Godding Federer Syndrome!! Del Potro won that game playing always backcourt style, getting the balls as higher as possible, putting weight and spin on the ball, running like a maniac. No one can play always with slices all the game, who decides how high want to hit the ball is always the player, getting a backcourt position to get the ball in a high level. Because of this, a player like federer plays near the baseline and nadal further back from the baseline.
something ive noticed about rafas game as of late. He is becoming extremely offencive now days especially on the return. Hes been hugging the baseline or somewhere close to it instead of his typical hanging back on serve jsut to get the ball back with a bunch of top spin. Though his old style is effective we are seeing rafa evolve into a more modern player but i honestly think that rafas old style was more successfull
fed didnt make the big points period. he did them in so many finals before.like this years wimby. he was lucky there. in this one a little bit unlucky, but it was a great final.and a well deserved win for delpo. fed played 4 major finals 2009 lost 2 in 5!!!so consistent so impressive. he demonstrated he is the one too beat thats why delpos win weights so much more..he dethroned a tru champ like nadal did in 2008 wimby..
the only scenario missing here is federer losing his mind to an overrule, making a ridiculous amount of unforced errors and having a terrible day with his serve... But del potro played great.
I think you're right. Federer lost to Federer. Roger lost focus in the game. He has a lot of unforced errors in the game. Double faults of Roger helped Del Potro win also. I think Del Potro is not that good enough to beat Roger Federer if Roger is on his 100% condition physically and mentally.
I think those arguments aren't too valid, I mean, if Fed lost focus in the game, that's because of the opponent he had in front of him. Federer is not playing alone against the wall. Federer lost, Del Potro won.. deal with it!
@ralphociravla you are a total idiot. I don't even know what to say. Federer made errors because Delpo didn't give give him enough room to breath. Half of those so called unforced errors were mentally forced errors. Fed had to go for more because he could not afford to let Delpo hit a good forehand. I guess you only admit Fed lose when he made 70 winners right?
Well it seems as if mostly everybody is wanting to give del potro a lot of credit here and perhaps justly so. I still think federer should have won the match. He served below par and through tactics out of the window after the 2nd/3rd set.
My feeling is that he really wanted to cruise through the match and didn't have the fighting heart in this match that he showed at the FO and Wimbledon.
My guess is that he was tired, he has done so much this year. I hope he wins ther USO again
So Federer didn't lost to Federer after all. I believe Delpo actualy won. But like you, everyone believed that no way Fed was going to lose. Including me and the Argentinians (except maybe people from Tandil). But Fed lost, and everyone was happy. What crazy sport, huh?
It is wonderful to have a new young GS champion on the tour.
Will,You seems to be a diehard fan of FED.Ofcourse everybody is FED's fan.You underestimated DELPO.I liked your analysis,But its more like a theory. which doesnt cover human emotions.DELPO mentally crippled FED with his hard hitting forehand.Interesting part of the match is DELPO slowing down his serve.I think that played a key part in winning the match even though initially it looked to backfire.DELPO not only played great game but made oncourt adjustments whenvr needed
Hey. You're right -- I did underestimate DelPo. I said as much in a subsequent video, which you can find in our channel.
I disagree that DelPo got in Federer's head. Don't think Federer's mindset had much to do with the match.
Rather, I think it was DelPo who became mentally stronger the longer the match wore on -- his mental toughness allowed him to recover after double faulting twice to lose the third set.
I actually think it was a bit of both his mental toughness getting to Federer and Fed being tired. He just kept chipping away and never losing heart which perhaps Roger wasn't expecting. After all, all previous GS final virgins surrendered rather meekly to him (Djokovic 07, Murray 08) But Fed did say after that he wasn't moving as well. Btw, I really enjoy these videos! Very informative and educational, i look out for the things you point out. Predictions don't matter really, keep it up!
