  • That's one of my favorite James Taylor songs. Having his father in the audience was very nice. See how he whistled at the end.

  • This is my favorite James Taylor song. chords, rhythm, lyrics all fit so perfectly.sweet music.

  • I'll see him next may in Paris. It surely be the experience of a lifetime...

  • Still amazing.

  • 7 people are openly jealous that they are not James Taylor.

  • Thumbs up if you think this should have 20x the views than Justin Bieber

  • who didnt notice the seven people who escaped from a mental institution??

  • @Fmyngboss Why?! Are they looking for you!?

  • I really love watching James Taylor sing.

  • and the angels sigh...

  • @craftycrafter1960 Yeah......

  • My Copperline is Springfield ... everything changes. Except James. Thank you for a lifetime of incredible music.

  • 7 people never took a page from a romance book.

  • You just get the feeling he is the nicest and coolest guy around. A genius to be sure who struggled with substances and love and came out on top in the end. A model American.

  • James Taylor & John Denver were probably the two best concerts I ever saw.Troubadours FTW!

  • JT is a national treasure!!! I agree with others here - seeing him live is an incredible, unforgettable experience.

  • Saw him in concert twice and the first time was so magical. It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. It was at the Sleep Country Ampitheatre in Vancouver, WA and yes he did this song, one of my favorites

  • Copper will increase in value a lot more than Gold someday soon and silver will follow copper in that line. I only heard this song once before but I knew it was good but felt the melody deserved better than this unpalatable copper-snake stuff .. OK a small criticism. Oh yeah I realize how clever the lyrics are but I prefer "anywhere like heaven to this town , your town" and/or Carolina and My Mind or Rainy Day Man or You Can close your eyes and think of how James was once more vital.

  • Love this live performance

and lovely to see the good relationship between him and his dad and their shared musical talent and love for music.

(I don't really know why John and Julian Lennon suddenly came to my mind, but wouldn't it be great if John was still alive (would be priceless in itself) and if John would be in an audience of Julian performing live .. maybe John would finally acknowledge Julian (!) and see that he is a fine songwriter, too. (Julian always craved the love of his dad)

  • This performance is lovely (seeing his reaction when the camera picked out his daddy brought tears to my eyes) ... and still, as unique as hearing the original JT sing it is, I prefer the UNC Clef Hangers' a cappella version, off their CD Crackin' Up. Check it out if you get a chance -- though if having the pace picked up ruins it for you, don't! :)

  • Love the song...James at his creative best...but I always thought the end of the bridge was somewhat forced or mis-timed on the album version...(the part where he sings "the sap rises, and the angles sigh"). Just a strange imperfection on an otherwise gorgeous song.

  • @MrNotyag Do you realize what you just said...The last few decades? So, he has been producing music that the masses have been listening to "for the last few decades". I think JT's place in the world is secure.

  • The very idea of Romantic America exists in his lyrics. I'm Irish, I never lived in the world he describes, but he made all that's good in America exist for me. I've been listening to him since my teens and I hope Americans have been listening to him too.

  • who ever disliked this video is a dumb shit

  • Funny thing about about Taylor's music...you'll listen and have tears in your eyes yet a smile on your face as well.

  • saw him twice when I was a child on this album tour. Legend

  • And as you may or may not know, James lives on Martha's Vineyard, MA. , with his mother. He and Carly Simon who had been married for some years and having two children finally called it quits when things just weren't working out. He has a "barn studio" for rehearsing with his band and rehearses regularly. Carly I think, lives one town away. Both great artists!

  • I actually talked to Dr Taylor once..dear man.RIP, Isaac.

  • simply beautiful; feels like love.

  • I had the privileged to see him once again on 04/01/11 @ Hershey. This is by far the most wonderful Birthday present I've ever got since JT signed my Albums and pose for a picture with me. I had see him over a 100 times through USA since I met him back in NYC in 1987. Growing up in spanish Ecuador, JT's Lyrics and music was the sole inspiration for me to learn English as a second language. JT has been my best English teacher. Thanks JT for sharing your musical talents with your fans.

