  • @5:00 I started to judge this for being to sloppy. Talking to myself about how it's messy and fast..jump to a few seconds later, @5:30, as I'm being judgmental, tears start welling up. He's playing the melody line inside the arpeggios! Gets me every time.

  • Heifetz just looks like he was born holding a violin. Of course his sound is gorgeous, but he also just looks so good playing. (That said, and no disrespect to the great Heifetz, but Millstein's Chaconne is my personal favorite). Thanks for posting this great clip.

  • He is jascha Heifetz, if he wants to play it fast, the let him play it fast

  • is it just me of does heifetz play EVERYTHING a bit too fast....

  • 24 dislikes? Seriously people? Perhaps you think you can do it better. Its a musical masterpiece and Heifetz deserves a like just for playing it.

  • very beautiful but i like perlman's more :3

  • too fastfastfastfastfastfastfast

  • Beethoven said music is greater than the whole of wisdom and philosophy......

  • TOO FAST

  • @danielmondana fast tempo intensify the feeling

  • It is apalling to think that if Hitler and his gangsters had had their way, Heifetz, Perlman, Menuhin, Elman, Kreisler, Stern and so many others would have been consigned to gas chambers. God, I hate anti-semites! In saying this, I do not discount the value of every Jewish life that those bastards snuffed out; it is just that I wonder how much more of the potential Jewish contribution to civilisation we have lost.

    Tony O'Brien

  • @tonyobrien39 I don't know how this is relevant to the music.

  • @tonyobrien39 it's not the fact they were jewish that they were fantastic people, it's just the fact that they had great minds. Why aren't you reeling over every genocide that has ever happened in history?

  • I saw the original TV broadcast of this performance in 1971 when Heifetz was age 70. His 1952 recording with RCA is actually not that much different than this.

  • omg, he is too good, but there is a question I want to ask, why his right hand looks so weried?

  • looks pretty normal to me, why do you think it looks weird?

  • 左手が完璧!!

  • Heifetz is not only a technical genius, but he KNOWS how the music SHOULD and MUST sound, and he plays it accordingly. That's something you can't teach, that's something that must be acquired with age.

  • MAYBE OLD BUT STILL A VERY STINKIN GOOD AWESOME VIOLINIST HE STILL IS

  • Christ, this man just doing it all so smooth and nice making every other person who's ever played this song look like a complete novice. Doesn't even seem like he's even being challenged.

    ~

  • actually, even better, the dislike button should be linked to an electric charge! ;)

  • the 'dislike button' should be DISABLED!

  • Where is the rest of this recording? ...

  • No one plays violin like Heifetz... amazing!!!!!!

  • wish he was my grandfather

  • This is as close to perfection as it comes on violin :-)

  • Stunning!

  • No equal in the history of music on the violin. I am sure Paganini would have been impressed with Heifetz and maybe a little jealous :)

  • Dear friends!

This clip is from the DVD disc featuring several Heifetz perfomances and his biography. Closer to the end of this film there was a scene of Heifetz playing some musical piece with two japanese girls. I very much liked that piece but have no idea what it was since it wasn't mentioned on the cover. Could anyone tell me what was the name of that piece? Thank you!

  • I LOVE YOU HEIFETZ

  • 21 dislikes? Are people insane?

  • @MiloArc Yes. Unfortunately, many people are insane, tone deaf, or just brain dead.

  • Oh my God! This is beautiful!

  • Bach is the man from Atlantis.

  • even Heifetz can scratch, proof at 0.43 !

  • I dont know why, but i think he was a rude person.... his face, never smiling...

  • @raul20095 @raul20095 I suppose you did not read his biography... /watch?v=DOGNwxSb6Zs he was smiling at 2:09 :)

  • The old man is not scared by dragons!

  • SOO FANTASTIC <3

  • One of the most amazing pieces played by one of the most amazing violinists.

  • Go on, Musikant!

  • I so agree with kriemhild85... It isn't everyone who discovers all the details in Heifetz geniality only by listening or watching. You have to play the instrument to really know the difficulties in playing the violin, and to able of understanding the massive talent Heifetz had.

  • you are listening to the greatest violinist the world has ever produced.

  • TAKE 1!!!

  • If you look close enough you can see an angel controlling Heifetz.....Now it all makes sense.

  • Classic music. This is the best mankind has to offer along with science.

