My mom and dad tell me stories about Coney Island from when they were younger. Did you know that there is a wooden roller-coaster at a theme park in Lake George, NY from Coney Island?
I went there in the summer and it's so different now. Its all run down with only a few original rides. I rode that wooden roller coaster called the cyclone and it's 80 years old! I'll always be grateful I got to go to Steeplechase Park as a kid with its its impressive glass building (reminiscent of the Crystal Palace) , grinning logo face (forerunner of Alfred E. Newman) and ride the cast iron horses on rails! Rides that would never be approved today. Air jets in the floors blasted girl's skirts up and the sounds of brass bands and aromas of carmel corn filled the air.
AMAZING VIDEO! We have to stay vigilant and voice out opinions on what we want the new Coney Island to be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Speak up! If you havn't been in a while GO! September 7th is Astrolands last day!!!! Go before it is all gone!!! You will fall in love with this funtimes mecca! Don't forget the Freakshow Sideshow & museum!!!
Cyclone, Tornado, and Thunderbolt were the best rides in the world back in the day. Cyclone is still standing, but Thunderbolt and Tornado both met tragic endings. Coney Island was pardise back in the day, but now it seems like it was a dream that faded with the night. If it was up to me, I would rebuild Coney Island it's former glory.
Cyclone, Tornado, and Thunderbolt. They were the best rides back in the day, and I wish Coney Island could turn back to the way it used to be. It used to be paradise, but now it just seems like it was all just a dream that faded with the night.
I was at Coney almost every weekend last summer; it wasn't what it was but still has a very special and unique charm. You can feel the history everywhere, the beach and rides are still there as is a 10 minute walk down the boardwalk to Brighton Beach and a Russian/Euro flavor while enjoying the outdoor cafes overlooking the ocean. Coney's still a very special place, which is exactly why they're going to renovate it while ensuring that the original flavor that's still very much there isn't lost.

oh how i wish it was still the same, i live in brooklyn and the coney island now is a run down crappy amusement park with maybe 3 bearable rides. i know they are going to renovate but, itll just become a commercial place that will attract loads of smelly tourists. ill miss coney.
I wish that the world was still this clean and "normal". The world today is dirty and depressed...I wish that we were still like the people in this video.
Coney was once known to be the "world's playground" now they're going to make some changes to Coney Island and this is what I believe the last year that Astroland will be open.
That was called "wearing your Sunday Best" and people dressed like that to show they had the clothes to do it. It would have been much more comfortable to have worn shorts and a T-shirt, but people were modest back then, too. I never saw my father ever wear shorts. My mother always wore dresses.
Coney Island was PACKED back then! Nowadays, with the invention of the internet and video games, nobody leaves their house anymore. You'd be lucky if you see 1% as many people on Coney Island as you do in this video even though the world population is three times greater than it was in the 1940's, but I like it that way.
I think Americans were made of stouter stuff in the 40s. Look at the ladies on the Cyclone! They're not petrified, they're having a great time! The HOOPLA looked like no big deal! Today, we have to have seatbelts, constraints...BAH! We're becoming a bunch of weeners.
Anyone ever ride on that "hoop-la" thing at 6:38? Is that the right name for it? It's amazing! Looks like you weren't even strapped in. I'm guessing that was one of the first things to go: To most of us, Coney Island was a great amusement park, but to lawyers, it must've looked like the world's biggest candy store!
People were a bit more civil then... they assumed risks and didn;t look to blame everyone else for their misfortune. We've become a sue happy society unfortunately
DARN SAFETY REGULATIONS!!!!! I'd give anything to go to Coney Island during the '40s or before. Ferris wheels...with moving, swinging carts...the great spinny disk...and whatever the heck all the rest were, they seem much better than what we have today!

The fat lady in the freak show is pretty ironic as you can't walk down the street today and NOT see one.

I wish that the world was still this clean and "normal". The world today is dirty and depressed...I wish that we were still like the people in this video.

Coney was once known to be the "world's playground" now they're going to make some changes to Coney Island and this is what I believe the last year that Astroland will be open.

The differences b/w now & then:
1.) the parachute tower isn't working (as of the 1960s)
2.) it's mostly desereted
3.) most of the rides are or will be (when the big makover happens) defunct

The guy is almost right. If 1940s Coney existed today. Ron Kuby and his crew would have a field day.

quattrone427 3 years ago

TroyOi 3 years ago
People were a bit more civil then... they assumed risks and didn;t look to blame everyone else for their misfortune. We've become a sue happy society unfortunately