    Vicente

  • Love this one...tappin' my feet and smilin"

  • i have listened to his music since birth (thank you, dad). listening to him makes me feel home.

  • the fact that someone admits to being from South Carolina is amazing

  • James Taylor's dad can really whistle!!!! ( See the very end of this video) Awesome!!!

  • For his dad..............that`s very special.

  • This ones for you Elaine Marie!!!!!!!!

  • This ones for you Elaine Marie

  • Since I was 14 I have loved his voice and guitar playing...... always relaxes me and makes me feel good. I saw him in Brighton UK for the first time in 2003..... wow, what an amazing live performer!!

  • This is the first song that the love of my life and I danced to! It was so cute! It is his favorite song!

  • Who in the hell can dislike this??

  • @jadent300 I think two guys mistakely hit the wrong button ;)

  • P-E-R-F-E-C-T-I-O-N

  • R.I.P. Reynolds Price, a writer of remarkable and varied talents.

  • Great video!

  • this song is so sweet!!

  • read several Reynolds Price books throughout the years... look for Kate Vaiden for example... great writer... and this little ditty.... gets me everytime!

  • mans a legend

  • indeed!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @666999meg I AM SO PROUD TO SAY HE IS FROM MY HOME STATE OF N.C. -HE IS A TREASURE

  • @allenwood100 .....my homestate too... tears in my eyes listening to this...and he is a true Treasure,

    Go Heels!!!! and Wolfpack!!!

  • @allenwood100 The people of planet Earth have claimed him.

  • Good God, those eyes...I saw him in person 25 years ago and was so mesmerized by his presence that I barely noticed the amazing music. Classic and talented beyond anything you see nowadays.

  • i remember hearing this song for the first time at a geneo's pizza here in calumet city, il. i was with my wife-to -be. she is now my one and only. i love you marybelle.

  • Wow. WIthout a doubt James Taylor's best song for me, but the original is overproduced. This is literally perfect

  • I saw James when he still had hair. I would love to see him again. He just keeps getting better and better.

  • Simple but meaningful, this music in its truest form

  • this is the only "country" singer i can really vibe with man.

  • where will we be without James healthy, smiling, touring, singing? He is a legend in his own corner and very well respected special one. I so happened to have a place in the summer like Copperline I spent my summers in northern ontario and I connect so much to that song right down to the 1st kiss, ever I took, it DID feel like the clouds opened and the earth shook this girl was so pretty and I was in 12 year old LUVVV , it truly felt MAGICAL though it was such a high.

  • TRY and get to see James Taylor once ..at least once in your lifetime...its something special, and an occassion that will stay with you throughout the rest of your life...The guy just has that genuine class factor about him.....Try and get to a concert whenever he is in your area..the connection he makes with the crowd is quite amazing .....he is a once off ...we will not see the likes of him in the future , ..James Taylor ..simply the best singer/songwriter of our generation .

  • @bekindunlimited I had the honor of seeing him in concert in September 2009, one of the best concerts I've been to, James still sounds GREAT!

  • @bekindunlimited, either him or Gordon Lightfoot.

  • "New Moonshine",a stroke of genius.Saw him at The Royal Albert Hall years ago,he was magnificent.

  • @bekindunlimited I SOOOOO agree. And his voice in concert is exactly as it is in his recordings. It's stellar. I will never get over it. I can die happy now. :)

  • @bekindunlimited I saw James with carole king, and it was such a pleasure

  • @wiehow ......that must have been really special....I saw James in july in concert in Dublin ..and he was truly superb

  • @bekindunlimited It is indeed a treat to see him live. He is just like this, hasnt really changed at all with age! I was a little disappointed in the last concert, he was with his son who is also very good but I wished James had done moreof his own songs, it was maybe 50/50 with his son.

  • Really good song...period end of story!

  • One of the great artists of our time. I drove to Western Mass. from South Carolina to see him at Tanglewood a couple of years ago. Would do it again!

  • ...Tore up and tore up good.........beautiful...thank u JT

  • Impossible to hate or despise James Taylor's music.

