is one thing, but developing a strategy and sticking to it is another.
Tanker pilots in Nor-Cal are really good shots too. But i never knew any agency used tankers on structure fires. I was told by a firefighter they don't do that.
What i don't get is why all those firefighters were standing around letting the structure burn. The camera man was even bitching about how they aren't doing anything.
Cal Fire will send a full wildland dispatch i.e. aircraft, to a structure fire in the state responsibility area if it is threatening to spread to the wildland as this fire is. and if you pay close attention they are actually hitting the trees that are torching off, thus keeping it from spreading to the wildland.
@geterdonein01 it was because they didn't a a sufficient water supply at the time. If the camera guy continued recording a little longer you would have seen the half a dozen hose lines on the side as well as a monitor.
@ prwkbrder...Having worked for CAL FIRE for some time now, I'm willing to bet that the ATGS officer in the air attack and the tanker pilots who are very highly trained, would not have dropped on the roof, with people on it. The drop appears to be made to prevent the fire from spreading into the vegetation as opposed to actual direct attack on the structure itself. Hope this alleviates any concerns you may have had.
awesome air drop by cal fire cal fire is usually more aggressive in my dept. we are beyond aggressive and over emphasize especially when it comes to structure fires
Wow, that was insane. Cool video. I've never even heard of them doing structure protection in a populated area. It's one thing if it happens to be on a line they're constructing. By the way... if you like Cal Fire's S-2s... check out a video from an outing my buddy and I went on 2 days ago... we got some great footage. Search for "Cottonwood Fire Day 2" and it should be the first hit. User name envenomator1.
