According to the latest Scary Monsters Magazine, this was recently released on DVD--I would definitely like to pick up a copy of this. I think the rarity of this movie through the years has added to it's mystique.
"Gog" aired several times on the old "Creature Double Feature" anthology series (1974-1982) on WLVI Channel 56 in Boston. Unfortunately, plans for CDF to issue its movie stock on DVD fell through time after time. Thus, many movies like "Gog" and "Magnetic Monster" are only available piecemeal on YouTube.
3:28 in "It sounds like the work of a MANIAC" (The MANIAC (Mathematical Analyzer, Numerical Integrator, and Computer or Mathematical Analyzer, Numerator, Integrator, and Computer) was an early computer built under the direction of Nicholas Metropolis at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. The MANIAC ran successfully in March 1952.
I honestly can't remember if I saw GOG in a theatre in the late 50's... I seem to recall seeing it on a big screen but saw definitely it on TV in the early 1960's on a local channel that had a sci-fi movie on Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I lived in Connecticut at the time but the station was out of New Jersey...channel 9 I think.
Directed by Herbert L. Strock, Gog was produced by Ivan Tors, the third and last of his "OSI" films (the first was the literate and engaging "Magnetic Monster"). Tors also produced the classic '50s T.V. series "Science Fiction Theatre. Though one of the last of the 3-D films of the '50s, Gog was shown theatrically in standard flat projection, receiving generally good reviews.
Gog was filmed in 15 days, with principal photography at Hal Roach Studios in Culver City, CA, and outdoor shots at George AFB in the Mojave Desert. There was also a photographic master shot in widescreen (1.85:1), which may survive. Distinguished actor Herbert Marshall played Van Ness.
I also remember this movie when I was young. Scared the hell out of me. It has been in my memories ever since. I believe I was about 8-9. Saw it once on TV since and made me chuckle to think how it had ifluenced me. Great film though and will watch it if its on again.
Loved this movie! Lots of creative killing! One death by sonic waves, one attempt (the main girl) by solar reflector! Then there was the mysterious ship in space!? Saw it when I was younger on Saturday Shock Theater.
Anybody alive today that saw it in the theater? Anybody alive and online? It ain't on DVD, VHS or Itunes, and though it aired twice or so on television...very few, very very few people have seen this film between the age of 40-12.
@MisterMaxHeadroom I am 65 and I saw this movie as a young person in the Theaters in 1954. I was born in 1946. That made me about 8 or 9 at the time. And yes, this movie made a great impression on me. Especially the robots.
@stellarblue51 I am 57 years old and I remember watching this on TV with my older brother.....probably around 1960. I remember it really frightened me....those robots. I actually have this on video tape from when it was shown on tv many years ago
@stellarblue51 I was living in a suburb outside Boston and back then we only had The 3 stations ; channel 4, 5 & 7 can't remember the station names. I don't remember if this was on a "creature feature type format". We had "fantasmic features" on either friday or saturday night and I just lived for that. I lived one block from the town center and I would go out and get potato chips and a bottle of coke in preparation for my monster movie night.
@inkey2 I can really RELATE to your getting potato chips in preparation for the Monster night(s). Friday or Saturday in most big cities. I remember back the 50 or so years and it seems sometimes like last week. What a trip this world and life is.
I saw the movie in the theaters when I was about six years old. The robots terrified me. I don't remember it being in color. The print quality of this excerpt is excellent. I think I might have seen it a second time on television because I recall plot details that would have escaped a six year old. I would like to see it again,

Yes, I saw it (at the drive-in) during its first release. It is the prototype "Area 51" movie. Ivan Tors always based his sci-fi on fact.

I always thought this movie was filmed in black and white. I must have watched it on a black and white tv set.

Well, I'm alive today. Didn't see it in the theater but on TV. I NEVER thought I'd see this one again. Thank you MMH!

I saw this as a kid in the 60's on TV and have a sloppy DVD copy.
The film was way ahead of it's time, dealing with an unknown enemy sabotaging an "Area 51" facility deep in the desert.
A decent editing job but it needs more content, and lose that silly music track!
If you're trying to make it hip and cutting edge with the music, you've failed.