  • @talissin

I often think that JT has improved the quality of our lives through his music.

  • LOVE this man!!!

  • I saw him and Carole K in Oz. Not only was he in superb form, his onstage courtesy to her (a woman of 68!) was so exquisite that no wonder, when someone in the audience yelled Do You Love Him? Carole said Oh I've loved James for years! And I love Kim (JT's wife) too, but don't get the wrong idea about that! It was a truly magnificent show. Our culture is generally far kinder to old men than old women. That night, however, she felt loved and appreciated. This man is a treasure.

  • How wonderful, thank you!

  • My musical hero.

  • This one reminds me of HATTERAS, especially the line about "tore up good." It's about change. And Hatteras is still beautiful.

  • Why would you leave the first burst of applause in, trying to deafen everyone ????

  • Saw JT in Christchurch NZ in March 2010 - best ever! Love all of his music - he is such a gentleman.....

  • I woke up, came on youtube and watched this again. Nothing compares to this James you flippin' GENIUS!!

  • My wife and I got to see JT live a year ago, and I completely agree that JT is just incredible. He is so talented, and such a humble nice guy too. When the band took a break at intermission, JT hung around at the edge of the stage and chatted with members of the audience. How many other pros do that!! And JT sounded fantastic, as did the rest of his band. JT is one of the all time greats.

  • @pecanpie100 Because he cares about his fans! You think little wayne or lady gagga gives two shits about their fans?? They just care about seeing their bank account grow higher and higher

  • the best thing about classic artists is they sound great live and in the studio, where nowadays artists only sound good in the studio

  • this is not my absolute favorite JT song (that would be carolina on my mind) but it may be the quintessential JT song. it has such a soothing, easygoing vibe that you almost overlook the fact that it is a stunning piece of art.

oh and i love his dad whistling at the end.

  • Just lovely ...brings back memories of summer holidays ,barn dances ...first love....all this at 12 years of age.!!!

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written ! I can hear james taylor singing it a thousand times and still be amazed by it.

  • Just simply one of the best !! James Taylor thank you : )

  • I love how he just seems like such an everday guy you might sit down by at a bus stop. A nice quality a lot of aritst/ celebs don't understand anymore.

  • @mrhoffame Agree - plus he talks to his audiences between songs and has a great sense of humor. You can sing, dance, clap, be nostalgic and chuckle all at the same time - while being inspired by his genius and mellow voice! What a combination! Love ya James!

  • This song is pretty good...

  • LOVE YOU J

for ever, and back again. Never felt anything like the feeling you sing. And I've been sooooo eclectic and sooooo wide, as age creeps on, I know where my home is, and you live right next door. X

  • Just saw the string bean play this 3 weeks ago. He's still the best 40 years later.

  • I've seen people post about the origins of the lyrics. Well, "Copperline" is indeed a metaphor, but as much as a place, or a culture, or a mindset, I think he's referring to the fact that copper tubing is used in the construction of stills to produce moonshine. So, Copperline can be a place, and a culture, and a mindset, and an era, and his childhood... and good whiskey! =)

    LoL. Peace.

  • this just makes me wander off into places and spaces....not to mention just weep silently and remember....anytime any where any reason at all and none. Many thanks atty...many....

  • I think his father should be very proud of him. It was also his father that helped James Taylor to battle his drug addiction early in his singer/songwriting career and look at how successful James Taylor is now. James Taylor is a true living legend. I was lucky enough to see him in Edinburgh, Scotland and it was the best concert I have ever been to. If you get the chance to see him, DO IT. You won't regret it.

  • the skillful and soulful SIR JAMES TAYLOR

  • i saw him a few weeks ago with carole king when he came to new zealand - freaking AMAZING! truly an inspiring man, i'm so glad my dad got me into his music.

  • Hi, I'm French and I just love this song but I don't get all the lyrics... I will appear stupid but what is this Copperline ? I check the lyrics and there are so many things certainly truely american that I don't understand...

  • @F3FisGoodforYou / check out google for copperline and you may get a better picture/ can relate to you as my son has married a french girl fom normanby!!

