  • This and Y's book 1 and 2 were the two first games I had for the TGCD, nice review dude!

  • @FabCapadouca Very cool! Thanks for watching and commenting!!

  • A review that do the game justice. But my personal gripe : as a game in general it is pretty solid, although as you said it is too long for nothing. BUT... as a "Wonder Boy" game, nah... I don't like it, at all. Kudos to NEC to NOT include the Wonder Boy name on this, although SEGA & Westone deserve a smack on the noggin'. I mean Mixing the 1st WB game with shooter elements? AFTER something as stellar as WonderBoy in Monsterland? I think not!!!

  • Dude I like your style of reviews keep up the good work bro.

  • @MrEvilpanda69 Well thanks my friend! I truly appreciate it!

  • Oh thank you for reviewing Turbo Grafix 16 games!! Thankyou!!

  • @teddyrubskin Hey, you got it. Thanks for watching!

  • I looked at the Wii Virtual Console today and they only have the MegaDrive version available. Did they take the TurboGrafx version off or is the heading to this a goof??

  • @kenbefound It definitely used to be there. If you go on the Wikipedia page you can see that it was added to Wii Virtual Console on December 17, 2007. Perhaps they removed it yes. Sigh.

  • @spida1a Thanks for responding. I've since purchased a modded Duo-R so won't be restricted to the Virtual console, haha!

  • @kenbefound I just checked, the TurboGrafx version is still there.

  • @NeotailsX Thanks, you are indeed correct, I must be losing my mind, haha

  • This guy sounds like Oolong from Dragon Ball.

  • @EmeraldWarrior420 HA! I never heard that one before. Oh man, I wish. That would be awesome. Lol :)

    Thanks for watching.

  • love these fucking reviews!!!

  • @RyutarocKxxx Well f$(*$in 'a! :)

Thanks a lot! I appreciate it!!

  • @RyutarocKxxx preach it brutha!

  • i remember this game but much like you stated it is way too long!

  • @bongo870 I like it. You know? It's fun...but it doesn't have that "variety" to keep your interest that entire time (like Mario Bros. or something does, you know)? Ha ha.

    Thanks!

  • I don't think I've played this, but these videos make it look pretty darn good! For an auto-scrolling game, my current favourite is Horror Story! It's a bit like this crossed with Splatterhouse and Hell Explorer! Good point about the length of the game, not a problem if you have save points, but on this media, with only 3 continues, it just must be too time consuming to get to the end!

  • better play the arcade version.

monster world Sega ages for ps2

    look it up

  • this game bring back the old days.

I played it on sega genesis.

Why did they change the name to wonder boy?

  • I have this game, but to be honest, I'm not sure if I beat it or not. I agree with you spida1a, on your whole review of this game. I'm glad that I have this game, but it doesn't blow me away. Great review as usual Chris ! Also, Chris, I'm really enjoying the volume 1 set ! I'm so glad that I found your site, and I'm very grateful that you took the time and great effort to make this awesome 3 disc set ! Take care man !

  • Thanks my friend. I'm extremely glad you enjoyed both the review AND the DVD set. :)

  • Holy shit the Megadrive version sucks! This 1 has 14 levels, better gaphics and awesome music. One more reason I shall get a Turbo Duo for my 16th birthday.

  • Hey, cool. Thanks for watching!

  • I need more videos spida1a! I'm addicted to your reviews. Your right up there with the Nerd. I lost my job because I watch your reviews...well that and wearing neon pink spandex pants. Damn Cheese Cake Factory!

  • Ha ha. Damn you CCF!! :)

Thanks for watching my friend. I'm so glad you enjoy them. It means a lot!

  • I've got this game after I saw your review...but now I'm fucked up! I used to beat this game on Genesis soooo easily...but now I can't do that anymore (14 stages, new - and harder - bosses)...any tip?????

  • ha ha.

I really have no tips except for just playing the hell out it so you get farther every time. You know? It's still a really tough one. :)

    Thanks for watching!

  • Definitely a game to use the Wii NES Retroport since the Wii Remote has no Turbo switches like the TurboGrafx 16 does, and the NES Advantage turbo work better since it has adjustable turbo speeds (the only controller I know that has this feature)and an Arcade Stick. Also the GameCube 4-player controller ports means no Turbo Tap is required (why NEC didn't have second controller port on the PCE/ TurboGrafx I'll never know) and that's one less worry about when playing this long game.

