I saw there were a lot of questions, so i figured i'd try to help out.

Vue is a 3D animation program designed for making landscapes and enviroments. (For example the rocky backgrounds on the canibal island in Pirates 2 were made with this.)

It's got special features like landscaping tools, and ecosystem to make millions of plans & trees with a few mouseclicks.

It's not the program in which you animate your T-rex walking, but you can in- and export files and data between Vue and other programs.

that depends, your rig should do ok for setting up the scene (its fairly similar to mine). but if you want good quality results it will take you a while. my video that i posted here took 10 hours for the vue render.

I'm using Vue 6 xStream (w. Floating License) at the moment. brilliant piece of software, great workflow. 5 minutes setup, 5 days rendering. :D

The quality doesn't depend on your videocard at all...it depends on the quality settings. All the rendering is handled by the CPU, so its just a matter of how much time you want to wait (and how good your CPU is). The only thing the video card handles is the openGL preview, and you can get by with a cheap videocard if you utilize the program correctly.

This trailer was all done in Vue 6 Infinite, I use xStream and find I can do the same your choice really depends on how good your graphics card is and how much variety u want the software to be cable of e.g. Infinite can do anything you want while xStream specializes in enviroments and obviously Cost is a factor also as infinite costs more :(

Great technology. But once you produce something ask yourself "Where is the innate artist here? Where is the artistic skill?" I mean, I see "works" produced by this program and the viewer, who doesn't know it's mostly canned work, goes gaga and praises the artistic skills of the one that made the picture. Go figure...

artistic skill is a very relative term. The correct use of color, light and shade = artistic skill in this case. The software wont do that for you. you can produce really crappy stuff with this if you dont have the 'artistic skill'.

There's a lot of artistic skill that goes into using this program. In addition to light and shade and color, placement, and most importantly artistic vision of the whole. Art communicates, right? Well theres a lot of communication and expression that can be done with Vue. Entire worlds can be called forth. I just wish people's normal computers could render it real-time so games would be more realistic.

What they said, AND you're obviously not an animator. Animation itself is an artform and takes years of hard work to be decent. I know the guy who di this reel and he has been a film-maker for years in France, and applies his real-life techniques to animation, and it shows.

Vue 6 Infinite its free to download but is only valid during 60 days after u need to buy it, its not very dificult to use it, just follow the manual, the mountains trees wind wather everything has already been created but u need to know how to put it together

hey i've been working with some stuff exactly like that... I believe Caligari Truespace3.2 is free and i heard about something called blender being free... For green screen I think you might have to go with software, i use Pinnacle Studio

"Merge 3D compositions to video footage?" You mean like green screen? Yes, sort of, by applying an animation -- an .avi for instance -- to an alpha plane in Vue (easy). A better way is to create multiple animations in Vue, turning off layers. To make a real person generated from a green screen run through a Vue jungle, make two animations in Vue, one with only the foreground visible and one with only the background visible. An editor like Premier can combine the three layers.