  • I wish I would have chosen a profession which I would have been equally passionate and driven. I hope I can guide my child to make her own decisions to follow her heart, rather than putting up barriers in her path.

  • Definetely Strong... way too much passion to handle...

  • Heifetz is an absurd transcripion (especially when pronounced like "high") of the Hebrew word "chefetz" ("ch" as in Bach, both "e's" as in "bed"), meaning "will, wish, desire" (remember Menuhin's sister, her name was also "Cheftziba" - "my wishes (are expressed) in her"

  • こんな完璧な音楽、初めて聴いた。

  • And it was take 1... Amazing!!!

  • Epic performance.

  • Que Excelente *-*

  • wonderful

  • uery well done

  • @unnoticedpasserby @powerofsoul911 I agree, although there is plenty of bach that is digestible as a first listen. amazing recording by the way, I also recommend Nathan Milstein.

  • This is just a peace of Paradise!

  • @unnoticedpasserby

i mean i like more simple songs, with straight message, not too many accords, no clear melody. THis music nature simply dont make me happy, rather sad. Ie, i like: Bedrich Smetana - Vltava

  • @powerofsoul911 This is the Chaconne, the last movement of Bach's partita 2, that he wrote in the memory of his wife - and it is extremely sad and dark. Listen to Heifetz play Sarasate's "Carmen Fantasy" and "Zigeunerweisen", both are happy and joyful pieces :-))

  • I dont know why i dont recognize any story, or melody in these classical songs. Maybe im too simple, not sure.

  • I wish he's alive and I could listen his playing live

  • you have to be a violinist to know exactly how awesome this is.

  • @kriemhild85 Agree~!

  • Comment removed

  • @kriemhild85 I think I know how awesome this is. Being a MUSICIAN (not necessarily a violinist) is enough for me.

  • @kriemhild85 musician ;)

  • @kriemhild85 no, tenor drum player, and i admire this so much :)

  • @kriemhild85 You don't have to be violinist to appreciate impeccable pieces like this one... The best thing huge players like Heifetz can give us is not the technicality but rather the soul of the piece

  • Comment removed

  • @kriemhild85 Or just to have ears

  • @kriemhild85 An impossibly difficult piece. Maybe when Bach wrote it, no one could play it,and he could only hear it in his own head. Very possible.

  • @kriemhild85 yes. I know its so pretty... so many thing run through my head when I listen to this peace :) Magical

  • @kriemhild85 I dont think you do, im not a violinist and can definitely tell just how incredible this is!!

  • it gets better every time i listen to it.

  • this video brings me to tears

  • The best performance amoung the best!!

  • The best performance amoung the best

  • It looks as he was joking.

  • not one syllable, not 2, but 3. DAYYUYYUM

  • 17 people dont know what music is.

  • @Grobanite122549

  • He was achieving a inhuman level of mastery, thats why he died, went to play for God.

  • Heifetz is the master of this piece...it's an amazingly complex piece and a young violinist, no matter the talent, needs a bit of life before being able to perform this amazing piece in the manner and quality it deserves.

  • Funny to note from the comments that classical fans get as grumpy and petty as Stevie Ray Vaughan,GaGa or Bieber fans...Lol.Great video

  • perlman better him !

  • A lovely composition, wonderfully performed; thank you for sharing it with us.

  • THE BEST

  • i didnt understand this piece but when Jascha played it it all became clear (really it did)

  • こんなじじい反則だろ。くそほどかっこいい。

  • Name one violinist with that flexibility of phrasing. That suavity, that nuance, that wide ranging palette of violinistic color. I can't name any that come close.

  • 何の気負いもなくこんな大曲をやってのけてしまうんだ。

    たまげた…。

  • el mejor sin duda

  • i prefer Maxim Vengrov's verion of this chacoone

but then agaian Heifetz is the violin master

  • That's gonna be tough to recreate on my guitar :P

  • idk i just think that he plays this peace too fast. i think it should be slower with more emotion.

  • @nextoneup123 he does play it too fast and I agree. If you listen to Hilary Hann's version it's better =)

  • @612curtis hahn's version is a nice and fancy studio recording in LA.

  • Exelente me llena el alma escuchar buena musica.

  • unbelievable!~ I wish violinists today would play like him...... not perfect.... but with intention to the moment. I am always blown away by Heifetz.

  • he is simply... perfect?

  • dogododogogodgodgodgoddgodgodgodgodgoddgodgodgod dogs just dogs

  • great violinist bravoooooo

  • Even at 70, he still retained all his magic! That makes it all the more amazing.