Will, didn't you see Fed unravel on that overule? He was swearing at the Chair Umpire.I've never seen him come unglued like that before.Of course his mental state came into play.He allowed himself to get totally distracted right out of the match.I can't believe you don't see that.
i don't agree with you on the same, in th 3rd set when fed was swearing at the chair umpire, saying not so good things....even the commentator were shocked as delpo was listening to all of this...and next thing he lost the set with 2 DF...it wasnt the fed that got distracted...it was delpo...
and then he recovered...rest of the 2 set...fed was just trying to whether the storm...by the mid of 4th set it was clear that delpo is gonna win...he become mentally stronger and uplift his game...
Hi, i've been watching a lot of your videos and enjoying it a lot.
Im a big Roger Fan and i had the same impressions. Nadal lost because of Top Spinned balls in the middle, which Del Po could just hit up/down with huge pace, and Federer would slice Del Po all the time. But Federer stopped "slicing" after 1st set, you noticed that also?
Besides Serving horribly, and playing irregular, federer avoiding the slice i think was the key for his loss :P
I've not read all the comments, but come on... This tournament was very irregular by Federer. He played lousy against Hewitt, then showed his amazing genius against Soderling (first two sets), he was mediocre at best against Djokovic (with the exception of the tiebreak and the last games of the second and third set), and yesterday he was just pathetic once he lost his advantage. This must have been one of his worst performances in a slam since 2003, and the worst since the FO 2008 final.
It´s true, the BH is not as flashy as his FH, but is much more consistent, he almost never makes mistakes with it, and he uses it to provoke returns to his FH.....the he unleashes hell! :)
the good: La Torre de Tandil coming thru in big, huge moments. great mental toughness and the execution was just as beautiful.
the bad: fed didn't play great but didn't play terrible either. The dwarf just didn't let him play like he wanted to. but the bad is definitely fed's mental breakdown. bottomline, he choked. he was playing scared toward the end.
the terrible: dick is a dick. first latin american to win in 30+ years and delPo almost didn't get a chance to thank his supporters. Shameful.
absolutely disgusting ceremony that displayed the USTA's desperateness to attract the youth of america, "1.6 million" this, "lexus" that, all Juan Martin wanted to do was thank his support team and he barely got an opportunity due to the USTA getting on their knees to materialistic americans, sad to watch
I put 100 bucks on Del Potro and i won 15 times the money!!! I know this guy would win, I don´t know why but I had strange feeling and it was the right one!!
so how do you feel being so wrong on this , eheh.. Bet you never imagined Del Po would win, even on the last set.
Federer is full of himself and when the umpire told him to be quiet, he completly lost it. And he got tired very soon, especially after losing that 4th set, he was all over in his mind, all those frame shots told a lot about his state of mind at the last set. Del Po with 20 yo was more mature than the great champion RF.. It was excelent
beautiful story, great hard tennis. She really rips those shots and i eard she plays with 30 kg tension on her strings wich makes even harder to hits with that pace... fantastic
federer serve really bad, 12 or 11, double faults, started throwing high balls to the middle, and del potro started playin better.. he couldnt keep his slice low enough, hitting the ball of center lots of times, gotta give credit to del potro on really atacking those second serves. he got some crazy returns.
As an American, I was ashamed how Dick Enburg would not let the champion get a word in edge wise during the awards presentation. Juan had to ask several times to say a couple words in Spanish to his home croud. The USTA was more concerned about corporate sponsors and blowing their own horn. it was a disgrace.
well explained. but Fed did that tactics only in the first two sets (slicing onto the backhand but then he startedto play more topspin backhands and he seemed as if he wanted to measure in a real shootout with Delpo´s power, so he played topspin backhands and fired a lot of shots onto Delpo´s forehand, which was simply deadly on that monday. Together with his unusual weak serve, Delpo´s fight-till-death attitude and power forehand, this wrong tactics decided over his defeat.