  • This game is an awesome conversion compared with the Sega Megadrive version.

Thanks for the video and explanation !

  • Hey, cool....thanks for watching. You're right, it is a good conversion compared to that one, definitely.

    :)

  • too long?????? too short maybe !!!

when it came out this kinda game costed an eye and a leg, so the longer the better!!!

  • Ha ha. That is true. It was expensive, just like they all are still even today. But, it's 'too long' because it overstays its welcome way too early. I hated that part of it, and still do. Not enough variety to hold your attention for that long.

  • ok it s too long coz as a game it s mediocre ( as mediocre was the original arcade game) - wonderboy 1 and two were MUCH better

  • Yes, definitely! Hee hee.

Hey, thanks for watching my vid! Have a good one!

  • dude, ur voice reminds me of bosley from charlie's angels

  • Lol! I have never been told that before.

Ugh, I hate my voice. Hee hee!

  • there was a really good pcengine wonderboy game, an arcade port of i think monster land, i dont know if this came out in the west.

  • very nice review.

the game isn't a must-buy but it looks decent enough, Wonder Boy is always fun.

  • Great Review! The game looks very fun to me. It kind of reminded me of Adventure Island for a sec with all that fruit you have to collect. I've got to ask you, if the game were a little shorter, say 8 or 9 stages, would you have given it a higher score? I don't see the 14 stage length as a totally bad thing? You get more bang for your buck! ;)

  • It's still an "above average" game that I recommend. You know? I still like it.

But.....yes, if it was a tad shorter....it would be better. Yes, most games like, say, Super Mario World are awesome with a zillion stages. Monster Lair doesn't have enough variety to stretch it out that long. You know?

Just my opinion of course. I still recommend it. :)

  • Naw, I think I might pass on this game. thanks for the heads up.

  • It's still a fun game. But, what you see is what you get mostly.....

  • awesome conversion !

  • It's a good conversion, yeah.

  • I was so disappointed when I got this game back in the day, because I was expecting it to be a platformer/RPG like the other Wonder Boy games.

  • These reviews neeed more views! its a crime!

  • So true!

  • Sigh. So true. Maybe we all need to trade plugs? :)

  • too long? how many levels were there in mario world?

  • A ton more than that. But, Mario World was a MUCH better game that never overstayed its welcome. Monster Lair becomes rather boring by the time you get even half-way.

  • ah well fair enough. I'm pretty sure the MD version had fewer levels than this one, haven't played it in years though. This one definitely has higher quality music.

  • With that said......I might just SUCK at it. LOL! ;)

  • It amazes me how Hudson left this Wonder Boy game untouched (besides the CD audio) while the other WB games for this system all got different graphics and in the case of Dynastic Hero, different music as well.

  • And another great review! :D

I own this game and I love the look of it. Nothing out of this world graphically, but combined with the music it just gives me the warm fuzzies. hehe

But yeah, 14 levels is a little much. :)

    Thank you for these!

  • Whatsup Broski long time no talk, man i never had anyone else to play with either...my brother didnt start playin video games till well after i didnt have my turbografx :-\

  • Keep em' coming!

  • Another great review!

Kiiiinda wish you got a friend to help you try the 2p mode.. but ah well :)

  • Hmm. Friend? You have one of those I can borrow? :)

  • Lol. Sorry, I'm all out. :|

If you live in MA, we're good, but I have the feeling a Pinball arcade isn't wise to own in your own house if your house is in the Northeast. D:

  • really good review... the game looks good, and its on VC?! Wohoo im so buying it tonight! :D

  • Thanks! I think it's worth it..... :)

  • looks kind of fun actually, such a shame that it gets old. Great review! 5/5

  • That's the only problem. It's a fun little game that just overstays its welcome a bit. But, it has enough going on that I bumped it up a 1/2 star...... ;)

  • Yeah, this game drove me crazy how long it is. Cool review!

  • Do you share continues in two player mode? Nice old skool sneaky way of getting double continues if not. :D

  • I actually think you share continues. It's been a while, though. :(

  • Cheers!

BTW, have you ever thought of doing a review on the import adaptor? Be nice to see what it looks like, looks a lot nicer than that flip one, where you insert Japanese cards back to front.

Oh, have you burnt that game I sent you yet?

  • another kickass review! How the hell do you do it?