  • He always uses the same violin, does anyone know what it is? Strad, Guenari

  • @klpj123 Giuseppe Guarneri "del Gesu" in 1742, although he did have a strad, he favored the gesu in his performances

  • @Sergio0s i've played on a 1742 guarneri and 1709/1714 strads, and i have to say that i prefer the guarneri over the strad

  • @PJViolin I'm incredibly jealous of you. Wish i could have the chance to play on such fine instruments. Just curious, why do you prefer the guarneri? I've always thought they might be better to play on, considering i like the sound more. Is it just the sound you prefer or the violin itself?

  • @Sergio0s I like the guarneri's darker tone. It also felt like it fit my hand a lot better. But in all truth, I thought it was hell of a lot easier to play in tune on a guarneri than a strad. If i barley moved my finger on the strad it felt like i played half a step off the original note. Just to mention, I play on a copy of a guarneri, so there may be some bias in my preference. Regardless, they are both amazing instrument makers.

  • @Sergio0s I also played the guarneri and strad with a number of amazing bows, and i still prefered the guarneri

  • @klpj123 Giuseppe Guarneri "del Gesu" in 1742, although he did have a strad, he favored the gesu in his performances

  • It underlines the imperfection in this world that so few people have watched this video in comparison to the mouth wash ad. on this site....christ was crucified..no one bought Van Gogh's paintings and few appreciate Heifetz. A gem of beauty.

  • This is one of my favorite videos of Heifetz because he is alone in the studio, not in a tux, playing one of the most intensely personal and moving pieces ever written for violin. My favorite interpretation of the Chaconne. Thank you!

  • I think people misconstrue harshness with a masculine approach. Harsh seems to have such a negative connotation

  • i don't think we'll ever be able to pass Heifetz's standard. so awesome

  • These Men(Perlman, Heifetz, Oistrak, and all the greatest non-named (who are not necesseraly world-known) violin players), have unified their souls in their own, on each one personlly measured scale, with the spirit of Bach and God. Bach is as perfect as the good news of Jesus!!!! And the real good news from Jesus are not only for "christians"...!!!!!

  • Bach is all about emotion, man... I mean, he "wrote for God!"

  • @Coolcat607 I can hear Nigel Kennedy saying this! ... you are so right too !

  • someone tell me how heifitz has only 136k views and hahn has over 700k, and this is a live recording whereas her's sounds like the cd version coupled w/ images of her? =(

  • @mina7versace lol what you expect people now go by looks and people dont really appreciate the legends

  • @mina7versace

The recorded Chaconne of Heifetz also have more views xD

  • @mina7versace Can YOU then tell me how Heifetz gets only <200k views while Justin Bieber and his "music" get hunders of millions of views? You explain it to me, my friend...

  • @xaviervandepoll For the same reason that McDonald's serves BILLIONS yet no one in their right mind would call McDonald's a "cuisine."

  • @mina7versace Sorry but the quality is so awful that i'd prefer to listen to a dog barking... Maybe that's why she got more view. ;)

  • @mina7versace don't forget that he's pretty old here too

  • @mina7versace She is a beautiful young woman with a great talent, He is the master that she will somday be, and then they will look and her protege in his or her youth ....Youth and a beautifull face and she does have great tallent ,, He has probably played this one piece more times than she has held a violin.hence his mastery, she willl be as great as him someday, perhaps better as she is gettimg close

  • @mina7versace Answer: She's a babe.

    But you knew this.

  • @mina7versace because her face if prettier than Heifetz' :)

  • @mina7versace , i like hahn's chaconne playing better than Heifetz because she plays it spiritually whereas Hefeitz conforms to form more and his tone isn't divine like hers.

  • "take one"?!...

What is that supose to mean?! Was there a take two to THIS?!

  • For those of you who are Heifetz fans, see the full-length movie/video "They Shall Have Music" on AOL/Truveo (free). Good sound quality, close close close ups of his right hand and bow.......Also, it's about two very young NY thugs and the Maestro's Strad. Not to be missed...:)

  • Thanks,twang!...................

  • ugh, poor audio

  • Mix Master Bach. His mad beat boxing organ skills will bring down the house. lol, whatever, this this awesome. if there's any clarinet family players out there Michael Davenport transcribed this for the Bass Clarinet, but it can be played on any clarinet. Not as grand as this (considering the clarinet can't achieve the same effects, only imitate), but still challenge for any skilled clarinetist.

