A triplet is actually not just three notes together. Triplets are the rhythmical value of three notes (or beats) played in the same space (or same time) as two ordinary notes (weather it's quarter notes, eighth notes or sixteenths etc) so, for example, if you have two eighth notes, and add another eighth note between them, but play the three eighth notes to the equivalent value of the two eighth notes, you are playing triplets.
