Thank you for a timely film shown on CTV a day after downtown Toronto was ravaged by thugs during the G20 meeting. From a Concordance in my Holy Bible, KJV School & Library Reference Edition, I searched the words 'laughter', 'joy', and 'great joy' and found dozens of verses that in my opinion affirm laughter, i.e. Genesis 21:6 "And Sarah said, God hath made me laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me." ...etc. I've cried enough. I will laugh!
CTV in Toronto ran this film on TV today. To justify their conclusion "the Bible discourages it", half of one verse from the entire Bible was quoted. The complete verse in Ecclesiastes 7;3 reads "Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better." Eccl. 3:4 says "A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance."
Christian condemnation of laughter ("Christ never laughed"), and "weeping alone unites with God, while laughter leads a person away from God"
On the other hand, Plato says that laughter is a malicious reaction to the absurd or ridiculousness defects in others, but argues that laughing at one's friends is always malicious; however, laughing at one's enemies is neither wrong nor malicious.
I would agree that laughter in social circles, in particular when it's directed at an individual is malicious. Teasing is NOT innocent fun. It is dead serious. A way of establishing dominance in social groups, i.e., who is the alpha male and female around the table. When you are with friends or at a family gathering and a joke is made at your expense which provokes laughter make no mistake, that person is demonstrating to everyone else that he or she is superior to you.
I personally love to laugh with people but I hate it when the laughter is directed at someone. Unless that someone happens to be an arrogant a**hole, who feels superior on grounds of racism or other undeserving factors.
Sociologists have found that teasing begins around the age of five. It serves the same purpose in human society as play fighting does among wolves, namely, to establish dominance and one's place in the social order. Whether it's in school or the workplace or at a party, more often than not you'll find that the "arrogant a**hole" as you say is usually the one directing the jokes at others. What he's really doing is reminding everyone around him that he is the dominant alpha male.
I know exactly what you mean and to tell you the truth I have always confronted those arrogant a**holes even though I don't consider myself an Alpha male by any measure.
You see, people tend to forget we are not animals, and if someone tries to use brute force on me to impose his/her undeserving arrogance I will use pure intelligence to defend myself and I will go as far as it takes and it will be absolutely legitimate.
So, getting back to your original question, maybe this is why both Jesus and Plato both found laughter to be repugnant. Because it is "animal-like" behavior. I'm just guessing. FWIW, Zen Buddhists smile, but they disapprove of open-mouthed laughter. So there's a wide range of philosophies to choose from that all find laughter to be crude behavior.
You can literally pee on your pants laughing without hurting anybody's feelings.
If you have to resort to make fun of someone to get a laugh, that only shows how mean you are. Besides, that kind of laughter always sounds faked. It makes me yawn when I hear people laughing like that, not sure why.
in psychology, laughter can serve as a defensive mechanism for many things ranging from our most primitive emotions, like fear or anxiety, or it can also serve as a kind of social glue, among many other things many people would consider irrelevant.
It all depends on the context. I recall a whitewater river guide telling really stupid jokes to a bunch of us newbies before we hit some class 4 rapids. We were clearly nervous and the jokes helped us to relax. Another good example of laughter easing tension would be the TV series Generation Kill, where recon marines going into battle tell sick jokes to ease the tension. It works. Laughter can get you through difficult times. But laughter can also sometimes be malicious.

The first 26 seconds I thought it was a mockery of Scientology
Cue the breathless clips of Tom Cruise on Oprah and it's perfect.

'if deaf blind babies can laugh, maybe i can do it too.'
Feasible, plausible even.
I mean, I'm no doctor but it sounds like he's onto something.
Extensive studies are needed.
Is it physically possible? In theory it works...amazing...

Laugh or smile at least 5 times per day and you'll feel much much better ;]

Plato hated it, the Bible discouraged it and psychologists once thought it would drive you insane?
Does anyone have any references on those statements?
Thanks

I want references too. A statement like that need to be referenced.

i too would like to know. i've never read anything in the Bible about laughter being bad, but I then again I haven't read the entire Bible either.

Ok, I found it:
Google:
"Laughter: A Theological Reflection"
Christian condemnation of laughter ("Christ never laughed"), and "weeping alone unites with God, while laughter leads a person away from God"
On the other hand, Plato says that laughter is a malicious reaction to the absurd or ridiculousness defects in others, but argues that laughing at one's friends is always malicious; however, laughing at one's enemies is neither wrong nor malicious.

Agreed,
it's different to laugh with than to laugh at.
The first is congenial, the second derisive.
I personally love to laugh with people but I hate it when the laughter is directed at someone. Unless that someone happens to be an arrogant a**hole, who feels superior on grounds of racism or other undeserving factors.

But I have to disagree with that statement.
