Don Francks (woody) was said had died in a auto crash after this film. Totally untrue! His last credit was the The Curse of the Piano in 2008. I´m amazed he did not turn out to be a leading man.
I always supremely creeped out by this guy. I love the song but what guy corners a super naive girl in the woods and tells her the only way not to die is to make out with me? I know it's supposed to be romantic... but I guess it's the way she absolutely not into him yet he decides its ok to just up and kiss her...
@cboncklis I agree. This is romantic, and fairly innocent seduction compared to some. A classic song! "You've got me flying high and wide, on a magic carpet ride...full of butterflies inside" I'd say she's into him.
I had this song stuck in my head all day. Couldn't figure out what it was from, I thought it was a great song though. so i searched it up and I remembered what it was. now to figure out where i heard it.
Hate Don Francks' performance (but I blame Coppola for not directing it the way it should be sung. On the other hand, I'm MADLY IN LOVE with Petula Clark's work on this number.
Love this video Don And Petula look so good together or where they? I have this same video on my iphone Riped from the DVD Cracking film in my top 10 along with Somewhere in time Cool Thanks
In case nobody mentioned this already, this scene was film on the Warner Brothers soundstage where "Camelot" had been shot a year earlier. It's a stark contrast to the exterior scenes Francis Coppola shot up in northern California.
Don Francks - Canadian Actor - was in the TV show of femme nikita ... his daughter was on Different World as Freddy and his son is now on Stargate Atlantis
Love the musical Finian's Rainbow. but this 1 song, wow. Has been recorded & sung by so many famous artists like Sinatra. Probably the best known song from the play & movie.
Thanks mickeyjoe for posting this clip.
As for Pet Clark, "I know a place were we can go", it's "downtown". but "Don't sleep in the subway darling"
Amazing talent, was a star on British radio when she was but a wee thing & she was one of the Lady singers in the 60's who defined that generation of music.
These two wonderful performers created one of the sweetest, sexiest scenes in movie history with this. Their voices intertwicne so beautifully. Petula, Don, and Fred Astaire were wonderful in this movie although the rest of the film pales a little in comparison. Great soundtrack. Thanks for posting this gem. I'll rewatch it often when I want to see romance in action. Petula Clark is totally gorgeous!
don"t miss this film, she is so wonderful ,fresh ,sweet , what else can i say. and all the songs are beautiful. todo el exito que tienes te lo mereces petula,la gente con tu talento debe ser admirada por todo el mundo. love you very much
Our HS drama class did this one, and I played Susan (the dancer) Becuase we weren't familiar the show, I had to rent the video. All I can say is----wow. The entire movie is phenomal, even for 1968. Don and Petula [what a name, lol] are wonderul together and their voices, the whole scene. That surprise *kiss just makes you melt---lol
Damn! Petula is so beautiful. What a beautiful profile she has! In this segment you see her beautiful chin, jaw cheeks. I was a fan of hers ever since "Downtown." But I really loved her in this film. I wanted to be like her, and imitated her singing. Too bad this film wasn't more appreciated, but in those days, critics thought insulting musicals made them seem "smart" & "savvy" --BS! This scene is one of the hottest ever in musical film history.
If you're a fan of this movie, then I highly recommend watching the "DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY" on the DVD. Francis Ford Coppola is very upfront about all his favorite things AND shortcomings of the production, what he would have done differently, and etc. Good stuff.
I think Don Fracks has one of the sexiest voices I've ever heard in my life... sigh! Don't know why he didn't became a big star. I've herard some pretty good jazz sung by him... he was really good!!!
You are right. My grandfather was Lee Sabinson, the producer from the origional B-way production 1947 to be exact. It was by his and my mother's standards, along with most critics at the time, a movie which did not live up to the standards of the critically acclaimed theatrical production of that it was based on. The music however is beautiful with the voice of the ever dearing Petula Clark. So yes, you consences is correct.
It was a good movie. I personally think that the reason it didn't do so well at the time was that it was based on a rather old play (from the 1940s if I'm not mistaken) and the source material was changed quite a bit for the adaptation.
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who later did "The Godfather."
The actor here is Don Francks, later the sheriff in "My Bloody Valentine", around 1980 or '81 I think.
I saw this movie for the first time in my life just a few days ago. And I hopelessly fell in love with it. Exspecially with this song: it's so romantic it lifts my heart and soul to the stars!
Believe it or not, musicals were very out of favor with the baby boomers. Even though DOLLY, CAMELOT, and OLIVER were yet to come, they were not a hit with that demographic. The combo of Clark and Francks, did not have enough star power to pull in an audience that transcended generations. I went to see a revival of FUNNY FACE, and when it ended, my roommate and I were the only two left in the theatre.
I think you hit the nail on the head. In 1968 especially, escapist gems like this one didn't have much appeal for an audience that found it increasingly difficult to ignore harsh realities (riots, assassinations, war, etc.). If Oliver and Funny Girl were more successful during the same year, it might be because they had enough tragedy to make them believeable to viewers who could no longer buy into 100% happy endings.
It was many years ago when I saw this wonderful movie with my date..Youth and physical strength has gone.....but to hear this beautiful music again has brought youth back into my heart....thank you
Petula Clark will surely always be remembered for her exceptional, brilliant voice and class as illustaed by this clip, but perhaps she will be less remembered for her acting, what a great pity, for me a very underrated yet superb actress.
From a film that seemed dated at the time, let alone now. But the music is something sort of grandish, so it is. I saw Petula and Don Frankks sing this on stage during her concert in Toronto in 2005, and almost 40 years later they still sounded great together.
Passe? You're no doubt correct. We all know JFK would lay on the floor to relax his back and listen to Camelot. Apparantly the same was done with this musical, although of course he was murdered before the movie.
I dig Petula in no small way too.
And fuck political correctness and the goat it rode in on!!
