How much of the Thumper have you got? How many cars? Good to know another has been saved. Does it run often? I grew up down South and moved to Lancaster a few years ago - Been meaning to see the East Lancs line for a while.
@TheMaPHEW Thanks. That'll be standard fare then. To see a full set of those on one of the London fast services flying through a no stopping station was a great (and noisy) sight.
there is nothing wrong with old machinery, i can bet any money that if ya put an old engine even if its a old 1900`s oil engine next to some new modern engine that was built, "say yesterday", it`s garanteed the old banga will out last the new shit hands down... and thats why we see all the old stuff still running strong today thats all posted right here on utube
Great Britain's preservation of railroad equipment (along with other things such as cathedrals, music, cars, etc) is a testimony to a sensitivity to humankind's accomplishments and should be a standard for the rest of the world to emulate.
You still don't get it... it's not actually USED comercially anymore - we British have the quaint habit of actually keeping some of the lovely old things we don't USE anymore so they're not lost forever... We don't USE comercially Class 40's anymore, but we have a number of them in preservation so people can enjoy them in years to come. They don't need 'replacing' either - they already have been replaced comercially, - the ones we have left, like the Thumper, are there for our enjoyment!
Cos we like the thought of all that lovely clag floating over your way and choking the intakes of all the boring, soulless tin boxes you have over there! THIS IS A VINTAGE PRESERVED LOCO - stuff like this isn't run everyday now! Suppose you think we all drive around in Morris Minors as well? Clag on!
It might be vintage but lets be honest. It's an old, overused heap that has reached the end of it's useful life after countless overhauls I am sure, and needs to be replaced.
The best of British engining. Like series 2 and 3 land rovers. Austin 1800 Land Crabs and the rest. Sounds like an old Fairbanks Morse "Hit and Miss" engine. I am so glad that we gave up steam power for this (NOT). Why does English technology have to have poor performance and smoke? GM USA and in also Australia doesn't. That is using GM EMD division. The Brit Rail Evening Star 2-10-0 made less smoke.
in most of these old locomotive starting vids, why do they let it start to spin up, only to let it nearly die before letting it spin up again. Many times this goes for many cycles? Why is this done? Why not just let it idle to warm up instead of dirtying up the engine with the smoke from struggling so much?
I think the fuel pressure regulator thing is driven by oil pressure, mostly for engine safety reasons (so that engine dies if oil pressure drops), and when the oil is cold, it has big trouble regulating... At least i think so...
No mate, most diesel engines don't use glow plugs. They are only fitted to smaller diesel engines where the compression ratio is slightly lower, and where you want to avoid shows like this. I.E. Cars!!!
Cold-started without ether...quite typical of big diesels like that. They often light up one cylinder at a time and it takes a while to light up all of them.
in your face, environamental services!!! :))

@t28cj not really, it's carbon comming out of it. Not nearly as bad as what is comming out of any gasoline engine.

That fan revving up sounds creepy as fuck! Like somethings trying to escape from the engine!

There comes a time when you purchase a new one, park the old one and let it rust.
Trains need to retire too.

It's true the old stuff is build to least, like with cars and so, you won't see a 2006 build car, last 50 + years.

the govenor uses engine oil from the power unit to opperate it and will hunt like that on start up. even the deltic does it!

That needs a dammed good service, Even an 'old' engine would have started better than that!

Just ignore idiots like that. They have no concept of historical preservation, let alone taste. Makes the rest of us look bad.

Immense amount of unburned fuel exhausting there. (White smoke- totally unburned.)
What does it need? Top/bottom-end work? Injector rebuild? Manifold heating? Higher cetane number fuel?
I'd love to see measurements of emissions. :')
