I was going to suggest that you could just grab the your opponent's thumb and and pull it away but I wanted to keep it simple. But your tip on striking the thumb to get out of the grab is a great tip, thank you!
I teach this technique but add a side kick to the attacker's knee before running away. I don't want an angry attacker chasing me, or my students.
