This number, the music, this frenzied slice of humanity...I love every distilled moment of it. "Life's a ball...if only you know it" --lyrics to share every way, every day. Glad the show sold out, LuckyGuu. This scene struck me like a thunder bolt when I first saw the movie.
@Rollman1 The Civil Rights Act was not passed until 1964 this movie aired in 63. Segregation by local law or more likely by unreasonable social choices were probably at play. Although the movie was not actually filmed in Sweet Apple, if it exists.
This musical was a parody of when Elvis Presley was drafted and how his female fans mourned. In real life, Ann Margaret (Kim) and Elvis had a deep lasting love affair.
It's funny, I believe Ann-Margaret when she says she's gonna go wild, but I have SO MUCH TROUBLE believing he'll do anything even remotely cool with his life.
u can tell the director wanted her. appaz after they finished filming he rented a studio to film more scenes just for ann margret. not that theres anything wrong with that but thats why the rest of the cast wasnt happy with the film saying it was more of a movie to launch her career than anything.
The seven-and-a-half minutes which made Ann-Margret a star- especially in two moments: her 'men' vamp 'at 1:22, and especially at 3:24, when the Kim-Hugo sparring match moves to the dance floor, and Ms. Margret gives new meaning to sprayed-on pants....OMG!!
@pviking12 Fantastic shape if everyone burst out danceing fantastic choreography every day multple times ad ay. It would make work so much more intresting! Kinda makes you wish real life was a musical.
It seems to me that the musical and the movie are both entirely different worlds. Why on earth did they have to do that? I love both the movie and musical, but...why?
Ann Margret dancing in those Capri pants..with her "back" in FRONT of the camera...moving "it"..like HELL..GOSH !!-must be the most erotic dance in cinema history!!- Carlos
Bobby Rydell said in an interview that it took 2 weeks to rehearse this sequence, and another 2 weeks to shoot it. Generations not even born are enjoying their month of labor.
This came out in 1963, as I lived in W. Covina, CA. I was 9 and I remember being dropped-off to wacth/see this....was a lot for a 9yr old....but I think my Dad was having an affair. Funny....go figure, eh?
remember seeing 'Birdie' on tv as a kid - first crush ever had was Ann-Margret. dancing in those tight pink capri pants. wow! was almost more than my poor little 10yr old heart could stand. this song/dance sequence is the one I always remember. thanks for posting my childhood dream!
@FrederiqueJanuary no. he kind of sucks at singing. plus i dont like hugo. i wish he'd be a little bit more handsome. he just doesnt seem to fit with such a hot girl as the redhead
Yeah Ann Margaret's character is the focal of the film but Bobby , I mean Hugo, is every boys hero and he can sing, dance and play the drums.....but seriously they both have a Lot of Living To Do!!!!!!!
My mother always hated Ann Margret but, she really knew how to dance. Best scene in a movie that pokes fun at Elvis and his fans. It was the Spinal Tap of 1963!
Ann always looks great. Too bad they couldn't have gotten ELVIS to play the part that was based on him in the movie. ELVIS and Ann was great in "VIVA LAS VEGAS".
@donn409 Wow, I never even thought about that! You're right, that would've been fantastic, and Elvis' legend would be all the more enhanced by the memory of him having been able to poke fun at himself.
Just read the Wikipedia entry on the film. Apparently Presley was indeed approached, but the idea was vetoed by Colonel Parker, who didn't like the idea of his valuable property doing a self-parody. Too bad.
@TroyOi Parker was a son of a bitch alright. He thought he made ELVIS which was pure unadulterated bullshit. If he made ELVIS how come he didn't make another one and how come the singers he managed before ELVIS never reached ELVIS' record sales and popularity? One of ELVIS' step-brothers asked that question in a interview once.
Very expressive, could there be Art in America/Colonies. Could this be Art? Why not ask the Smithsonian they have all the answers? I think the Redhead has talent.
This number, the music, this frenzied slice of humanity...I love every distilled moment of it. "Life's a ball...if only you know it" --lyrics to share every way, every day. Glad the show sold out, LuckyGuu. This scene struck me like a thunder bolt when I first saw the movie.

Mmm- so it’s a musical all about Rock & Roll- but without any Rock & Roll music in it. Odd Concept…
Dunno, maybe I should write a musical about punk and score it full of Viennese waltzes- would that float anyone’s boat?

This was definitely my favourite number of the musical when I did it for school, so much fun! :3

Bobby Rydell is overlooked in this dance. He was not a dancer,
yet he kept up with Ann and the others with ease. What can be said
about Ann that hasn't been. She sizzled in a star making number.

Jesse Pearson (who played Conrad Birdie in this film) sings in this song that he is alive.
Unfortunately this is no longer the case. He died of cancer in 1979 aged 49. R.I.P. Jesse, he was great as Birdie.
