@eujeeves Lol. My basenji is purebred, and he tries to bark. They make MANY sounds also. When they try to bark they kind of make a huffing sound.

@piggernenis123456789 I also have a tri-color....He's amazing and I want like 10 basenji's. Bring ten basenji's to the dog park and watch them completely own the place. :) These are some of the most amazing dogs in the world. Their genes are the stuff of legend.

Basenjis are very intelligent. In fact they are said to be cat-like. We don't see cats as unintelligent because they are hard to train, just independent. Same thing with the basenji. They are in fact very intelligent dogs but very independent. A basenji can be trained it just takes more work than most other dog breeds. The list, as said, means absolutely nothing as far as intelligence, it is referring to ease of training and how well the dog listens.

My Basenji is pretty obedient. She follows every command I give her. The only one she doesn't follow is "Come cuddle."

And I would have to say she is the smartest of my three dogs. I have a Jack Russell and a Chihuahua as well.

hmmm try saying it in different languages (including the accent) it works for me I say "komm cosmo" with a swedish accent of course I just said "komm" instead of "come"  when u say it u have to make the "o" sound as in comb but try and relax it a teeny bit then u have komm

Quite funny that you mention this list. The ranking is meaningless if the person who owns the dog fails to train it. 2nd, the list ranks not intelligence BUT OBEDIENCE and the dog's quickness to respond and act. So, dogs like German w. pointer, hound dogs and hunting dogs are ranked low because their skills relate to their hunting abilities, which in turn relies on creativity, timing, patience, teamwork, and obedience all of which can't be measured. Thus, your point is POINTLESS.

ty I did not notice that. I could tell my dog is quite a hunter as for he put a hole in my arm and he did it with only weight! he jumped on me for food and his tooth sank an inch in my inner elbow, I was really lucky he didn't hit any capalaries, veins, etc. but the only time he attacks is when he knows its dead.

this is about my comment below, about the he won't attack unless he knows it is dead. ok my dad was driving me and we found a dead squierrel on the road so we took it for cosmo and when we gave it to him we shook it around by tying its tail to a pole with a fishing rod and moved it around, he didn't care. but when we buried it he undug it as if it were a long lost bone and was tormenting it (even though his long lost bone was on the other side of the yard). rofl

@mace727 asi if you as human were so clean, you leave pieces of dead skin, drool, and suede everytime you go to sleep (and god knows what else you leave in there) most of dogs who live inside a house have to be clean most of the time and they can only left hair, dont be so ignorant, if your dogs stink then have them take a bath frecuently.

they can be hard to train so loads of time needs to go into them for house breaking etc (i'd recommend crating yours) and mines ok now with 2 runs off the lead a day but thats only because he's 16, when he was younger he needed walking for hours and he could still be detructive if we left him alone, not for a first time dog owner but definately worth it!

Ye i know my dog does the same.. he constantly pulls on the lead and its hard to control him but for a basenji is is very well trained.. he can sit when asked to, roll over and lie down. he is like a magnet to other dogs because he has never had the company of other dogs at home. I am trying to convince my parents for a play mate for him but it AINT WORKING! lol!

basenjis are fairly easy to teach rollover sit laydown etc but is fairly hard to teach anything else. i managed to teach my cosmo how to shake my hand. i simply make a cup facing upward, then gently shake my hand up and down as i say shake my hand in swedish "vakki tas!" wait i think it mean shake ur paw... i was never good at my native tongue

I taught my dog how to give me high fives and even though she is blind, she knows the difference between her left paw and right paw when I am specific!