de un momento a otro por haber tenido una buena semana,no vengan aqui los chanchos atrgentinos prepotentes a decir que del orto es el mejor,,,un respeto a los que llevan tiempo por encima de el.NADAL Y FEDERER
Yes, Federer definitely was not playing his best, but neither was Delpo. heheh, iIt would have been an even better match if they had both been making less errors.
Che, pedazo de ignorante, ¿y vos quién sos, de dónde saliste? La única palabra para definirte es ESTUPIDO. Porque acusas algo que no paso, y ademas de eso, insultas sin ningun motivo, más que la envidia. Pura envidia.
With all credit to Delpo, I would pressume that Fed might have underestimated the demanding and tiring "work" of a caring father, meaning: short nights, a lot distraction from "more important" tennis, perhaps a lack of motivation. He seemed outpowerd at the end. Quite unusual.
However, Delpo reported ´how badly he indeed had slept in the night before, you could see that in the first 1 1/2 sets.
murray's game is actually well suited to Del potro's game. The only thing that Del potro can actually attack comfortably is his second serve and the loopy forehands that Murray does a lot. murray uses the slice a lot against almost every opponent. Save maybe for Wawrinka who doesn't seem bothered as much when sliced to his backhand.
If only Federer hadn't abandoned the backhand slice and tried to hit through Del Potro, he could have won the match fairly comfortably... oh well, congratulations to Del Potro, he played a great match and didn't choke like so many other first-time slam finalists.
It's funny this match was all about taking it to the ground strokes. That's where this match was fought and won by Del Potro. He abandoned his heavy flat serve for most of the match because he sensed he could beat Roger on the ground. With neither player venturing to the net much, Del Potro did just that. He can beat anybody today, let alone next year.
It wasn't just the serve that was the problem. The footwork was not as good, and that's unusual for Fed. Plus Del Potrowas executing a similar strategy from Safin - deep flat penetrating strokes to Fed's backhand. It's the right play, and Fed can't seem to really shake him. And then there were glimpses of fed actually being a bit tired which may have resulted in the slightly poor footwork.
Unlike your prediction Roger did not beat himself. Although he played less than his best he was truly beaten by Del Potro. Your analysis is fairly sound. However, you underestimated the effectiveness of Del Potros forehand and how it deeply penetrated the baseline, where Roger was unable to control the game. A stunning match to watch. I enjoyed it immensely.
Now what do you think dude? I was talking to some friends and I said I saw a big chance for del Potro to win, everybody laughed... As you said, he didn't beat Nadal because of his abdominal injury, he won because his forehand and serving shots were a bazzooka my friend. Del Potro is the sh***! I'm Latinamerican, and I don't like argentineans too much, but I recognize this guy is awsome.
roger has so good first serve, and that is the main reason why he is the no 1. last night it wasn't good with his serve and he lost. his serve is the main reason why he is so dominant on wimbledon. when he doesn't serve well there are 5-6 player that can win him.
Just found this video. I wouldn't say the person is biased. He cleared stated that Roger would be the one to lose the match if Roger lost focus. That's exactly what happened.
I agree with the guies who says Delpo is the thing.
I think his purified technics will be reconized. He makes shot really looks easy and confident.
My idea is that Fed is too good to pull out his finger sometimes and close the match. He should have won 2nd set. Happend in the second final in french open against Nadal at 22 after taking 1st set 61 o 62.
So Federer was going to win in 4, probably 3 straight sets? So Federer was going to win a lot of points with his serve? So it wasn´t Del Potro´s year? No doubt this chap is just a Federer fan, nothing more.
The best final would have been Del Potro-Djokovic. Federer was very lucky to win Djokovic (7-6,7-5,7-5) and I think Djokovic had the same chances against Federer as Del Potro had in the final, but missed to concentrate and finish when he had break chances. Curiously, Federer made the same mistakes against Del Potro, as Novak did against Roger in the semifinal. Still, even if he lost yesterday, ROGER IS THE KING of tennis!!!!!!
Agree 100%. 2 years ago I said only way to beat Rafa is hit central, flat, deep balls so not to give him an angle. Playing that way any good player (top 15) can beat him on hard. Federer always beat Del Potro the way you say, but he needs at least 60% on first serve. Yesterday he had 50% and a dozen double faults, and he lost. With a normal serve around 65% he would have won in 3 sets. He also looked tired in the end, well he's 28 and had a 20 y.o. giant opponent... Del Potro is great though.
nice analysis I also thought Fed would win in straight or 4 it's just that Delpotro played out of his mind he played like a monster out there..... and Roger's serve kinda sucked on that match coz if fed 1st serves were decent enough he could win like in paris his serve held on but this one his serves were ughh disgusting sorry....
