This aria is always sung transposed down one whole step to C major. This came about because the tessitura is almost that of a baritone and this role is usually sung by a deep bass. In the same opera, Rosina's aria, composed in E, is done in F when sung by a soprano.
Lucia's mad scene was written in F. But it is ALWAYS done down one whole tone...Eb.
These traditions are well known in the opera world. Please don't show your ignorance by making stupid comments people.

@BorisGodunov - I agree - it is totally acceptable to transpose, although I don't know if that is done in the context of the opera itself, or just in concert. Was this aria written for more of a baritone, or has it been transposed just a few steps down? Are we sure this is from a concert in 1979? He looks much older than he did in a video (posted here on youtube) of him singing the Verdi requiem with Pavarotti, either in 1967 or 1970 depending on which post you watch.

@sopranosd I actually used to question that until I remember La Calunnia usually isn't sung in the proper semi-tone either. And that is done in Opera as well. Most of the great Basses like Siepi, Lloyd, Furlanetto, and Ghiarov do it and they all rock.

What a spectacular performance of this aria! We think all too frequently of the Grande Ghiarov in serous roles. Therea re so many in which he has really few if any equals (Filippo, Fiesco, Mefistofele, etc) - but Good God as Basilio - he was phenomenal - and he knew it! And he enjoyed it so !! Questione di gusti!Siepi aveva delle note gravi più robuste di Ghiaurov,ma per il resto Ghiaurov aveva una voce molto più potente ,oceanica,come bellezza di voce se la giocano,ma come interprete Siepi era più anonimo,mentre Ghiaurov era un vulcano di personalità!!!!Ascolta i due Don Giovanni e confrontali,poi mi dirai!!!!!!
he sounds even with a lot more meat than today....many baritones and basses.....and he matbe around sixty.....so....may be the old school was a lot better than our today great technique.....and his sounds is not as "tube" as today .....

No, no es un genio por haber sacado la lengua, sino por mantener una fonación excelente pese al paso de los años. Ghiaurov ha fallecido hace algunos años, y fue uno de los bajos más importantes de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Lo de la lengua es nota a pie de página, pero le aseguro que a no cuaquier cantante se le vería bien el hacerlo. Su Mefistófeles es incomparable, y hay varias versiones en Youtube.

Es verdaderamente un maestro.¡Y qué Mefistófeles hizo! Hay una versión discográfica junto a Kraus y a Mirella Freni junto a este gigante, como Mefistófeles, que es una reliquia de todos los tiempos. Falleció el 2004, y el eco de su muerte se dejó escuchar con pesar en todo el mundo de la ópera.

unfortunately he is more of a bass baritone than a true bass. really, his voice has a bit of baritone quality and certainly there are darker bass like voice in the current opera scene.
Ghiaurov was what is known as a basso cantante, which is a high bass, so yes, there are and have been darker voices. What an utterly magnificent sound he had and I miss hom immensely. If you like basso canantes, you might also try Jerome Hines, Sam Ramey, Ezio Pinza and Feodor Chaliapin. You likely know of them already, but they are worth a listen anyway. Mardones was also incredible-a basso profundo with the high notes of a Verdi baritone. And what a sound! Rich, dark, and solid!
Yess!!! Basoo-baritono, according to the repertoire he sang: Iago, Mefistofele, Scarpia, Escamillo, etc. He could sing some Bass-role parts: Boris, Banquo, Gremin, Don Bartolo. But the voice color, my friend, is the real marker for a voice classification, no the repertoire.
Ghiaurov was basso-cantante. Ghiaurov' color voice is for a bass. Never sag Jago, Scarpia or Escamillo on stage. Possibly recorded those arias, but never was basso-baritone

he sounds even with a lot more meat than today....many baritones and basses.....and he matbe around sixty.....so....may be the old school was a lot better than our today great technique.....and his sounds is not as "tube" as today .....

This man is my hero! Im performing colline in La Boheme for opera in the ozarks, and his performance with pavarotti and mirella freni is the best ive heard!

si tienes razon, he escuchado esta aria muchas veces y muchos bajos cantan alguna partes como tenor, al final uno no sabe que son.

No, no es un genio por haber sacado la lengua, sino por mantener una fonación excelente pese al paso de los años. Ghiaurov ha fallecido hace algunos años, y fue uno de los bajos más importantes de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Lo de la lengua es nota a pie de página, pero le aseguro que a no cuaquier cantante se le vería bien el hacerlo. Su Mefistófeles es incomparable, y hay varias versiones en Youtube.

Es verdaderamente un maestro.¡Y qué Mefistófeles hizo! Hay una versión discográfica junto a Kraus y a Mirella Freni junto a este gigante, como Mefistófeles, que es una reliquia de todos los tiempos. Falleció el 2004, y el eco de su muerte se dejó escuchar con pesar en todo el mundo de la ópera.

unfortunately he is more of a bass baritone than a true bass. really, his voice has a bit of baritone quality and certainly there are darker bass like voice in the current opera scene.

Ghiaurov was what is known as a basso cantante, which is a high bass, so yes, there are and have been darker voices. What an utterly magnificent sound he had and I miss hom immensely. If you like basso canantes, you might also try Jerome Hines, Sam Ramey, Ezio Pinza and Feodor Chaliapin. You likely know of them already, but they are worth a listen anyway. Mardones was also incredible-a basso profundo with the high notes of a Verdi baritone. And what a sound! Rich, dark, and solid!

Yess!!! Basoo-baritono, according to the repertoire he sang: Iago, Mefistofele, Scarpia, Escamillo, etc. He could sing some Bass-role parts: Boris, Banquo, Gremin, Don Bartolo. But the voice color, my friend, is the real marker for a voice classification, no the repertoire.

Ghiaurov was basso-cantante. Ghiaurov' color voice is for a bass. Never sag Jago, Scarpia or Escamillo on stage. Possibly recorded those arias, but never was basso-baritone
