Saying Carrick is a bad defensive midfielder (that's what he is) because he doesn't score or assist much is like saying Rooney is a bad forward because he doesn't make many goal saving tackles or make many covering runs when the full-backs are caught out of position.

he changed from a central midfielder who had hargreaves behind him and scholes next to him, to our most defensive central midfielder. so when our fullbacks both bomb forward and its only carrick sitting in front of the centre backs, you expect carrick to play "killer" passes where we could lose the ball? are you mad? what happens if the ball is intercepted? then it is just carrick and the two centre halves trying to stop a counter attack. good thinking.
Spot on. Most fans don't use their noggins at all it seems. Unless a player is attacking, shooting, spraying killer passes all day long or making explosive tackles, they don't seem to notice.
@mattos000 i expect him to be more brave about his passing like he used to do, passing 20-30 yards forward (not killer pass) n that automatically cancels out 4 midfield players in a deep lying playmaker role... i really dont know what happened to him
Sometimes it's the poor movement ahead that makes a player not play a pass forward.. Sometimes it's the quality of player alongside him and how they work with each other and how they move off the ball that determines the quality of play.
It was no problem with Scholes alongside him, now he has Fletcher.. No problem with Ronaldo out wide, now he has Valencia.. You see the difference, it's fucking collosal.
Yeah, early days on Cleverley, trying not to get carried away, but he looks pretty good.. Has all the attributes you want in the centre, quick-thinking, lively, snappy passer of the ball.. Good awareness of his teammates and all that..
When we play 2 in the centre, we can get overrun though, it's essential that we have defensively aware players in there.. Anderson is just too poor in that area. Pity because he can be a dynamic figure in the centre. : (
And also I think it's stretching it to say Cleverley proved he can play with anyone. He's played like 6-7 games for the club, and all but 1 or 2 were with Anderson.. and you don't prove much over the course of a few games like that.. He hasn't played with Carrick or Giggs at all. The true test of how compatible he is will show over the course of a full season, and the consistency he shows in that time.
