Amazingly, this classic only climbed to #72 on Billboard's Hot 100 over it's seven week chart run starting February 1, 1960. The same melody (with different lyrics) was rfecorded as "Peanut Butter" by The Marathons, who were actually The Virations uner a flase name. "Peanut Butter" reached #20 on Billboard's Hot 100 charts in 1961.
Being there when this song came out and going with the dances of those times...this song is perfectly timed. It wouldn't have been near as much fun to dance to if it was faster.
THIS version was played a lot on Seattle radio, more so than "Hully Gully Baby" by the Dovells, and I've been looing for this for years (I never knew who did it)...
@BobBerkeley Yes Bob, they made a big hit regionally out of the song "Good Lovin" and this was the song that got them invited to the Ed Sullivan Show. It's unfortunate that during that time Black artist never recieved their just do.
I was in a 99 cents store this morning on the way to work and they were playing a Stevie Nicks tune, which I silently acknowledged without much thought, then I went across the parking lot to a Superior supermarket where they were playing pre-'70s oldies, and suddenly this song permeated the store's sound system. Nothing against Ms. Nicks, but I simply got more pure pleasure out of this song. I haven't heard it for a few years, and it's like being reacquainted with an old friend.
Growing up in L.A. It was 1961 I was cruising in a 1949 Chevy Fleetline with my older brother. XERB Soul radio was on ,Wolfman Jack plays this song , I will never forget it. Music of that era was too cool.
I like Chubby Checker's version ("Ït's Pony Time" Parkway 7003 Lp-1961) better. I usually don't put up the originals against the covers, but Chubby's version is much cleaner.Parkway's musicians made it sound crispier and with The Dreamlovers singing background they didn't miss!!
Saw the Olympics last night (8-21-09) at Primm, Nevada. What fun times. I loved this song. Had forgotten it...however, last night all my teen memories came back to me.
@fatdaddyful Chubby Checker recorded a song called "The Slop" on his first Parkway Lp,that sounds very much like Hully Gully. The chord progresion is exactly the same.
Why aren't these guys in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I went to the website of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and saw that Wanda Jackson was inducted into the Hall in this year, 2009. Wanda Jackson? SAY WHAT???!!! Why was a marginal country artist inducted into the Hall, while one of the most soulful groups isn't even nominated for induction. This is a travesty. This is the height of insanity. Get these guys inducted into the Hall. These guys are the best.
The ROCK Hall of Fame is a bunch of cROCK! Wanda Jackson? (Must be Michael's 1st wife;-) What about THE OLYMPICS??????????? CHUBBY CHECKER????????????????? JAN&DEAN???????????????????????? AND LOTS MORE WHO DESERVE RECOGNITION. POLI-TICKS!!!!
@lharrell22 Nothing against The Olympics, but Wanda Jackson is the queen of rockabilly, one of the best original r'n'r gals, and still performing and much loved by the fans. She should have been inducted in the R'n'R Hall of Fame many years ago.
@lharrell22 I think it's called 'the sin of omission', or, as you say, downright stupid.. The PBS series on Rock & Roll made no mention of the Olympics, or, Jackie Wilson..
@lharrell22 Wanda Jackson recorded some of the greatest rockabilly ever made! Besides, she was inexplicably inducted in the "Early Influence" category despite not having made her first record until 1954. That's the travesty!
Groovy! What a great song this is! I've searched and searched forever to find this song and it just popped into my head and went for this song. I forgot it was sung by The Olympics. Thanks again for this video! :)
@califgirl101 It was their 2nd big hit; Summer, '59.. I lived in the same housing projects they came from, in the Watts section of Los Angeles.. Went to school with the sisters of Melvin King & Eddie Ward.. Played with toy horses & cowboys with Melvin King's little brother..One never knows, as Fats Waller use to say..
@mryellowcrown I went on with my life; joined the Navy, and saw some world; moved to a different city, like, San Francisco.. A bit of a rough start, but, I had fun.. What else did I do? Completed my 6th year of retirement, and I still have fun.. Sorry to disappoint you..
I hope someone out there can help. When I was very young I remember my dad speaking of being apart of this group before they made it big. I cant remember all of the details but he said they went to jail. The reason I cant rmember, but their was an arguement and he left or was kicked out. His name was Lester Murray AKA Lil Bro or Brother. He raised me when my parents seperated in the 80's.If anyone remembers him please post.
The Marathons of "Peanut Butter" fame were actually the Vibrations. Arvee label wanted to release another hit single but couldn't wait for the Olympics to get back from touring. Arvee signed the Vibrations under contract with Chess to record "Peanut Butter" This led to various re-recordings of "Peanut Butter" by both the Vibrations on Chess/Argo and some unknown group scraped together by Arvee and given the Marathons moniker. There were no other songs recorded by the Vibrations as the Marathons
It started to go wrong with disco, which was more about drugs than music. Then stadium rock shows ushered in the era of corporate sponsorship. It became more about the spectacle than the music. MTV was the final nail in the coffin as visuals became more important the audio.... Now you have an industry churning out the most manufactured and disposable garbage that appeals to the lowest comment denominator....
The Olympics did "Hully Gully" & The Marathons did "Peanut Butter" They are one-and-the-same. Same group-different name. Different lyrics, to the identical chords/melody. (Slight personnel change along the way).
Ahhh...what a pleasure to hear this again. Infectious and irresistible. Thanks, LadyVee. Wish somebody has some video of the Olympics performing live. I remember seeing them in the 60s at the Howard Theater in Washington, DC. They were fabulous.
memories. My sister and I were singers with the Art Laboe backup band and performed with all the singers of that day. We performed many times with the Olympics One Saturday we performed at the Harmony Park Ballroom in our Home town of Anaheim Ca, as they sang the song we went on the dance floor and did the Hully Gully and were the disgrace of the town.A few months later we sang there again and everyone was dancing it.Ahh now just memories
its great to hear this song again after all these years thanx to ladyvee7110...grew up listening to this song in the 60's...what a great time it was..in fact the best time ever!