  • @F3FisGoodforYou "Copperline" is a metaphorical place that you won't find it on any map. It represents the place and experiences that James knew growing up near Morgan Creek outside of Chappel Hill, North Carolina where his father was the Dean of Medicine at the University of North Carolina. He taks of going back there as an adult and finding it destroyed by housing developments ("tore up, tore up good").

  • but i agree, james is an incredible artist, one of the greatest along with Cat Stevens, the Eagles and Eric Clapton

  • This song is unreal! Harmonies are perfect....love it

  • There's not too many people I admire but SBJ is one of them. Incredible man, incredible talent.

  • I'm glad I live in the beautiful state of North Carolina where James Tayler grew up. The a capella group 'UNC Clefhangers' from the university of Chapel Hill (where his father used to teach) have a great rendition of this song, and also from Carolina on my mind. Check them out!

  • I hate to burst your bubble but James Taylor was not borned or raised in NC.

  • @zorro10451 he wasn't born, but he was raised in NC

  • @zorro10451 its born you dumb fuck not borned

  • thanks for the story behind the song suxass..and squibknocket is a place on the vineyard where jt has a beautiful barn-like studio..great song..if you have never seen him perform now is the time cause he`s touring with another legend..carole king!

  • James' music is too amazing. He make me smile whenever I hear his beautiful music and voice.

  • I'm 13 years old but this man was my companion all my life cause of my father (ovation66). he likes him, so he played james taylors music often on his guitar and listened to it while I was with him in the car or somewhere else. and now, I just have to thank him!

  • thought it was about copper mining but guess not .

  • James is an absolute hero! The number of brilliant tracks he's come up with over the years is unbelievable.

  • what a fuckin legend``!!!!!

  • What's not to love really, beautiful song, beautiful expression.

  • omg i LOVE him!!! I wanna go to NC! ty for the good music!!!

  • Copperline is a nickname for the southern area of Chapel Hill North Carolina where JT grew up!

One of JT's best , thanks attybong !

  • He's speaking of where he grew up, or some memory of it. He explains it well on the Squibknocket video. Copperline is a place that could have been, I love the you tube experts who continually get their facts wrong lol

  • Just found out that there is no place called copperline!

    gutted!!!!

  • it was torn down, stupid. that's what it says in the song!

  • dumbass

  • his Dad looks just like him

  • Reminds me of my funeral

  • What a gem of a song! "Copperline" has always been one of my all-time favorites

  • Lovely! What concert was this? I'm having a hard time finding videos of JT from this decade - the 80's I think. Love his melodies and lyrics. Also grew up listening to him. He has the ability to transport us to special places!

  • James Taylor was my first concert I ever went to in the 80's.His voice was so awesome back then and still to this day is.

  • Mr Taylor was the first artist I ever listened to on an ancient record player 30 years ago, his songs will stay with me for ever, sounding as fresh and as beautiful as the day they were made. God bless you sweet baby James x

  • Why can't we all just RESPECT an artist for their music, which is art??? I have listened to James' music for several decades and, it is heavenly. Let's leave politics where they belong! In political sites!!!

  • I think James is a big time Liberal but I don't care---I LOVE his music!!!!

  • es geht auf die Seele - tief. Ich lieb diese Art Musik.

  • Some on the LEFT have to perpetuate their stereotype of hateful ignorance. Just shut up and enjoy the music

  • artists and celebrities are citizens just like the rest of us. If we have a right to speak our minds, so do they.

  • "First kiss, ever I took, like a page from a romance book, the sky opened and the earth shook, down on copper line". Magic!

  • Some on the right have to perpetuate their stereotype of hateful ignorance. Just shut up and enjoy the music.

  • that's what I say...

  • You know...I agree that entertainers have everything to lose and nothing to gain by speaking their political views AND I don't really give big fat shit what they belive BUT I LOVE James Taylor (sorry for his F/U political views) But again I say shut UP and sing I don't care about your political views-shut up on your political views--rem the dixie chicks (bitches went away with their big fat political views) Sing act and shut up you dumb asses... S

  • listened to this song when i was little.. still one of my favorite songs

  • he's so amazing!

