What chord is he playing when he sings "don't"? As in, "that you don't want around anymore"? I can't figure it out or see it well enough to tell what it is, and it's driving me CRAZY!!
@mymytheysigh pretty sure that if you are playing in a standard tuning setup (and if you are starting off with a 'Am/G' chord) then a close approximation of the chord that hits at "don't" would be an F/G# .. at least that's what I play and it sounds well enough for me. So, for the first chord x-0-2-0-1-3 .. and on this chord I leave out the open G and try to emphasize the brighter tones of 1-3 .. but, do as you may there. Secondly the F/G# is as: 4-3-1-1-1-1
@PotentialCarn On that F/G# I emphasize the medium to lower tones. But, Elliott is a clever little player and pulls quick little nuances all the time just perfectly natural and collected--which adds his signature tonal flavor. From that G# it's a half-step walkdown the whole way back down to an F voicing. So, from "don't" where the F/G# is played it then just shifts that same pattern down half a step, so you get 3-2-0-0-0-0 then onto a 2-x-x-2-1-0 then lastly the F 1-3-3-2-1-x
you can really tell if he's feeling a song or not when he's performing live... sometimes he'll play ones he isn't really in the mood for (sometimes he just won't play them) and you can really tell he isn't enjoying it.
it's obvious he was really feeling this song that night though... the performance was spot on amazing. At 1:34 when his voice cracks on "heart"... he was into that song. Definitely one of the most talented, genuine songwriters of all time.
he seems to be very nervious cause.. he plays very fast!. I like him cause he is shy. I´m shy so i cant be a musician. I like playing but i´m scared of people. Good bye
Half the beauty of being a musician is overcoming the fears, letting yourself go, exposing yourself and to let the audience catch you (if you're good enough ofcourse. But practice makes perfect).
Heard this song on skins on Monday, desperatly wrote the lyrics, googled them, downloaded the songs, now I'm obsessed. Thankyou to such a brilliant songwriter.
My favourite song, done so beautifully. Elliott Smith was an inspiration. I wish I could have been to one of his concerts. Thanks for putting this up. RIP Elliott.
He hits them well, but you can tell he's so nervous; it seems like he doesn't have the confidence to give the inflection he wants. Compare this to "Between the Bars" from Lucky Three.
its unfortunate that it sometimes takes severe depression to create such magnificent work. I was lucky to see him live twice. Two totally different shows-1 was powerful the other lackluster. Still a great artist.
i was working and found this song on their playlist... i felt a connection with this one straight away, just in the music, doesnt happen 2 me on that level much. Great track

@PotentialCarn actually, replayed it really quick and the first chord is more like x-0-2-2-1-3

@mymytheysigh potential is right, its the 4-3-1-1-1-1. It may help you to leave your right finger on the third fret as your doing the Am run

My favourite song from Elliott Smith. I wish I could have been to one of his concerts.
Drink up, baby, stay up all night
The things you could do, you won't but you might
The potential you'll be that you'll never see
The promises you'll only make
Drink up with me now and forget all about the pressure of days
Do what i say and i'll make you okay and drive them away
The images stuck in your head...

Yes, agreed. Most of the videos of him live that i have seen he fudges the higher notes down or something, this he hits them all like his recordings.