This guy has turned from a good instructor and analyzer to nothing more than another classless Federer cheerleader and Nadal hater. Why not just analyze the match? He has absolutely no clue whether Nadal's injury affected him or not. Djokovic pulls that hands-in-the-air, what-can-I-do stuff all the time, even in matches he ends up winning. I used to love FYB, but now this guy is injecting too much of his own bias into these videos.
My prediction is that anyone who could beat Nadal could beat Federer but only if they play in the same condition. Also I don't get anyone who thinks djokovic could win more slams. On the other hand Del Potro is the real thing and my next prediction is Del Potro will win at least 4 more slams unless he encounter the weakness of all skinny tall people, lacks of stamina.
I came home from work watching the 4th set and I was like its over your prediction was a genius and Federer got his 16 GS, so I left for class, an hour later in class my friend texted me saying Fed lost 2-6 in the 5th set. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH piss me off
Very interesting analysis! I love underdogs and I really want to see a new face win these tournaments but after Federer regained his invincibility this year, I didn't give Del Potro a chance really. I left to teach a class after Del Potro took the 2nd set tie-breaker. I was happy it would at least go to four sets but quite sure Fed would get US Open #6. Well, always believe in upsets and underdogs (like Melanie Oudin's run!).
Del Potro is proving the new thing about men's tennis which is power ground strokes are leading the way. In certain cases Del Potro's athleticism and power is what killed Fed. IMO Fed is the last remaining pure skill player left, the new breed of players are strong, fast. Can you imagine a 100% Nadal vs Del Potro in the final, it would look nothing like Fed's game
Dick Enberg was really disrespectful of Del Potro. At first he didn't even want to let Juan speak. It was very unusual. The old man is losing it. It was totally classless.
Dick Emberg...i was pissed off @ that. Del Potro had to ask twice if he could say something in spanish. It was i believe the 1st time they rushed things. VERY BAD
not sure....but thats not how they usually do it...the players take their time and say what they want....i dont know why it was like that but...it was certainly the only thing that sucked bout the match...
federer served very poorly and alos also played poor i also think he choked on some points. but on the other hand del potro played an amazing game improving almost everything in his arsenal. but still federer would definitely try and have a comabck the next time they face.
fed's 1st went back to switzerland and didn't even send a post card. I think that was a fundamental issue in the defeat. What suprised me was how calmly fed took the defeat, not even a tear. Must be his new kids giving him a higher perspective, but perhaps he was still in shock aswell.
Haha, these prediction videos are always funny after seeing the actual result. No offense, Will. Thank you for making these videos and the other ones too : ) They're actually helpful.
It's more fun trying to predict the match beforehand... even if I'm sometimes wrong... OK very wrong w/my US Open picks. Serena vs Dementieva and Federer vs Nadal? Oooops.
Haha, it's ok. Everyone makes mistakes. Besides, there was probably thousands of other people who would have predicted the same, that Federer would win. I thought that might've happened, too, considering that he had a 6-0 record against del Potro and he beat him really badly at the 2009 AO 6-3, -0,6-0
Delpo played superb but Fed's serve let him down big time.
Props to Juan for overcoming the nerves of first slam, overcoming the 0-6 record vs. the King, executing his HUGE forehand and beating both Rafa and Roger in a Slam.
A slight augery overcame the most prominant of players in the US OPEN 2009. Roddick fell, Nadal Fell, Williams Sisters fell. Im not superstiuous or anything...but based on that stack of cards.. somehow I knew Federer would also fall. Interesting 2009 Open.
God, Del Potro has a huge forehand. Federer needs to stop trying to run around his backhand, because Del Potro just keeps hammering it. I hope Fed can pull out this fifth set.
5 - 4 in the third at 1 set a piece. Fed started off on fire, but since the first set he's look out of sorts. Serving poorly (41% for the match last time I checked), ball toss has been low which results in a sped up motion, footwork has been sloppy... Having said that, things are looking better now. Fed looks fired up, momentum shifting and Del Potro has just double faulted to lose the second set 4-6.
Think i'll have to sub to FYB premium as soon as i get my debit card through. I hope there is something on there to help a Juan Carlos Ferrero of old to learn when to get the hell to net. Not t put myself down or anything.
that through the leg shot wasn't that great. Djokovic clearly just gave up the last two points. I think that djokovic could have cut that shoot off. But still impressive by Fed- Express
Good analysis (and although I'm writing this long after the fact - I'm not being sarcastic.