  • James Taylor is one of the best artists still around from an era of truly great artists... he is even better live than recorded and if you ever get a chance to see him live you will not regret it. He is a true artist and amazing to watch and, more overly, listen to.

  • @gman1972inATL thanks for the info .. i'm a huge JT fan as well

i'd loved to have one of my guitars autographed by him if i had the change

do you think he would oblige? thanks again ..

  • @gman1972inATL James Taylor is one of the greatest artists of his era. He comes from a time when songs had meaning and talent was something you were born with and work your butt off to perfect. And i have never seen him in concert, so all those who have, thank your lucky stars. They dont make em like him anymore..:)

  • Carlos Vega, RIP.

  • What a great singer.. what a great song. I love it .. as I love all his songs.

  • very nice song!

  • Fantastic song!

  • What a fantastic song, thanks for posting this.

  • Saw him in concert last summer. He didn't play this one but it was still an awesome night.

  • Great song and love his songs

  • Heart Like a Wheel

  • i kept shouting for him to sing copperline in bournemouth, still a fantastic show though, his voice just seems to get better and better,i can listen to him for ever sooooo relaxing

  • james's father was a pediatrician,just thought i would pass that along

  • The commentary here is the finest that I have seen on YouTube. This guy is a national treasure and something of an institution, that's for sure. He gives new meaning to modest, laid back and cool. I guess because of his lyrical references and the places he's lived, I tend to associate him with beautiful fall days, easy summer nights, and quiet crowd-free beaches. Morgan Creek surely isn't what it used to be, and that's sad, and brilliantly expressed in this song.

  • JT is a brilliant songwriter and singer! I love this song!

  • not my favorite JT song but very good one

  • Saw James Taylor in Erie PA at one of his personal concerts where it was just him and his guitar. I was 7 rows from the front, dead center.... one of the most pleasant evenings I've ever had in my whole life. Great concert... thanks James...

  • saw this show ......... loved it! Shook James' hand.

  • He didn't play Copperline at Bournemouth - nor Frozen Man, Enough to be on your way or October Road :0(

  • His brother Livingston is sitting beside his father in the audience, to his right.

  • I relate to a place "Copperline" in my youth and it was a magic place we spent 25 entire summers on 1 of the Great Lakes. First kiss ever I took, was exactly as he said in the song, I actually experienced that with most beautiful girl on planet age 11 or 12. James Taylor will be in my favorites FOREVER. Up on the Roof on Sesame Street tells a lot about the man, totally a class act.

  • i'd also like to say that "gustercourt",you got it dead right ,his singing always gives me goosebumps too,i was 17 when i first heard him,so glad he's doing so well all this time later,"bournemouth uk on my mind!!"

  • only 6 days to go,then i can see him perform live, bournemouth here we come!!

  • i can only hope to be such a sweet soul as JT!!

  • The song - and the beautiful comments you've all left - have given me the goosebumps on this hot humid Rhode Island summer night. James Taylor will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart and remind me of my beautiful parents and my childhood...

  • This song shows how well he also writes both lyrics and music ... great song writer and a delight to listen to ... puts you back in time ... wow!! I love JT.

  • There are many places that only exist in our memories. For me, this song captures the soul of longing for places that I can only revisit in my heart.

  • Beautiful music & a poet's delight!

  • When ever he's asked to do the national anthem for one of Bostons teams he's introduced as a "national treasure". A line that's so true

  • James taylor is a legend..and "Doowwnn of copperline" is a family fav...

  • Thank you once again James....I love artists that sing with passion and from the heart, something that alot of todays generation needs to listen and learn from.

    God bless you James.

  • Dad* Haha damn my keyboard! ;P

  • LOVE this song..It reminds me of olden days riding in the car with my Dad and him blaring this out of the car stereo ;) Good times, good memories ;) And ya just gotta love James Taylor's FDad whistling at the end!! ;) Dope shit..Much LuV!!
