This is untrue. Processors in just computers will die quite quickly with out a heat sink, even when under low load.

The fan speeds up for a reason, what is that reason? Because it is getting to hot, and needs more air to cool off. The system will even state that it is getting to hot and will shut off, and does.

Sony did very well with their beast, since not only will it save it self, but it is UNHACKABLE. One processor is locked and can not be used at all except by sony themselves.Google it.

it doesnt do this cos it gets hot. it cant? how just by putting it in its side make it unable to suck air in? it must be some sort of gyroscopic sensor inside which detects that its on the wrong side

There is a fan test video somewhere on youtube. What you do is press and hold the eject button and hit the power on the back to start the fan test. It works smoother after it finishes too.

if u have a 40, 80 or 160gb ps3 u can do this wthout overheating it,turn the power off at eh back, hold the eject button and turn it back on, it will spin the fan up like in the video. its a feature that is used for cleaning the dust out of the console

PS3 has one very large fan (about 6" diameter) mounted on the bottom of the machine. This is presumably why there are vents on front and back of the machine.

I wouldn't suggest repeating this experiment many times, as you don't want to burn out the CPU, GPU's!

The fan in my ps3 is rated 12V 2.5 amps, which is presumably why it can get so fast and loud!

My fucking PS3 (60GB) died while playing damn mp3 files, yep... just music nothing else. Sony wouldn't fix it for free since it was a whopping 15 months old... so i just traded it off for a slim PS2. Sony needs to be hit with a class action lawsuit over the crap quality of the $600 piece of shit PS3 and various other versions of crap. Fuck the damn fan bullshit, the PS3 breaks for a lot of cheap reasons.

If you buy a PS3, get a extended warranty from Bestbuy etc... sucks to lose $500 on trade.

my 40gb ps3 just died and ive only had it 2 weeks! the fan went crazy a couple of times and now it wont turn on. And yes it had plenty of ventilation in my tv cabinate...