Shameful.

absolutely disgusting ceremony that displayed the USTA's desperateness to attract the youth of america, "1.6 million" this, "lexus" that, all Juan Martin wanted to do was thank his support team and he barely got an opportunity due to the USTA getting on their knees to materialistic americans, sad to watch

so how do you feel being so wrong on this , eheh..
It was excelent

federer serve really bad, 12 or 11, double faults, started throwing high balls to the middle, and del potro started playin better.. he couldnt keep his slice low enough, hitting the ball of center lots of times, gotta give credit to del potro on really atacking those second serves. he got some crazy returns.
Fazigu 2 years ago

Congrat Delpo.

interesante lo que plantea. Ojala tenga razon y siempre sea asi para Del Potro.

I agree Fed lost because his 1st serve % was way down. That was compounded by his inability to take advantage of his break points against Del.
I would like to know why this happened. Fed looked so good in the first set and 1/2????

fed lost because delpo was better than him so don't make rubbish and childish excuses..........Delpo was the best period.

With all credit to Delpo, I would pressume that Fed might have underestimated the demanding and tiring "work" of a caring father, meaning: short nights, a lot distraction from "more important" tennis, perhaps a lack of motivation. He seemed outpowerd at the end. Quite unusual.
However, Delpo reported ´how badly he indeed had slept in the night before, you could see that in the first 1 1/2 sets.
ulizinho 2 years ago
murray's game is actually well suited to Del potro's game. The only thing that Del potro can actually attack comfortably is his second serve and the loopy forehands that Murray does a lot. murray uses the slice a lot against almost every opponent. Save maybe for Wawrinka who doesn't seem bothered as much when sliced to his backhand.
JiraiyaSama86 2 years ago
If only Federer hadn't abandoned the backhand slice and tried to hit through Del Potro, he could have won the match fairly comfortably... oh well, congratulations to Del Potro, he played a great match and didn't choke like so many other first-time slam finalists.

I think this video is good
I have a couple of questions? What do you think of Andy Murray and his game?
FAdekunle 2 years ago
It's funny this match was all about taking it to the ground strokes. That's where this match was fought and won by Del Potro. He abandoned his heavy flat serve for most of the match because he sensed he could beat Roger on the ground. With neither player venturing to the net much, Del Potro did just that. He can beat anybody today, let alone next year.
tonestar100 2 years ago
It wasn't just the serve that was the problem. The footwork was not as good, and that's unusual for Fed. Plus Del Potrowas executing a similar strategy from Safin - deep flat penetrating strokes to Fed's backhand. It's the right play, and Fed can't seem to really shake him. And then there were glimpses of fed actually being a bit tired which may have resulted in the slightly poor footwork.
JiraiyaSama86 2 years ago
Unlike your prediction Roger did not beat himself. Although he played less than his best he was truly beaten by Del Potro. Your analysis is fairly sound. However, you underestimated the effectiveness of Del Potros forehand and how it deeply penetrated the baseline, where Roger was unable to control the game. A stunning match to watch. I enjoyed it immensely.
tonestar100 2 years ago
one of the main reason that Roger lose is physical problem, 28 after a tight match has very little chance to beat 20 for just a day of rest
ductrung3993 2 years ago
Now what do you think dude? I was talking to some friends and I said I saw a big chance for del Potro to win, everybody laughed... As you said, he didn't beat Nadal because of his abdominal injury, he won because his forehand and serving shots were a bazzooka my friend. Del Potro is the sh***! I'm Latinamerican, and I don't like argentineans too much, but I recognize this guy is awsome.
yogagye 2 years ago
Federer followed your advice for the first few sets then forgot to do it.
dodododa 2 years ago
roger has so good first serve, and that is the main reason why he is the no 1. last night it wasn't good with his serve and he lost. his serve is the main reason why he is so dominant on wimbledon. when he doesn't serve well there are 5-6 player that can win him.

I think that was best 2009 final.
dictaturedeGAIA 2 years ago
So Federer was going to win in 4, probably 3 straight sets? So Federer was going to win a lot of points with his serve? So it wasn´t Del Potro´s year? No doubt this chap is just a Federer fan, nothing more.
jamhiereus 2 years ago

I used to love FYB, but now this guy is injecting too much of his own bias into these videos.
ihateuutube 2 years ago
My prediction is that anyone who could beat Nadal could beat Federer but only if they play in the same condition. Also I don't get anyone who thinks djokovic could win more slams. On the other hand Del Potro is the real thing and my next prediction is Del Potro will win at least 4 more slams unless he encounter the weakness of all skinny tall people, lacks of stamina.

I wish I saw the whole match...d'oh!!

Will, you are not taking psychological factors into account, that´s why you´re not predicting right.
Del Potro had the best mentality in the final, and that made the difference.
But you do analyze the tactics very well, I´ll give you that.

fed's 1st went back to switzerland and didn't even send a post card. I think that was a fundamental issue in the defeat. What suprised me was how calmly fed took the defeat, not even a tear. Must be his new kids giving him a higher perspective, but perhaps he was still in shock aswell.

FYB2007 2 years ago
Haha, it's ok. Everyone makes mistakes. Besides, there was probably thousands of other people who would have predicted the same, that Federer would win. I thought that might've happened, too, considering that he had a 6-0 record against del Potro and he beat him really badly at the 2009 AO 6-3, -0,6-0

SkylerZX 2 years ago
5 - 4 in the third at 1 set a piece. Fed started off on fire, but since the first set he's look out of sorts. Serving poorly (41% for the match last time I checked), ball toss has been low which results in a sped up motion, footwork has been sloppy... Having said that, things are looking better now. Fed looks fired up, momentum shifting and Del Potro has just double faulted to lose the second set 4-6.
Fed leads 6-3 6-7 6-4
