A lot of you all's comments sounds very stupid. So Mrs. graves is supposed to totally change her technique and ignore her "natural" tone to fit what other "think" they know what this piece is supposed to sound like??? Wrong, Mrs. Graves has a powerful full-tones voice and it fits very well with the emotion felt in this aria.
This is not a dreadfully sung rendition, as such, but it is not at all 'performed', and leaves me stone cold. i simply didn't believe she was dying. Please check out Janet Baker. You'll never be able to listen to this in the same way again. I have checked out every version on this site, and it is head and shoulders above all of them.
Then you need to go back and listen to Jessye Norman again!!!!!!!! If you felt nothing from that woman's performance of this song, then you surely have no soul
I suspect that much of this should be sotto voce--she is dying, after all! On the other hand, very few mezzo sopranos can float the phrase "remember me" on a G above the treble clef--which is only one example of why Dido is not meant to be sung by a mezzo soprano.
Yes but singing without vibrato at times suites the baroque style and shows verstilit and control in the singer. Norman just has too much with not enough variation in her voice. Her pitch is also sometimes not accurate enough.
I agree with you NubianKing..she is just simply fantastic. I have heard many sopranos do these peices and she just sors..you can experience the passion and sorrow of the text thru her voice and interpretation. beautifully done
re comments on Graves voice: This is the voice she has. She can't remake it for another style. Many singers foray into areas that are not ideal for them. However, this rendition sounds very "diva-ish" which is why it sounds so off-putting. She has a glorious instrument, but how many Carmens and Delilahs should she sing? Ther person who said this is terrible must come from another planet. It may not be to his/her taste but it is far from terrible.
Well René Jacobs, William Christie and Marc Minkowsky thems elves are for having natural vivrato, if controled. This is a very passed and incorrect habit into ancient music to sing without any vibrato.
Well I will respectfully disagree! Her style and technique, although not perfect, are definitely far from terrible! The richness of her voice serves to conveigh the story of the songs beautifully!
Stunning! Just one little point. You've spelt it Belina when it is actually Belinda. It would be a pity for people to miss this because they had not searched for "Belina" Thanks for posting it! :)
I love her too! I dont know if the Grace Bumbry comp. is quite right but I guess I can see where you would get that from. Anyway Thanks for the Comment!
Thank you so much! Miss Graves is simply fantastic don't you agree? I like to share what I have access too. It's gorgeous music! Thanks for the Comment!
I thank you a million times! And it wouldn't be enough.. This is my favorite version of this aria after Leontyne Price. I don't know why, I just like her on this aria. But I still don't have it in my collection.. Such a pity.. I got to get this somehow..
For me.. this is AMAZING.. i like the turn she put on it..

Of course you can use vibrato in this piece! Look at the great Leontyne, she certainly uses vibrato in this aria and no one can touch her

Beautiful tone. Beautiful phrasing and unique ornaments. And yes, she sings with a vibrato. Thank you, Ms. Graves for your wonderful gift...

this may be too much for you here on youtube, but in a large theater, it would work.

in my humble opinion i think Jessye Norman sings it the best.Miss Norman sings it with such feeling and her voice is deep and rich.this is also good.

Denyce has a beautiful voice and she sounds great. It's something about the way Jessye did sang this song. I like Jessye's version better.

Vibrato is a sign of a mature, strong, enriched tone. The "sotto voce" stuff is for choir boys.
cglando 4 years ago
Sometimes it sounds good when you sing "soto voce" - especially if the composer wants you to - which is not the case here!!

The voice has a very intereresting tone, but the style is terrible! This is not a verismo piece where that large vibrato will sound adecuate...