  • there are 11 really stupid people out there..heifetz is amazing!

  • there are 11 really stupid people out there somewhere. heifitz is amazing!

  • Schumann, of this song: "On one stave, for a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings. If I imagined that I could have created, even conceived the piece, I am quite certain that the excess of excitement and earth-shattering experience would have driven me out of my mind."

  • @cgperetti It was actually Brahms who wrote that, in a letter to Schumann. But oh so true.

  • @cgperetti This is such a perfect way to capture the power of Bach's music, but I believe it was Brahms who said this.

  • @ixd735 yes it was. he even transcribed a version for the left hand on the piano. Its a finger-twister!

  • @cgperetti I LOVE THAT! one of the most profound statements i have ever heard. I know this is nit-picky but i believe it was actually Brahms who said that after hearing his friend Joseph Joachim, one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, play it. no disrespect intended. I am glad you posted that. TY!

  • @cgperetti my freind. brahms sent a letter to clara schumann with these words. it wasnt schumann it was brahms.

  • love the quote but didn't Brahms say that?

  • @cgperetti Whoops: "Brahms, in a letter to Clara Schumann, of this song:"

  • @cgperetti thought that was Brahms ... anyway probably made up.

  • @cgperetti brahms said this

  • @cgperetti I believe it was Brahms that said that to Schumann in a letter.

  • @cgperetti *Brahms.

  • I dont like "XX people missed the like button" comments. There is no need to recognize idiots who cannot appreciate perfection.

  • @darkmice1 but I cannot understand why someone would hit the "I dislike this" button on this video. It's blasphemy; seriously.

  • @monochromatic87 They think it says dis i like

  • @kiop9000 Brilliant! Love it!

  • i think 10 people missed the like button

  • I love his technique.. seriously.. for me he was the greatest of us all... just this particular piece i like a bit slower... but thats me...

  • ah... he's such a genius. It brings tears to my eyes when I hear how passionate his interpretation is... too much :) such a treat to listen to Heifetz playing the Chaccone

  • Perfection at its most ... perfect

  • It's a shame no one puts the dates on these videos

  • The greatest solo work of all time played by the greatest soloist of the twentieth century.

Brahms remarked about the Ciaccona ' On one stave, for a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings. If I imagined that I could have created, even conceived the piece, I am quite certain that the excess of excitement and earth-shattering experience would have driven me out of my mind.

Heifetz at over 70 as good as ever and better than anyone alive.

  • Best version I have seen. So goooood :) Havent played violin since I was 5 lol... I am 16 now and am going to take it up again :D Hope I can get this good

  • "TAKE ONE".............flawless victory. Best first take ever.

  • I was just watching an interview with Bruce WIllis and got the strange feeling that if he was as bad-ass a violin-player as he was a character-actor, he'd be kinda like Heifetz. :P Or maybe Heifetz is just plain bad-ass. :P Just a weird thought I had.

  • @fryfry377 Funny XD

  • To all those people who are criticisizing Heifetz's technique, just remember that this is not his prime playing. Anyway, there are very few who can match or surpass even this level of playing (which is not Heifetz's prime).

  • Outstanding Technique!!!

  • Jascha Heifetz was a virtuous, cant believe that theres people who critics jascha for his tecnique c'mooon, most of that people who does it never will play like he did, NEVER, NEVER in their lifes and that must be frustrating thats why understand a little bit their stoopid coments, Viva jascha Heifetz.

  • I remember the PBS special back in the early 1970s, from which RCA pressed the album "Heifetz On Television".

  • I grew up on this version and am very close to it. And I like his earlier recording especially well. This is from the Heifetz on TV which aired around 1970.

  • There may be one ot two slips, almost, but no one needs better than that to get the high quality performance such as this.

The spirit takes over the performance and that's what makes it unimitable. And as an example I'll to one of the simplest parts, starting around 6:41 Just like he is not afraid to go loud, he is not afraid to go quiet, and by that I mean much more than the quiet volume. I mean it is with spirit.

  • Honestly, he had a very unique style. But, so did Bach. This interpretation is one of the best and is actually studied by those learning to emote through an instrument while respecting the balance of profound thought and intense emotion the composer wanted to get across. The first time I heard this piece, it stirred me to tears.

  • This record is not so good.It just a playing notes. In terms of technique and emotion. This is a historically important movie but that's it.
